3 SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT ~ DECEMBER 6, 2015 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK But then, in all humility, Bernard added a crucially important consideration: Tuesday s Solemnity of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is the patronal feast for United States Catholics and a Holy Day of Obligation. (See our schedule of Masses for it on the bottom of this page.) The doctrine of the Immaculate Conception was solemnly defined by Pope Pius IX on December 8, It states that But what I have said is in submission to the judgment of whosoever is wiser than myself; and especially I refer the whole of it, as of all matters of a similar kind, to the authority and decision of the See of Rome, and I am prepared to modify my opinion if in anything I think otherwise than that See. The blessed Virgin Mary was preserved, in the first instant of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of God omnipotent and because of the merits of Jesus Christ the Savior of the human race, free from all stain of original sin. The Twelfth Century writer Eadmer of Canterbury, a Member of the Church household of St. Anselm and author of his biography, came up with a solution to this issue that eventually prevailed, writing of Mary: This teaching had long been the implicit general consensus of Church writers. But even some of Catholicism s most esteemed theologians had hesitations about it, mostly from a concern that redemption was a necessity for everyone who has ever lived. And so, St. Thomas Aquinas reasoned that But when I consider the eminence of God s grace in you, I find that in a truly remarkable way you were placed not among but above all other creatures; hence I conclude that in your conception you were not bound by the law of nature like others, but by the extraordinary power and operation of Divinity, in a way transcending human reason, you were preserved free from all taint of sin. If the Blessed Virgin had been sanctified in any way before her conception, she would not have incurred the stain of original sin and would thus not have needed redemption and salvation by Christ. The difficulty is that Christ would not be the Savior of all men, as is said in 1 Timothy 4. And so, it follows that the sanctification of the Blessed Virgin occurred after her conception. Since the proclamation of the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception, Eadmer s insight has typically been expressed in terms of an anticipated privilege Mary has enjoyed in view of the saving works her Son would carry out, making her, very suitably, the first to benefit from what Jesus would do for us all. St. Bernard of Clairvaux, a saint who had a deep devotion to Mary, also had his reservations: If before her conception she could not possibly be sanctified, since she did not exist, nor in the conception itself, because of the [original] sin which adhered in it, it remains to be believed that she received sanctification when existing in the womb after conception, which, by excluding sin, made her birth holy, but not her conception. Our Advent Penance service, with individual Confessions, will take place Monday evening, December 14 at 7:30. As part of the Archdiocese s New Energies initiative, our priests will be joined by the priests of St. Peter s in River Edge, meaning there will be five confessors present. (Next Lent, there will be a similar combined Penance Service at St. Peter s.) Msgr. 4 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ YEAR OF MERCY RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS THIS WEEKEND, DECEMBER 5-6 BEGINS DECEMBER 8 Read what Pope Francis has to say about the Jubilee Year of Mercy. Why a Jubilee of Mercy today? Simply because the church, in this time of great historical change, is called to offer more evident signs of God s presence and closeness. This is not the time to be distracted; on the contrary, we need to be vigilant and to reawaken in ourselves the capacity to see what is essential. This is a time for the church to rediscover the meaning of the mission entrusted to her by the Lord on the day of Easter: to be a sign and an instrument of the Father s mercy (cf. Jn 20:21-23). For this reason, the Holy Year must keep alive the desire to know how to welcome the numerous signs of the tenderness which God offers to the whole world and, above all, to those who suffer, who are alone and abandoned, without hope of being pardoned or feeling the Father s love. A Holy Year to experience strongly within ourselves the joy of having been found by Jesus, the Good Shepherd who has come in search of us because we were lost. A Jubilee to receive the warmth of his love when he bears us upon his shoulders and brings us back to the Father s house. A year in which to be touched by the Lord Jesus and to be transformed by his mercy, so that we may become witnesses to mercy. Here, then, is the reason for the Jubilee: because this is the time for mercy. It is the favorable time to heal wounds, a time not to be weary of meeting all those who are waiting to see and to touch with their hands the signs of the closeness of God, a time to offer everyone the way of forgiveness and reconciliation. December 7. GIVE FROM THE HEART You can share the blessings of Christmas with a person or family in need. Please take a tag from one of our Giving Trees (located at the main entrance or at the Harrison Street entrance of the church), purchase the requested gift, and then place the wrapped gift, with tag attached, under the tree the next time you come to Mass. The gifts from our parish s Giving Trees will go to Several Sources Shelter, Covenant House, St. Joseph Parish in Jersey City, and Catholic Charities. The tag you take from the tree is very important. It tells our office staff and the agencies we are helping for whom the gift is meant. It is extremely important that the tag you took from the Giving Tree be attached securely to the wrapped gift so that it will reach the correct person on Christmas. If you re unable to fulfill the gift request you took, don t worry, just return the tag to the Rectory. All Giving Tree Gifts need to be turned in no later than Sunday, December 14. