Summer vacation plans greatly affect attendance at our summer weekend Masses. Many people are away from Saint Joseph during the summer months. Since our parish s main source of revenue is our Sunday collections, parishioners absence greatly reduces the amount received (as you can see below), and negatively impacts our ability to meet our monthly operating expenses. Are you one of the many people who spend summer weekends at the Jersey Shore...or who travel a lot during the summer? 3 PASTOR S COLUMN WEDDINGS AT OUR PARISH Last Saturday, July 28, we celebrated two weddings at our parish. At 12 noon, Father Roy Regaspi presided at the marriage of Patrick Chu and Michelle Las. This was an exciting and happy day for the couple and for their families and friends. It also was a special day for Father Roy since this was the first time since his ordination as a priest that he celebrated the sacrament of marriage. Later that same day, at 2:30 pm, another wedding took place at our parish. Margaret Mary Murray, daughter of Gerard & Therese of our parish, was married to Kevin Carbonetti. The wedding was celebrated by Father James Joyce, S.J., a family friend. God literally showered down his blessings upon the newly married couple, because at the time they were set to leave the church, the heavens opened and the rains poured down. May God bless these newly married couples with a lifetime of joy and happiness. May they grow in their love for one another and in their love for Christ and his Church. Currently, we have some 14 weddings scheduled between now and the end of September The celebration of these two weddings gave me an idea for this column. I would like to use it to tell you about our marriage preparation process here at the parish. Our preparation program for marriage is based on the requirements and recommendations set by the bishops of our state. As I tell couples, the Church has been in the marriage preparation business for some 2,000 years, so we must have learned something during that time about helping couples prepare not only for the big day, but also for the years of married life that await them. The marriage process begins with the engaged couple contacting the parish office to set up an appointment with one of the priests. This initial appointment should take place as soon as possible after the engagement. At this first meeting, the priest learns something about the couple and completes some initial forms. He then explains the marriage program at our parish and explains the various options available to the couple. Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, August 5, As required by the Archdiocese, all couples must complete a pre-marriage inventory called F.O.C.C.U.S. (Facilitating Open Couple Communication Understanding and Study). Here at our parish, Ms. Kathleen Church, a licensed counselor, guides the engaged couple in completing this inventory which consists of some 200 questions dealing with every aspect of an engaged and married relationship. After their responses are evaluated, Kathleen reviews the results with the couple. These results give the couple a good idea about their present relationship, its strengths and its areas for growth and discussion. Father Roy presides at the wedding of Michelle Las and Patrick Chu. Margaret Mary Murray & Kevin Carbonetti were married last Saturday. After this, the couple has various options. (a) They can complete the rest of the pre-marriage program with Kathy Church. (b) They can be assigned to a parish support couple and complete the rest of the program with them. These support couples are trained to share what they have learned about marriage with those preparing to be married in the church. (c) They can attend the two preparation programs sponsored by the Archdiocese of Newark, namely, God's Plan for a Joy- Filled Marriage and the Pre-Cana Conference Sessions. Once the couple has completed one of the options above, they meet for two or three additional times with the priest to share their experiences with the preparation program, to discuss the sacrament of marriage, to prepare the liturgy, and to complete the necessary forms required by the Church. Ideally, the sessions and meetings described above take place over a 12 month period. In this way couples have time to reflect on the sessions and the meetings can be easily spaced to suit the personal schedules of all involved. The Church encourages couples to invest time in preparing for marriage in order to ensure that their wedding day will lead to a lifetime of happiness. The Catholic Church cares about marriage and it cares about engaged couples. That care leads the Church, and it leads our parish, to give engaged couples the time, care, and attention they deserve. 4 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES ARE FORMING REGISTRATION DUE BEFORE AUGUST 25 If you have not yet registered for Religious Education classes, we ask that you please do so by August 25, so that we can guarantee the day and class you have requested. Classes are formed on a first come basis. If you need a Family Information or Student Information Registration form, visit our website sjcreligoused.blogspot.com where you can download the forms and return them to our office. If your family is currently experiencing financial difficulties, please contact the office at to arrange for payments. First Grade Students In order to receive First Reconciliation and First Eucharist, a student must have attended first grade religion classes. Anyone who attends a non-catholic School and is going into the first grade in September of 2012 must register for Religious Education. New Students New Student Registrations are being accepted. To enroll in the Religious Education Program, your family must be registered members of Saint Joseph Parish and present a copy of the child s baptism certificate. If you are not registered with the parish, please call the parish office at to speak with one of the priests and register. Volunteers Needed to Staff the Religion Classes Volunteers are the heart of the Religious Education Program. Volunteers staff our classrooms and aid in overseeing the school buildings when class is in session. With close to 900 students in our program, you can only imagine the number of volunteers it takes to help make this program work. Without our volunteers we would not be able to offer our young people a quality program guiding them in the formation of our Catholic Faith. Whether you are the parent of a student or a caring parishioner who enjoys working with children, please take a few moments to prayerfully consider giving of your time and talents as a catechist. Remember, as you undertake this task, you are helping to give the