3 TWENTY FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ SEPTEMBER 18, 2016 From early in the Church s history, there were attempts to simplify the accounts of the life of Jesus by blending the four Gospels into one narrative. Although this had certain advantages, it also lost sight of the particular characteristics of the Evangelists, each of whom had his own points of emphasis that enrich our understanding of Jesus. As the Sulpician Scripture scholar Father Ronald Witherup has pointed out: There is a reason the Church has preserved four different versions of the story of Jesus of Nazareth. Each tells the story from a slightly different angle. Like a complex portrait that, when viewed from different angles, takes on different emphases, so it is with the four Gospels. The feast of St. Matthew falls on this Wednesday. Jesus called Matthew from his tax collector s post at Capernaum and invited him to be one of his apostles. Matthew was also responsible for the Gospel that bears his name, the longest of the four validated narratives about Jesus and the one that contains the richest selection of his remembered sayings and teachings, including the Sermon on the Mount (Mt 5-7), where we find so many unforgettable passages, such as the version of the Our Father we are so familiar with, the Beatitudes and many other familiar sayings. Matthew s Gospel proclaims Christ s new law, announced from a hillside near the Sea of Galilee, inviting us to see it as the (continued above) FROM THE PASTOR S DESK A SALUTE TO THOSE WHO SHARE THE FAITH Parents are truly the primary catechists of their children. They prepare the soil and plant the first seeds of faith. On Catechetical Sunday, we not only highlight the work of catechists in parishes and schools, but we also commend parents and guardians and encourage them to take seriously their role of making their Catholic households a place where faith is passed on to the next generation. Consider becoming a volunteer catechist and sharing your faith with our parish children. No previous experience is necessary. You will receive training. Matthew s Gospel has often been called the one that sees the Church as the new Israel. It has a number of passages that are fundamental for describing the Church, including Peter s profession of faith in Mt 16, 13-20, verses long seen by Catholics as being at the root of the papacy. In the first volume of his remarkable reflections on Matthew s Gospel, Fire of Mercy, Heart of the Word, Erasmo Leiva-Merikakis speaks of the mysterious, abiding connection between the Church and Israel: Jesus calls forth twelve men, because he intends, not to abolish, but to universalize the vocation of Israel. The twelve tribes descended from Jacob s children represent the totality of God s people, and Jesus comes precisely to fulfill all the Word s promises to the patriarchs. No one is called or saved outside of Israel, but Israel must be expanded to all mankind. Here is the marriage of the utterly new to the utterly ancient, and such an event will comprise rejections, convulsions, death, and Resurrection. In St. Matthew s Gospel, we have an enduringly powerful description of Jesus and his new Kingdom. Its words will always be among the greatest that enlighten and inspire our journeys of faith. Msgr. SPECIAL NOON MASS FOR THOSE AFFECTED BY ALCOHOLISM SEPTEMBER 17 A special mass and support group meeting for all who are affected by the disease of alcoholism will take place at Church of St. Mary, 20 Legion Place, Closter, NJ on Saturday, September 17 at 12:00 noon. Mass is offered for the support, healing and recovery of not only the man/woman directly infected with the abuse of alcohol or drugs, but also for anyone involved in the life of the alcoholic or drug addict. The Saint Joseph Parish Pastoral Council works to evaluate existing parish programs, organizations and activities and to suggest new ones. Members share responsibility for evaluating and enhancing the parish s financial health and development and offer wisdom and guidance to assist our pastor, Monsignor Hubba, in his leadership role. The Council consists of the pastor, a member of the parish Finance Committee and eight members of the parish who serve three-year terms. MINISTRY OF MOTHERHOOD ("M.O.M.") FALL KICK-OFF! SEPTEMBER 28 Ministry of Motherhood warmly invites all mothers to join in our monthly prayer gathering. M.O.M. aims to provide mothers with an opportunity to meet, pray, reflect and share the blessings and challenges of motherhood in a fun, nopressure setting. Martin De Benedetto joined the Pastoral Council in 2015 and has been a parishioner since He and his wife Maria live in Oradell and have two collegeage children, Daniella and Michael. Martin is active in Cornerstone, and he and Maria worked with engaged couples in the parish marriage preparation program. He is a Director of Brand Public Relations at Novartis Pharmaceuticals in East Hanover, NJ.
