Join us for a great time and some great food on Saturday, February 24 from 6-9:30 pm. Proceeds will go to the repair and maintenance of our church. Tickets are only $45/person (BYOB). 3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK St. Mark s Gospel often expresses itself in concise terms, as it does in this Sunday s selection (Mk 1, 12-15), where the temptations Jesus faced in the wilderness are mentioned only briefly in contrast to the much greater detail about them found in Mt 4, 1-11 and Lk 4, If Jesus was tempted, all of us know well that we too have to face this challenge. Although temptation sometimes leads us into sin, temptation and sin are actually far apart from each other, since no number of temptations, even if they bother us repeatedly and severely, inflict sin s damage on us. Only a willful acceptance of temptations can do that. St. Alphonsus Liguori ( ), the founder of the Redemptorist order, one of the Doctors (key teachers) of the Church and the patron saint of moral theologians, should be expected to tell us something worth listening to about temptation, and indeed he does. Asking why God allows us to be tempted, St. Alphonsus indentifies three reasons why such trials can ultimately benefit us. Temptation, he says, reminds us of our need for God s grace, encourages us to focus our attention on the eternal things, and gives us the opportunity of furthering our human growth....the Lord sometimes permits that souls, which are dear to him, should be tempted with some violence, in order that they may better understand their own weaknesses, and the necessity of grace to prevent them from falling ; God permits us to be tempted, that we may be more detached from the things of earth, and conceive a more ardent desire to behold him in heaven ; God also permits us to be tempted, in order to increase our merits. St. Alphonsus offers solidly helpful advice about what we should do when we suffer temptations: When it is disturbed by temptation and sees itself in danger of committing sin, the soul has recourse to the Lord and to his Mother; it renews its determination to die rather than offend God; it humbles itself and takes refuge in the arms of divine mercy. By this means, as is proved by experience, it acquires more strength and is united more closely to God. The saints are not just holy, but are also dependably helpful to us, as we wish our friends to be. FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT ~ FEBRUARY 18, 2018 Msgr. SEVERAL SOURCES SHELTERS NEXT WEEKEND (FEB ) Several Sources Shelters has four (4) prolife shelters for mothers who seek to give God s blessed gift of life to their children rather than sacrifice them through abortion. They will ask Saint Joseph s parishioners for assistance next weekend, February A representative from Several Sources will speak at the Masses. We can help save the life of a child. 4 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ A SPECIAL VISIT THIS WEEKEND A representative from ASCPG (American Special Chidlren s Pilgrimage Group), a non-profit organization that sponsors an annual Easter Week pilgrimage to Lourdes for children and young adults with special physical needs, will speak at all Masses at Saint Joseph THIS WEEKEND. They will also be selling raffle tickets at the doors of the church after all Masses to help sponsor their work. We hope you will support this worthy cause LENTEN REGULATIONS For information on the laws of fasting and abstinence during Lent, go to our parish website at sjcnj.org Click on Parish Activities and then click on Lent Begins. Our annual Cornerstone Retreat (one for women March 2-3; one for men March 23-24) takes place in Saint Joseph lower school and begins on Friday evening at 7:00 pm. Your overnight stay, all meals (lovingly prepared!) and plenty of snacks will be provided throughout the 26 hours. The weekend activities will help you to affirm your own gifts and discover how you can use these gifts for the good of others. It is a fun way for church members to get to know one another and build lasting bonds of trust and support. There are short presentations followed by small group discussions, quiet personal time, and Reconciliation. There is also time for fun and relaxation! The weekend concludes with a Family Mass t 8:00 pm on Saturday evening. Family and friends are invited to attend. This is a weekend of great surprises, prepared especially for YOU! Every team member is dedicated to ensuring an atmosphere of warmth and hospitality. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God. MARK 1:14 Do you ever think about how difficult it must have been for Jesus to come into Galilee, knowing that John had just been arrested for teaching the same message that Jesus was proclaiming. It must have taken great love and trust for Jesus to do what the Father had sent Him here on earth to do. In the same way, following a life of stewardship takes great love and trust from us. We must be willing to surrender to God, trusting that God will always give us all that we need to fulfill His plan for us. The consecration is accomplished through a 33-day exercise of prayer (about 5-10 minutes per day) prior to the Marian Feast of the Annunciation on March 25. The preparation will begin on February 20.