Gift of Faith to the young people of our parish. SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ UPCOMING EVENTS AT SUNDAY MASSES Aug Aug. 19 Aug A priest from the Missionary Society of St. Paul will be visiting our parish and giving the homily at all our Masses. The celebration of the sacrament of baptism will take place at the 10:30 am Mass in the upper church. The Saint Joseph Bible Study Group will extend a brief invitation to join them. (See below.) LEARN ABOUT THE BIBLE, GROW IN YOUR FAITH! People often express an interest in learning more about the Bible and to better understand the Word of God. Here at Saint Joseph Parish we have a way to do just that. It is called the Great Adventure Bible Series. Our Cornerstone Retreats take place in the Saint Joseph Lower School building on Elm Street. They begin at 7 pm on Friday evening and end with a family Mass in Mary s Chapel in the lower church at 8 pm on Saturday. Your overnight stay, all meals and snacks included, is provided for the entire 26-hours of the retreat. We stay overnight so that we can shut out the cares and responsibilities of our busy lives and permit ourselves to be fully open to the Spirit. 5 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, August 5, 2012 At the request of Archbishop Myers, a series of articles by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops will be presented in our bulletin for the next few weeks. They will deal with the Church s teaching on marriage, sexuality, and openness to new life. It is hoped that as Catholics, we will gain a better understanding of the Catholic Church s teachings. Women and men want happy, healthy, life-long relationships built on trust, honesty, and intimacy. But most of all, we want our relationships to be built on real love. In today s society, understanding real love can be difficult. As Catholics, we believe Christ shows us the most perfect image of love: his total gift on the Cross. We find the true meaning of our lives when we imitate this total gift of self and draw our strength from it. Women and men profoundly and uniquely imitate this love in marriage. They vow to give themselves to each other, completely. Because of their sexual difference, husband and wife can truly become one flesh. Through the language of their bodies, their sexual union recalls their vows: giving themselves to one another in love that is total, faithful, and life-giving. Their sexual love is meant to be an intimate communion with the other mind, body, and soul the whole person. When a couple deliberately contracepts or sterilizes their sexual union, they change the meaning of their love and their relationship to God. In our hearts, we know we are made for an incredible, an amazing, and a natural love to be shared in communion with our spouse. Contraception impedes and even breaks that communion. IN COMMUNION Article 1 in a series of 3 The impact of a contraceptive mentality is not isolated to individual couples. The widespread use of contraception impacts the entire culture, forming societies to be self-seeking, not welcoming to new life. Forty years ago the Church through Pope Paul VI predicted that if contraception became widely available, there would be a general lowering of moral standards, that men s respect for women would decline, there would be an increase in infidelity and the breakdown of the family, and finally, governments would sanction or mandate contraception in social policy. The most intimate relationship of the couple would be manipulated by public authorities. Looking around the world today, it is difficult to ignore the growing disregard for women and children, the breakdown of marriage and family life, and the increased threat of government coercion. But the good news is that the Father raised his Son, Jesus Christ, who, through the Holy Spirit, is always inviting us to encounter him, and to accept his invitation to be in full communion with him and with each other. That s why he gave us the Church, whose task it is to guide every person toward a true and fully loving relationship with God and with one another. There has been much news lately about the Church s teaching on contraception and sterilization. As Catholics, we may be asking thoughtful questions or struggling to understand this teaching. To learn more, or to see questions others have asked, visit Preparation Program for the Celebration of Infant Baptism at Saint Joseph Parish The celebration of infant baptism is a joyous occasion for that child s family and for the family of the Church. The primary purpose of the Baptism Program presented here at Saint Joseph Parish is not to prepare parents to celebrate the day when the waters of baptism will be poured over their child, but rather to help parents reflect on the meaning of their own baptism and the Catholic Faith they wish to share with their child. The baptism program at Saint Joseph Parish has several components spread over a period of months, beginning before the birth of the child. If you are expecting, we welcome you to begin the preparation for your child s baptism before the birth. The Gospel Reading for today is from St. John Chapter 6 verses Imagine that you visited some people who treated you very well. They gave you delicious food to eat, let you use their swimming pool, and even gave you a gift when you were going home. You certainly would want to visit those people again. Something like that happens in today s Gospel. Last Sunday we heard how Jesus fed a large crowd of people with bread and fish. He gave them more than enough to eat. In today's Gospel reading, we hear how that crowd of people comes to Jesus once more. Jesus was not very happy to see them because he knew that the crowd had only come looking for another free meal. He knew that they did not come to see him and listen to what he had to say to them. He tells the crowd not to pay attention to the food that they had eaten but to believe in him. He tells them to do good and to please God. We do good things when we share our food with people who do not have food, when we share our clothes with children who do not have clothes, when we share our toys with kids who do not have toys. Jesus tells us that God is pleased when we try to do good. Jesus tells us that as long as we believe in him and have faith in him, that God will take care of us. The crowd of people went looking for Jesus. MISSION OF THE WEEK Remember to do things that make God happy. Share your snacks, share your toys, and share your friendship with others. Also remember to come to Mass each Sunday! Jesus tells us that when we share our food with others, God is happy. 6 WE HOPE EVERYONE IS HAVING A GOOD SUMMER. STAY SAFE AND ENJOY THE REST OF IT.