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED A CHRISTMAS GIFT TO REMEMBER The Catholic Chaplaincy at Bergen Regional Medical Center, Paramus, needs volunteers to transport long-term residents to and from hospital Masses, to be friendly visitors to those confined to bed or wheelchairs, and to set up and take down altar items for hospital Masses on Saturdays (3:30 pm) and Sundays (11:15 am). If you are 18 years of age or older and wish to volunteer at one of these times (or more), please contact Fr. Edito Gamallo at or Fr. John Quill at for more information. God will reward you for your kindness. Looking for a special gift? Or a way to remember a loved one? Or something to record a special event (birth, Baptism, First Communion, Marriage) in the life of your family? A personalized engraved paver placed in our Commemorative Path (beside the church) or in our Garden of Saints (behind the parish office/rectory) may be just the answer. The donation for each brick is $125. Pick up an order form in the literature racks in the church or in the parish office/rectory and return it to 105 Harrison St., New Milford. 5 Thanks For Giving! YOUTH GROUP MEETING DECEMBER 13 We will once again meet at the Parish Life Center 268 Grove Street, Oradell from 5:00-7:00 pm next Sunday, December 13. We are planning to make prayer cards for the people of France. Come and join us as we show our support for the people of France and pray for peace in our world. All teens in grades 9-12 attending any high school are welcome to join us. Bring a friend! MEN S CORNERSTONE MEETING DECEMBER 9 Our next Men s Cornerstone meeting will be on Wednesday, DECEMBER 9, at 8:00 pm in the Parish Life Center (268 Grove Street, Oradell, behind the lower school). All men in the parish who have made Cornerstone are invited to attend this monthly meeting to enjoy great camaraderie, spiritual renewal, and to plan for our next Cornerstone Retreat. SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT ~ DECEMBER 6, 2015 THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE THE BEST EVER! Through your wonderful generosity and compassion our Thanksgiving Food Drive was one of the most successful we have ever had here at Saint Joseph! Psalm 107: 8, 9 says Let us give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men, for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. Last week that psalm was fulfilled through you! You donated hundreds of bags of groceries, 33 turkeys and $1, in monetary donations (which is the most we have ever collected during a food drive!). We actually could not fit everything in the vehicles that were sent to pick up your donations. During this special time of the year you were a true blessing to so many in need of the food pantries at Ascension Church in New Milford and St. Joseph in Jersey City (our brother/sister Parish). A special thank you to Brendan Walsh who made an extra trip to the Ascension Pantry to deliver the over flow. God bless you all! PILGRIMAGE TO HOLY LAND CANCELED Due to current travel advisories, Fr. Roy has announced that his Pilgrimage-Retreat to the Holy Land scheduled for January 12-22, 2016 has been canceled. 5 THE STAINED GLASS WINDOWS OF MARY S CHAPEL The four beautiful Marian windows (see our bulletin cover) that adorn Mary s Chapel in the lower church and that gave the chapel its name were not always there. It wasn t until 1999 that Fr. Peter Palmisano, then parochial vicar of Saint Joseph (now pastor of Our Lady of Mt. Virgin in Garfield), employed the services of the liturgical design firm Ecclesia and Clifton Architectural Glass and Metal to create and install them. IN LOVING MEMORY The windows were a gift to Saint Joseph Church from the children of George and Mary Catherine Hoff, donated in memory of their parents long time parishioners of Saint Joseph who died in 1997 and 1998 respectively. George Edward Hoff was born in Waukegan, IL in He held degrees in chemical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology and in business from Harvard Business School. As a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during WWII he served as a torpedo officer in the Pacific Theatre. According to the NY Times, he began his career with CPC (Corn Products) International, one of America s largest food companies, in 1947 and rose to be president of the Worldwide Corn Wet Milling Division. George married Mary Catherine Tuomey in Mary Catherine s obituary indicates that she was a talented writer and speaker and valedictorian of her class at Mundelein College in Chicago. She was a policy representative of the American Library Association and a certified teacher in both Illinois and New Jersey. According to the Chicago Tribune, she co-founded an organization called Peace in Ireland that brought Catholic and Protestant children from Ireland each summer to the United States. Together, George and Mary Catherine raised seven children three daughters and four sons. (A fifth son died in 1965 as a result of cerebral palsy.) When in 1968, CPC transferred Mr. Hoff to its headquarters in Englewood Cliffs, NJ, the family took up residence in Oradell. Three of the Hoff children graduated from Saint Joseph School (the older ones from Catholic schools in Chicago). All three daughters were married from Saint Joseph Church. Mr. and Mrs. Hoff were active in Saint Joseph for almost thirty years, Mrs. Hoff as a Eucharistic Minister and as a member of the hospital ministry from 1978 until her passing. In 1993, when Mrs. Hoff was filling out a parish survey, she had this to say about Saint Joseph, I have received enormous spiritual strength through St. Joseph s Parish. We [my husband and I] have been blessed to be parishioners. And we as a parish were blessed to have the Hoffs in our Saint Joseph family. Their strong faith is recognized and remembered in our beautiful Marian windows. Diane Hellriegel
