Tickets are $45 a person and include a wonderful dinner by Clifton s Nightingale Catering (serving the finest in beefsteak & chicken banquets since 1938) with music by our own Peter Greco. 3 SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ FEBRUARY 11, 2018 ARE YOU CELEBRATING A SPECIAL WEDDING ANNIVERSARY IN 2018? FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Marriage has always been a central concern both to the Church and to civil government, even when the State has been at its most horrifying worst. Before Hitler married Eva Braun, the official registrar asked them, in keeping with the most punctilious German legality of the Nazi eugenics laws of those dark times, whether they were both of pure Aryan descent. Because they ended their lives right after the wedding, they didn t, like other German newlyweds of the era, get a copy of Mein Kampf, paid for by government funds. (Hitler got rich from his book s royalties, which were worth $5 to $8 a copy in today s money.) Because this Wednesday is Valentine s Day, it is a good time to reflect on the importance and blessing of marriage. For Catholic believers, married life is meant to draw its inspiration and strength from Jesus Christ, mirroring his relationship with the Church. In their deep commitment to their spouses, in the depth and permanence of the love they pledge to one another, in the joys and sacrifices they accept, and in the bringing of their children into the world, husbands and wives stand at the heart of the kingdom God is constantly striving to build. The Catholic philosopher and theologian David Schindler has said very aptly that the measure of the marital state is the free-intelligent act that says forever. His remark, which solidly represents our tradition s view of marriage, is much in keeping with a delightful phrase from the Mozarabic Sacramentary, the Catholic ritual book that was used in Spain until the 11th century, when it was largely replaced by the Roman Rite (although the older usage is still allowed there today). The Mozarabic Rite describes marriage as the duty of inseparable love. The modern Spanish poet Antonio Machado has lines that say: I chat with a companion with me to the end who speaks alone may hope to speak to God one day. I hope all the married couples of our parish, and all who aspire to the beautiful vocation of marriage, will cherish their lives and dreams with renewed vividness this Valentine s Day. We all need your witness of committed love. Msgr. David Hubba The Archdiocese would like to honor those couples who celebrate five, twenty-five and fifty years of Christian marriage in the year These anniversary liturgies will take place in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark on the following dates: April 29 at 3:00 pm (5 years and 25 years) May 6 at 3:00 pm (50 years) We extend our warmest congratulations to those who are celebrating one of these special anniversaries and hope you will be able to attend the liturgy. The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence. On a day of Fast, one only (1) full meal is permitted, and two (2) smaller meals, which, if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence. 2. COLLECTION FOR RETIRED PRIESTS ASH WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 14 Please be generous in the Ash Wednesday collection for the retired priests of the Archdiocese of Newark who have walked with us through many a Lenten journey and been there for us in good times and in bad. 3

4 STATIONS OF THE CROSS DURING LENT The Stations (or Way) of the Cross is a Catholic devotion during which the faithful make a spiritual pilgrimage of prayer through meditating on the chief scenes of Christ s sufferings and death images of which are typically hung on the walls of the church. The Stations of the Cross will be held at Saint Joseph Church EVERY FRIDAY IN LENT (except Good Friday) at 7:00 pm. All are welcome to attend. TIME TO FILL YOUR RICE BOWL Cardboard rice bowls to help Catholic Relief Services support those in need around the world are available at the doors of the church (or at the Parish Office/Rectory). All donations (in the form of a check made out to Saint Joseph Church) must be dropped off or sent to the Religious Education Office located at 105 Harrison Street, New Milford, NJ by Wednesday, March 28. (Please do not send in actual boxes or coins.) SACRAMENT OF PENANCE IN LENT Individual confessions are regularly heard every Saturday from 4:00-5:00 pm in the Reconciliation Room in the Upper Church (near the main entrance). There will be a Communal Penance Service at St. Peter s Church on Monday, March 12 at 7:30 pm. SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ 4 SHARING GOD S BLESSINGS ANNUAL APPEAL Last weekend was our Commitment Weekend for the 2018 Sharing God s Blessings Annual Appeal. This year, our parish goal is $80,111. The Annual Appeal provides the poor with food, shelter and clothing; makes religious education, spiritual guidance and CYO programs available for the young; insures the future leadership of the Church with seminarian education and training; and most importantly, brings Christ s Good News to the people of the Archdicoese. Our own parish also benefits by receiving a rebate from the appeal if it exceeds its goal. If you have not had a chance to make your pledge, you can fill out a pledge envelope available in the pews today and drop it in the collection basket or at the parish office/rectory. Thank you! SEPARATED/DIVORCED HEALING MINISTRY Saint Joseph s healing ministry for those who are separated or divorced welcomes newcomers. The group meets Monday evenings at 7:30 pm in the Jackson Room in the lower church. SHAWL MINISTRY MEETING FEBRUARY 13 Saint Joseph s Shawl Ministry will meet on Tuesday, February 13 from 2:00-4:00 pm in the Parish Life Center on Grove Street. All knitters & crocheters are welcome to join us in making shawls or bring your current yarn project and spend a relaxing afternoon with us. Our ministry has shawls available for those experiencing illness, confinement, bereavement, or other situation. All parishioners, especially those who feel a special closeness with the Blessed Mother, are encouraged to find out and take part in a special devotion called Total Consecration. The consecration is accomplished through a 33-day exercise of prayer (about 5-10 minutes per day) prior to the Marian Feast of the Annunciation on March 25. The preparation will begin on February 20.
