We, too, can experience that same joy if we take time to open our hearts, listen to God, ask for His direction and allow the Holy Spirit to guide our lives and our decisions. ARCHBISHOP S ANNUAL APPEAL Many thanks to the 264 families who have already pledged their support. We have currently received pledges for $60,302 of our assigned goal of $63,000. For those who have not yet had the chance, pledge envelopes are available at the doors of the church or at the rectory. (You may place your envelope in the collection basket or drop it off at the rectory.) With everyone s help we can reach and perhaps exceed our goal and really make a difference. MONTHLY BEREAVEMENT GROUP If you have lost a loved one, you are welcome to visit a Bereavement Group which meets monthly on the first Thursday of the month at 7:30 pm at the Church of the Immaculate Conception at 900 Darlington Avenue, Mahwah, NJ. The purpose of the group is to provide spiritual and emotional support; to provide knowledge of the mourning process and the resources; and to offer a caring, compassionate and confidential atmosphere for the sharing of experiences. 3 THE PASTOR S COLUMN SUNDAYS & FIRST COMMUNION If you belong to one of the committees of our parish, you know that every meeting begins with an icebreaker. The icebreaker is usually a question designed to help the members of the group learn more about one another. I believe that committees work much better when the members know something about one another. At the last Parish Finance Council this was the icebreaker, First Communions will be celebrated during the coming weeks at our parish, share a memory from your First Holy Communion. That question made the members think back to their own First Communions. One of the members even came to the meeting with the prayer book and rosary beads that he received on the occasion. As you read this column, memories of your own First Holy Communion may be coming to your mind. What do you remember? I remember my First Communion. It took place at Queen of Peace Church in North Arlington on May 5, I received the sacrament from the pastor, Monsignor Peter B. O Connor. Yes, I wore a white suit with white buckskin shoes. There was a small family party at home after the Mass. Like that member of the Finance Council whom I mentioned, I still have my First Communion prayer book. In fact, I looked at it when I was writing this column. Thinking of my First Communion Day fills me with warm and pleasant memories associated with my family, with my home parish, with Sister James Aloysius (my second grader teacher), and with feeling closer to God by sharing the Eucharist. Over the years as I have continued to receive Holy Communion, I have grown in my appreciation of what it means to receive the Body and Blood of Christ, of what it means to be in a holy communion with God and with my fellow Christians. This weekend, and for the following three weekends, the second grade children of our parish will be celebrating their First Holy Communion at our 5 pm, 10:30 am and our 12:30 pm Masses in our upper church. (Note: there will be no First Communions at our 5 pm next Saturday, April 26.) In total, 117 children will be sharing at the Table of the Lord for the first time. The Church suggests that Easter Time is the perfect season of the year for First Communions since Easter is the season for the Sacraments of Initiation, namely, Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. That is also the reason why we celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation during this season. Bishop Marconi will be celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation at our parish this coming FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER, APRIL 21, Friday evening, April 26, at 7 pm, and then on Saturday, April 27, at 9:30 am and 1:30 pm. In total, 112 teenagers of our parish will be confirmed. You might wonder why we celebrate First Communion at our Sunday Masses and not at some other time. A document of the Church dealing with Easter says, It is also appropriate that children receive their First Communion on one of the Sundays of Easter. Sunday is the day that celebrates the Resurrection. It is the day the Spirit brought the Church to life. It is the day we dedicate to the Lord. It is the day the community of the Church comes together. It is a day for family. So it is most appropriate that Sunday is the day for First Communion. (That includes Saturday evenings for we see that Mass as part of our Sunday celebration.) Also, celebrating First Communions at a regularly scheduled Mass reminds us that the children receiving the Lord are also being fully initiated into the weekly gathering of the Church. They are now allowed to join the communion procession and come forward to share with us the Body and Blood Christ. They are now truly Sunday people. Having First Communion at Sunday Mass also allows us to support the children and their families by our presence. We sometimes forget that the children we baptize become the responsibility of all the Church. We have a duty to help them to grow in their Catholic Faith. We do that most of all by the example we give them. I often say that faith is caught more than taught. By that I mean that children learn from how we live our faith. By celebrating First Communion at our Sunday Masses we are providing the children and their families with an example of faith. We are there because we believe. We believe the Lord is Risen. We believe that God speaks to us in scripture readings. We believe that God loves us so much that God comes to us in a piece of consecrated bread and a sip of consecrated wine. We believe that what we do at Sunday Mass changes us and can change the world. By our presence at the First Communion Masses, you and I are sharing our faith and helping the children and their families to see that First Communion is far more than just a family social event, and far more than a onetime event. It is the beginning of many, many Holy Communions as we go through life. Wouldn t it be wonderful if sometime in the future, when people are thinking about their own First Holy Communions, they remember the faith they saw and the love they felt at their First Communion Mass on a Sunday at Saint Joseph Parish? 4 ANNUAL LITURGY FOR THOSE WHO HAVE SUFFERED THE LOSS OF A CHILD The 26th Annual Liturgy for Those Whose Children Have Died will be held on Friday, May 10, at 7:30 PM at Notre Dame RC Church, 359 Central Avenue, North Caldwell. All parents who have suffered the death of a child of any age are invited to attend with their families and friends. A personal witness will also be offered as the name of each child is read during the Mass. Preregistration is requested by calling STILL TIME TO COME! PROOF OF THE RESURRECTION Father Tom recently blessed the handiwork of the members of the Saint Joseph Prayer Shawl Ministry. He called their knitted scarves and hats, crocheted blankets and shawls (all intended for those who are sick or in need), and their unselfish commitment to helping others through their work and prayers, beautiful proofs of the Resurrection. Real music professionals will help students explore the basics of singing, acting and dancing. No prior experience is necessary. Enrollment is limited, so register early! 6 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from Saint John 10: Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee We know the sound of our parents voices and likewise, our parents know the sound of our voices. Our parents also know us by name, so that when they call us by name, we listen and know they are talking to us. Our parents teach us things that we need to know, such as looking both ways before crossing the street. In today s Gospel, Jesus talks about sheep. Jesus tells us that sheep know the sound of the shepherd s voice so that when the shepherd calls them, they come to him. Likewise, the shepherd knows his sheep. The shepherd keeps the sheep safe and directs them where to go. In this Gospel, Jesus compares us to the sheep and tells us that he is our shepherd. Like the shepherd, Jesus knows his people. He knows us by name and he knows if we love him and if we follow his rules. Jesus tells us that if we love him then we also love God because Jesus and God are one person. Jesus will always look out for us. Jesus will always direct us to follow the right path and to do the right things. Jesus will keep us on the road to heaven. But like our parents, we need to obey and listen to him. How lucky we are to have Jesus the Lord as our Shepherd! Jesus is the Good Shepherd and we are his sheep. MISSION OF THE WEEK Every night before you go to bed, pray to Jesus to help you love him and follow his ways so he can shepherd us to heaven.
