3 THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JANUARY 24, 2016 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Thursday is the feast of St. Thomas Aquinas (1224/5-1274), commonly regarded as the Church s greatest theologian. He was a son of Italian nobility who disappointed his family by joining the Dominicans (a new order of friars founded by St. Dominic) instead of the more prestigious Benedictines. Dominic required his men to commit themselves to what he called an assiduous study of divine truth, which he saw as an essential preparation for their special mission of preaching. To that time, no other order in the Church had this emphasis to the same degree. In his short life, Thomas was amazingly productive. After completing his own education, some of it under the supervision of another great scholar, St. Albert the Great, Thomas wrote books of theology and philosophy, commentaries on Scripture, and a number of shorter works, including sermons, prayers and the liturgy for the feast of Corpus Christi (with its famous hymns Pange Lingua and O Salutaris Hostia ). Thomas sometimes dictated to as many as four secretaries at a time, each of them working on different projects. His greatest work was his Summa Theologica, a vast summary of Catholic truth. Monsignor Joseph Frey, introducing a small book that attempts to summarize it, writes that We have records of a great many cases in which complete strangers wrote to ask him questions, and sometimes rather ridiculous questions. To all of these he replied with a characteristic mixture of patience and that sort of rationality, which in some rational people tends to be impatience. Somebody, for instance, asked him whether the names of all the blessed were written on a scroll exhibited in heaven. He wrote back with untiring calm: So far as I can see, this is not the case; but there is no harm in saying so. Chesterton has rightly called St. Thomas Aquinas s works the great central Synthesis of history. But besides his great achievements of the mind, Thomas s personal holiness was as great as that of any of the most devout of the saints. He was a giant in physical size, in intellect and in sanctity. VISITS THIS WEEKEND TO SPEAK AT ALL MASSES New Hope Incorporated, a pregnancy resource center that was started 31 years ago operating first out of volunteers homes and then from an office in Englewood, has now moved to Westwood, NJ. Its all-volunteer staff provides help for single first-time mothers and their babies including subsidies for housing, daycare, education and counseling. New Hope s mission is to help young mothers attain emotional stability, parenting expertise, physical wellbeing, spiritual serenity and growth, financial security and a meaningful career. Mentors work with young moms for three years unique in outreach programs. In turn, the women sign a contract to abide by the rules set forth in order to remain in the program. Volunteers from New Hope will be at all the doors of the church this weekend to answer any questions and to accept any donations. The Center s phone number ( ) is answered 24 hours/7 days a week. As its name signifies, the Summa Theologica is the sum total of all theological knowledge, a vast synthesis in which is unfolded all that can be known about God and man. It is divided into three parts which deal with God, man and the God-man, respectively. It comprises 38 tracts, 631 questions, about 3,000 articles, 10,000 objections and their answers. But, as Aquinas says in his Prologue, he wrote the Summa for newcomers to theological study: Because a teacher of Catholic truth ought not only to teach the learned but also to instruct the beginners, in accordance with the words of the Apostle: As unto little ones in Christ, I gave you milk to drink, not meat (1 Cor. 3/1,2) we purpose in this book to treat of whatever belongs to the Christian religion in such a way as may tend to the instruction of beginners. Look what we found on New Hope s Website! Despite his towering intellect, St. Thomas was a kind and humble man, qualities G. K. PERSONALIZED PAVERS You can still order a brick paver with your name or the name of a loved one inscribed on it to be placed in either our Commemorative Walk beside the church or in front of one of the statues in our Garden of Saints behind the rectory/parish office on Harrison Street. OUR LENTEN MISSION MARCH REFLECTIONS ON THE LAST SEVEN WORDS OF JESUS Friar Johnpaul Cafiero will lead us in three amazing evenings of reflection in his engaging and informative style. His storytelling and humor bring to life the message of Jesus words to us, his disciples today. Topics such as: faith and doubt, addictions and conversion, depression and surrender, death and new life will be explored. An enjoyable and faith strengthening experience for junior high students through senior citizens. Come, bring a friend or family member for an hour and a half they will not soon forget. EVENING PRAYER & BLESSING OF CANDLES TO MARK END OF YEAR OF CONSECRATED LIFE FEBRUARY 2 On Tuesday, February 2 in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark at 7:30 pm, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, the Archdiocese will observe the day with a special emphasis on the call to consecrated life. This Feast is also known as Candlemas Day, the day on which candles are blessed symbolizing Christ who is the Light of the World. So too those in consecrated life are called to reflect the light of Jesus to all peoples. Come join us in joyful prayer with the blessing and lighting of candles as we conclude what Pope Francis named the Year of Consecrated Life, and thank the consecrated women and men of our Archdiocese for their selfless gift of service to our local Church. ED.: sjcnjre.org FAMILY SHELTER MINISTRY St. Peter the Apostle Church in River Edge, together with their support congregations, Temple Avodat Shalom, The First Congregational Church of River Edge and our own church Saint Joseph, will be hosting families in the Family Promise of Bergen County program during the week of January 24 January 31. Families with children who are currently homeless and working towards finding permanent housing through Family Promise will be calling St. Peter s their home that week. All men in the parish who have made Cornerstone are invited to attend this monthly meeting to enjoy great camaraderie, spiritual renewal, and to plan for our next Cornerstone Retreat.
