3 TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ SEPTEMBER 13, 2015 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK When Pope Francis visits Washington, he will declare Franciscan Friar Junípero Serra ( ) a saint. Since Serra has been unfairly and wrongly criticized in quarters that like to pounce on the Church with hostility, I thought you might like to hear something about him. He was a Spaniard who, after being ordained in 1738, first put his keen intellect to work as a brilliantly successful professor of philosophy at Mallorca s University of Palma, then answered a call he had long felt: to become a missionary. After a sea voyage of 99 days, filled with hardships that included shortages of food and water, he landed in Mexico, then proceeded to walk 275 miles to Mexico City, because he wished to honor the Franciscan tradition of impoverished journeys by foot. Along the way, an insect bite that led to an infection left him with a painful impairment that would remain with him through the rest of his life. For nine years, he worked among the Pame Indians who lived in severe poverty in the rugged Sierra Gorda mountains, teaching them the catechism and prayers, but also farming and weaving. By the time he left them, they were described as being well-housed, well-fed, docile and devout. Serra told them: I arrived with nothing. I leave you with nothing, but I leave you with a great treasure, the faith. After Spain expelled the Jesuits from their missions in Baja California (Mexico), Serra, then 56, was assigned to take over their efforts, leading a team of fifteen other Friars. A year later, his work expanded to Alta California (today s State of California), where he would found 9 of the Franciscans 21 missions, the first being San Diego. On their way north to Monterey, Friar Junípero and his party, after encountering an earthquake, stopped at a small Indian village they named for the feast celebrated the day of their arrival: Nuestra Sen ora de los Angeles, now a famous metropolis. Fr. Serra had a strong love for the Indians he served. He baptized 6,100 of them. And he often had to contend with civilian and military authorities who were not equally well disposed to them. Once, when the Indians were being cruelly mistreated, Serra traveled 2,400 miles to and from Mexico City to defend their rights before the Spanish Viceroy. At times, Serra s friars punished recalcitrant Indians in ways that were then common but today are not; but the friars accomplishments won the universal praise of those who witnessed them. It was Fr. Serra s fate to be associated with abuses that took place long after he died, which, in (continued above) 3 any case, do not deserve to be compared with the days when California s government offered $5 bounties for Indian scalps. Bishop Thaddeus Shubsda of Monterey has insisted that recent criticisms of Fr. Serra are unfounded and has pointed out the complete absence of documentary evidence that Serra ever mistreated Indians: To the detractors we say: if there is proof, let us see it. The historian Father Albert Nevins has superbly summarized the work of the California Franciscans, writing that Serra and his friars wanted nothing for themselves. They found a people annihilating one another in cannibalistic rituals and brought them into the peace of Christ. They integrated the Indian into their own society and did not destroy him as did the advancing Anglo-Saxons. Those who saw the California missions first hand many of these witnesses were neither Catholic nor Spanish had nothing but admiration for the work of the padres. Our nation s Capitol has a gallery of statues honoring great people from each state. One of California s two statues depicts Father Junípero Serra. Some fanatics are persistently pressing to have it removed, so far unsuccessfully. No matter what happens in the future, Fr. Serra will be getting a far more important recognition from the Pope. And from a place that confers more honor and happiness than even Congress can provide, he will be able to fulfill a hope he expressed when his death was imminent: I promise, if the Lord in his infinite mercy grants me eternal happiness, which I do not deserve because of my sins and faults, that I shall pray for all the missions and for the conversion of so many whom I have left unconverted. David Hubba LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR The Little Sisters of the Poor are an international congregation of women religious founded in 1839 by Saint Jeanne Jugan that serve the elderly poor in over 30 countries including the U.S. Saint Joseph Parish has long been a great supporter of their good works. (The sister of pastor emeritus Fr. George Reilly was a Little Sister.) The Sisters will be present at Saint Joseph at all Masses next Sunday. We hope you will continue to generously support their good works. THIRD SATURDAY PRAYER SEPTEMBER 19 All are invited to join the Legion of Mary after the 8:30 am Mass on Saturday, September 19 in Mary s Chapel for the Rosary and the continuing series on the virtues of the Blessed Mother.

4 WELCOME TO OUR NEW PARISH SECRETARY We are very pleased to welcome our new parish secretary, Geraldine ( Gerry ) Carolan. Gerry and her husband Michael have been parishioners of Saint Joseph for over 18 years. They have three children (all Saint Joseph School graduates!): Michael (currently a junior at Mount St. Mary s University in Maryland), Mary Kate (a freshman at Fairfield University) and Kristen (a sophomore at Immaculate Heart Academy). Gerry grew up in the Bronx and attended St. Barnabas Elementary School and Cardinal Spellman High School. She previously worked as a secretary and in medical billing. Most recently she was the substitute secretary for Saint Joseph School (both buildings) during lunch hours and as needed. Gerry loves to read and to travel. She and her family visited Ireland this summer the birthplace of both her parents (counties Mayo and Clare). Gerry s daughters play Irish music (Mary Kate on tin whistle and flute; Kristen on piano) and both perform Irish step dancing. Gerry, céad míle fáilte a hundred thousand welcomes! WOMEN S CORNERSTONE SEPTEMBER 16 The summer is over, school has started and our Cornerstone meetings continue. We have had good meetings during the summer months and the Holy Spirit has been with us. As we go into the fall season, let s continue to keep up the pace as we move toward Cornerstone 24 in March. We will be meeting this Wednesday evening September 16 at 7:30 pm in the Knights of Columbus on River Road in New Milford. (Women s Cornerstone meetings take place the third Wednesday of each month.) If you haven t been able to attend, we invite you to make a commitment to be with us on Wednesday night. We know you will enjoy getting a refreshing breeze of the Spirit. ROY REGASPI JANUARY Catechists and all parish families with children in our Religious Education program or enrolled in Saint Joseph School are invited to attend the 9:00 am Mass next Sunday, September 20. Catechetical Sunday, an annual event that marks the start of our Religious Education program, is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. It is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. Please join us. How often have you thought about visiting the Holy Land? How often have you said, One of these days I will go to the Holy Land, where Jesus and Mary walked and lived? Now it is my joy to invite you to this great retreat-pilgrimage to the Holy Land in the footsteps of Jesus and Mary. (Tuesday classes will begin on September 22 from 3:45-5:10 pm). Classes for Grades 7-8 will be held on Wednesday, September 23 from 4:45-6:10 pm or 6:30-7:55 pm.
