As you can see from the collection amounts listed above, our collection for last Sunday was well below the normal $13-14,000 that is typically donated each week. Saint Joseph relies on the weekly collection to meet most of its regular expenses, including snow clearance and heating bills. IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO SEND IN YOUR DONATION FOR THE WEEK OF JANUARY 24. 3 FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JANUARY 31, 2016 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK The latest edition of Butler s Lives of the Saints, which prides itself on its stringent standards of historical accuracy, admits that Of St. Blaise, nothing can be known with certainty, and very little with any probability, because devotion to him began to be significant only five hundred years after his death (early in the 4th century). Oddly enough, when it arose, he became very popular indeed, especially as measured by the number of patronages attributed to him. Blaise is the patron saint of doctors, plasterers and stone carvers, pets and cattle, and just about the entire clothing industry (weavers and wool dealers, tailors, tanners, hosiery workers, shoemakers and hat makers.) But, above all, he is famous for his blessing for throats, which takes its origin from an account that he saved the life of a boy who was choking from an awkwardly swallowed fish bone, a happy event that occurred as Blaise was being arrested during a time when persecution was raging in the area of Sebaste (in the Armenian region of today s Turkey), where he was bishop. The traditional account of his death describes how he was tortured by being raked over with terrible metal wool combs (which explains his association with the wool trade) before being beheaded. The beautiful blessing of throats, which has been enlarged to invoke aid against other illness as well, asks that Through the intercession of St. Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from every disease of the throat and from every other illness: in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. It is administered with the x-shaped candles of the St. Andrew s cross, tied together with a red ribbon (the liturgical color for martyrs). The candles are touched to the front of the throat as the prayer is said. While it is allowable to give the blessing to everyone at once, we will offer it to you individually after today s Masses and also at those of February 3, St. Blaise s feast day. (continued above) Philadelphia s Franklin Institute will be closing its wonderful exhibit Vatican Splendors on February 15. In eleven galleries, you can see two hundred beautiful objects of art from many eras: paintings, mosaics, sculpture, liturgical objects and books, to name just some. There are also finely crafted models on a number of areas of interest, and even models made out of Lego blocks. Even if you can t go, you will be well rewarded if you visit the exhibit s website: exhibit/new/vaticansplendors, a real treat, with many stunning pictures, an enjoyable video and an excellent Educator s Guide. With Catholic Schools Week beginning today, I thought you might enjoy this thought from Eric Gill ( ), an acclaimed English sculptor, writer and typographer who converted to Catholicism: If we accept the religious view of man s nature. we are compelled to take a very different view of education. No longer can we think merely of getting on in the commercial and materialistic sense. We must now think of getting on in the sense of getting heavenwards. And in everything we learn and in everything we teach our children or pupils, we must bear this fact in mind. We must learn to get on in the world not as an end in itself, but as a means of getting heavenwards. Any education which neglects this fact, and to the extent which it neglects it, is false education, because it is false to man. It is untrue; it is not in accordance with his nature as child of God and heir also. Msgr. Franciscan Friar Johnpaul Cafiero, well-known inspirational speaker (who visited Saint Joseph Parish in 2012) will lead us in three amazing evenings of reflection His storytelling and humor bring to life the message of Jesus words to us, his disciples today. Topics such as: faith and doubt, addictions and conversion, depression and surrender, death and new life will be explored. An enjoyable and faithstrengthening experience for junior high students through senior citizens. Come, bring a friend or family member for an hour and a half they will not soon forget. 5 FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JANUARY 31, 2016 DESPITE THE STORM THEY MARCHED ON A blizzard was coming to Washington, D.C. on Friday, January 22. The Federal government closed at noon. Schools were closed too. But one group numbering in the thousands filled the streets around the U.S. Capitol. Marchers for the annual March for Life, which protests U.S. abortion policies on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, marched on. The gathering at the Washington Monument came just as the first flurries fell in the beginning of the storm. This movement to end abortion in this country is bigger than us and it is bigger than a weather event, said Jeanne Mancini, president of March for Life. The Pro-Life demonstration has been held in D.C. without interruption for more than four decades on the anniversary of the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in America. The theme for this year s march is Pro-Life Is ProWoman ideas that go hand-in-hand. As marchforlife.org states: The truth is that life is the empowering choice for women. It s best for women and families facing unplanned pregnancies, and it s best for developing female babies in the womb. Abortion harms women, and affects our society as a whole, in so many ways. After 43 years and 58 million-plus legal abortions in America, numerous well-documented studies in medical journals show that abortion poses immediate adverse affects on women s health including blood clots, hemorrhage, incomplete abortions, infection, injury to the cervix and other organs, cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, renal failure, metabolic disorder, shock, and missed ectopic pregnancy, as well as long-term physical and psychological consequences. The many young women in their 20s and 30s from the organization Students for Life of America who marched in Washington held signs: I am the Pro-Life Generation. These young women have gotten the message abortion is unhealthy and dangerous for both women and pre-born children Every January 22, pro-lifers march for women and unborn children.
