STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION As the Lord spoke to me, the spirit entered me and set me on my feet, and I heard the one who was speaking say to me, Son of man, I am sending you. Ezekiel 2:2-3 God asks each of us to d some special work for Him. He gives us the resources we need to do His work. However, do we listen to God when He calls? Do we get up on our feet and give our talent to do the work He asks of us? 3 FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JULY 5, 2015 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Concluding the recent notices of books I thought looked interesting, here are some miscellaneous titles, mostly non-fiction: Lisa Grunwald and Stephen Adler have compiled a collection of reflections, some, but not all, favorable to traditional Christian teachings, in The Marriage Book: Centuries of Advice, Inspiration, and Cautionary Tales From Adam to Zoloft (Simon and Schuster). Charles Seife s Virtual Unreality (Viking) voices concern that the special properties of the Internet turn digital information into the most virulent, most contagious pathogen that humanity has ever encountered. And there s no vaccine. Along the way, he cites the example of the distinguished novelist Philip Roth, who contacted Wikipedia to deny that the main character in his novel The Human Stain was based on the critic Anatole Broyard, only to be told that I Roth, was not a credible source. Richard Whittle s Predator: Secret Origin of the Drone Revolution (Henry Holt) describes the work of Israeli engineer Abraham Karem, who developed what the author calls an intercontinental sniper rifle giving operators the capability of eliminating targets thousands of miles away by squeezing a joystick. Ian Bostridge s Schubert s Winter Journey (Knopf) tells of how, knowing he was near the end of his life, the Composer created 24 songs for male voice and piano based on poems by Wilhelm Mu ller. The songs, which describe a desolate and lonely wanderer, have been performed in recent times by the author, a tenor, and by the late baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. Franz Schubert, who was just 31 when he died, said that those who hear the songs should imagine a man whose health will never be right again, and who in sheer despair over this ever makes things worse and worse, instead of better; imagine a man, I say, whose most brilliant hopes (continued above) EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS NEEDED Fr. Andrew is looking for more Ministers of Holy Communion to join Saint Joseph s Ministry to nursing home residents. If you are an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and are able to volunteer some time one or two Sundays a month to take Communion (after the 9:00 am Sunday Mass) to the residents of Care One s Oradell Health Care Center, please contact Fr. But the songs are, for all that, a triumph of the human spirit. James Ward s The Perfection of the Paper Clip (Touchstone) describes the origin of the office supplies and stationary we use every day, even in the computer era. His account of the post-world War II invention of the ballpoint pen is very interesting and entertaining. The story of how the Bic, the world s top-selling ballpoint pen (100 billion sold, more than half the number of ballpoints ever sold), got its name is especially funny. Andrea Mays s The Millionaire and the Bard (Simon and Schuster) is the story of Washington s Folger Shakespeare Library, the great institution that was founded through the enthusiasm of American oil businessman Henry Folger, the foremost collector of First Folio texts. Finally, Ivan Southall s novel for children, Ash Road (Text Classics; originally published in 1965) has been reissued. Reviewer Meghan Fox Gurdon, in her notice of this book, says that it tells of how careless boys set off a horrifying wildfire in the Australian bush country, resulting in what Southall describes as hundreds of little fires falling out of the sky, riding along on the wind like nightmarish birds. Peter, 13, who thought the fire would be very different, had imagined trees burning like candles, silently; forests of beautiful candles, and people running with their arms in the air like suppliants praying. Something like Christmas in a cathedral; reverent, majestic, awe-inspiring. Not brutish like this. Not lonely like this. The book is a scary reminder of the destructive possibilities of forest fires, which we should all keep in mind this summer. Incidentally, if you refer to Smokey Bear as Smokey the Bear, you can be in for almost as much criticism as if you drink a bottle of soda, which apparently is becoming America s ultimate transgression. David Hubba DEADLINE FOR MEMORIAL PAVERS AUGUST 1 You can still reserve an engraved brick in your name or that of a loved one to be placed in front of any of the statues in our Garden of Saints or added to the Commemorative Brick Path between the church and the grotto. The donation is $125 for each brick. Order forms are available in the parish office/rectory or in our church literature racks. Orders must be received by August 1 so that the bricks can be inscribed and inserted before the Fall.

4 PILGRIMAGE TO SPAIN & PORTUGAL OCTOBER Join Fr. Roy Regaspi on a 10-day pilgrimage to Portugal and Spain to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the birth of St. Teresa of Avila. Departing from Newark, the pilgrimage will travel from Lisbon to Santarem and Fatima (and the Shrine of Fatima), to Alba de Tormes (the burial place of St. Teresa), to Salamanca ( the Golden City ) and Avila, then to Madrid (and the famous Prado Museum), El Escorial (built as King Philip I s residence, which now serves as a monastery, royal palace, museum and school), and ending at Toledo (the ancient capital that so inspired the famous artist El Greco). God of love, show us our place in this world as channels of your love for all the creatures of this earth, for not one of them is forgotten in your sight. Enlighten those who possess power and money that they may avoid the sin of indifference, that they may love the common good, advance the weak, and care for this world in which we live. The poor and the earth are crying out. O Lord, seize us with your power and light, help us to protect all life, to prepare for a better future, for the coming of your Kingdom of justice, peace, love and beauty. Praise be to you! Amen. No prior requests can be taken. Mass Intention requests will not be taken over the phone. We can only honor requests made in person and submitted on the Mass Intention Form. Please tear the Form (p. 5) out of the bulletin. Bring the completed form to the parish office when you arrange for the Masses. State the full name of the person for whom the Mass Intention is requested. Please print clearly. Mass Intention Donation is $10 per request. Donation is payable at the time of request to: Saint Joseph Church. For the first two weeks that the book is open, there is a maximum limit of 5 Masses per family. Please do not request all Mass Intentions to be scheduled for Sunday and Holy Days. 6 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ LAUDATO SI, mi Signore Praise be to you, my Lord. These are the words that open Pope Francis recent encyclical on ecology and care for God s creation. These words, quoting St. Francis of Assisi s beautiful canticle, remind us that our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us. Pope Francis addresses Laudato Si to every person on the planet, for we all share a common home the earth. He focuses on a number of important themes. A Moral and Spiritual Challenge. The ecological crisis, Pope Francis writes, is a summons to profound interior conversion to renew our relationships with God, one another, and the created world. Care for God s Creation. God created the world and entrusted it to us as a gift. Now we have the responsibility to care for and protect it and all people, who are part of creation. Protecting human dignity is strongly linked to care for creation. We are All Connected. We are connected to the rest of the human family, to the created world, and to those who will come after us in future generations. Impact on the Poor. People in poverty have contributed least to climate change, yet they are disproportionately impacted by it. As a result of excessive use of natural resource by wealthy nations, those who are poor experience pollution, lack of access to clean water, hunger, and more. Called to Solidarity. We are one human family and have a shared responsibility for others and for creation. Wealthy countries have a responsibility to reduce consumption of non-renewal resources and should help poorer nations develop in sustainable ways. Technological and economic development must serve human beings and enhance human dignity, instead of creating an economy of exclusion, so that all people have access to what is needed for authentic human development. Supporting Life, Protecting Creation. Concern for nature is incompatible with failure to protect vulnerable human beings, such as unborn children, people with disabilities, or victims of human trafficking. Pope Francis calls for a change in lifestyle and consumption. We can make important changes as individuals, families, and communities, and as civil and political leaders. Hope and Joy. Injustice is not invincible (no. 74) and we act knowing that we seek to live out God s vision of renewed relationships with God, ourselves, one another, and creation. HOW YOU CAN RESPOND Each of us are called to take concrete steps from reducing consumption to working for political change to better care for creation. Here are some ideas. 1. Become more aware of our connectedness. Care for one another and creation includes understanding that everything is connected (no. 91) and that the economy, politics, community involvement, and technology all affect the future of the planet and humankind. How can we become more aware of our connectedness? 2. Changes to lifestyle and consumption habits can make a big difference. For example, get a re-usable water bottle, take shorter showers, walk, bike or take public transportation instead of driving, recycle, compost food waste, and buy energy efficient appliances. 3. Make changes institutionally at your parish, school, or workplace. For example, start recycling and composting, use washable dinnerware in cafeterias, share electronically instead of printing, do an energy audit, and install solar panels. 4. Support local efforts to solve environmental problems. Community groups around the country are working to make city, county, and state-wide changes that can make a big difference. Find out what is going on locally and get involved. 5. Contact your members of Congress to share Pope Francis message and urge action to address climate change.
