MARK 9:35 Jesus teaches us that we are called to serve one another. Sacrifice is not a word that many people like to hear. We think it means that we must give up something that we want. However, the literal meaning of sacrifice is to make holy, from the words sacer =sacred and facere =to make. In other words, we make our lives holy by sharing our gifts in the service of God. 3 TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ SEPTEMBER 20, 2015 One of St. John Paul II s earliest writings after becoming pope was his beautiful and heartfelt Apostolic ExhortationCatechesi Tradendae (1979), which I am reminded of as our parish s religious education programs open this Sunday under the supervision of our Director of Religious Education Deacon George Montalvo and our Coordinator of Sacramental Education Arlene Kennedy. These programs continue a concern personally voiced by Jesus in his last recorded words in St. Matthew s Gospel, in which he commands his apostles to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you (Mt. 28, 19-20). When someone speaks to valued friends for the last time, he hopes to say things he regards as crucial, ones he wants remembered without fail. The Lord s words were ones we have to see as enormously important. As John Paul II says, The Church has always considered catechesis one of her primary tasks. The term catechesis, deriving from a Greek word meaning echo, refers to instruction about Christ and his work that is faithfully handed down so that we may not only learn the truth about him but may also draw close to him. John Paul reminds us that at the heart of catechesis we find a Person, the Person of Jesus of Nazareth and that Christian living consists in following Christ, meaning that The definitive aim of catechesis is to put people not only in touch but in communion, in intimacy, with Jesus Christ [because] only He can lead us to the love of the Father in the Spirit and make us share in the life of the Holy Trinity. FROM THE PASTOR S DESK (continued above) John Paul insisted that catechesis is both a sacred duty and an inalienable right. The duty is the Church s and the right to receive sound instruction in the faith belongs to every baptized person. Every Christian s faith involves saying yes to Jesus Christ, John Paul wrote but let us remember that this yes has two levels: it consists in surrendering to the word of God and relying on it, but it also means, at a later stage, endeavoring to know better and better the profound meaning of this word. It is, of course, one of the chief responsibilities of parents to pass on their faith in Christ to their children. This is of absolutely central importance. Diligent parents want their children to have an excellent education and are willing to spend a great deal of money and effort to see that they get it. But no education is more important than the kind that joins children strongly to Jesus Christ. And no parental example affects children as strongly as lived faith: regular participation at Mass, a shared life of prayer and a sound formation in virtue. Such an important obligation can t just be delegated. That said, I will conclude by sharing with you St. John Paul s words of praise and gratitude for those who devote themselves to our children s well-being by being volunteer catechists: I am anxious to give thanks in the Church s name to all of you who are devoting yourselves to the religious education of many generations. Your work is often hidden but it is carried out with ardent and generous zeal, and it is an eminent form of the lay apostolate, a form that is particularly important where for various reasons children and young people do not receive suitable religious training in the home. According to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops website (usccb.org), Pope Francis will be the fourth pope to visit the United States. [The others were Pope Benedict XVI in 2008; Pope John Paul II in 1979, 1981, 1984, 1987, 1993, 1995, and 1999; and Pope Paul VI who became the first pope to visit our country in October of 1965.] Pope Francis apostolic journey to the U.S. is scheduled to take place September 22-27, 2015 and he will visit Washington, New York and Philadelpia [in addition to a stop in Cuba]. 7 TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ SEPTEMBER 20, 2015 CATECHETICAL SUNDAY Each year, the Catholic Church in the United States designates the third Sunday in September as Catechetical Sunday a day on which to celebrate and pray for the Church s mission to teach the Gospel to all people. Saint Joseph Parish is most grateful to all those who have responded to the call to share their gift of faith withour young people. Because of them, we are able to offer faith formation classes and Sacrament preparation programs to more than 700 students from kindergarten through Grade 9. In addition to our Religious Education classes and Sacrament programs, Saint Joseph offers an extensive Bible Study Program ( bible@sjcnj.org for more info); and the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA), a formal DEACON GEORGE MONTALVO is Saint Joseph s Director of Religious Education. MRS. ARLENE KENNEDY is Coordinator of Sacrament Preparation (First Reconciliation, First Eucharist and Confirmation). A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO OUR CATECHISTS My Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, The Catholic Church in the United States invites us, as it does each year at this time, to focus attention on the Catechetical Ministry as we celebrate Catechetical Sunday 2015, this year on Sunday, September 20th. As we celebrate in each of our parishes, those who serve as catechists in our parish faith formation programs, in our Catholic Schools and in our youth ministry programs, adult catechetical programs and in the RCIA will be called forth to be commissioned for their very important ministries for the life of our parishes. At the same time, we need to recall that the task of catechesis belongs also to parents in a very special way as they nurture their children but also to grandparents as they share their faith with their grandchildren. Indeed, this task belongs to all of us because of the call we have all received at Baptism to proclaim the Gospel by the way in which we live and by the choices that we make. 9 TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ SEPTEMBER 20, 2015 RIGHT TO LIFE BABY SHOWER Saint Joseph Parish is collecting baby items such as: diapers, (especially sizes 4, 5 and 6), baby wipes, baby wash, ointment, Q-tips, and toddler outfits to be delivered to a New Hope shelter in Englewood. There are collection boxes at the doors of the church and at the lower school. Please leave your donations in the boxes by October 15. The items will be assembled, packed and delivered on our Parish Day of Service (Saturday, October 17). SAINT JOSEPH SOCIAL CONCERNS MEETING OCTOBER 1 All are welcome to the Saint Joseph Social Concerns Committee meeting Thursday, October 1. We will meet in the Saint Joseph Lower School Library at 7:30pm. We will discuss events already planned and welcome new ideas. Please join us. All are welcome! HONORING OUR LADY A LIVING ROSARY OCTOBER 7 The Church dedicates the month of October to the Holy Rosary. Here at Saint Joseph Parish, we will have a special LIVING ROSARY on Wednesday, October 7, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, at 7:30 pm in the Upper Church. All parishioners, both young and old, are invited to participate as a 'bead' on the Living Rosary. WALK-IN DINNER PROGRAM FOR THE HUNGRY OCTOBER 6 Would you like to help feed the hungry? You will have an opportunity to do just that on Tuesday, October 6. Parishioners of Saint Joseph Parish will be preparing and serving a meatloaf dinner for approximately 140 people in need at the Housing, Health & Human Services Center located at 120 South River St. in Hackensack. If you would like to help prepare or serve the dinner, your help will be sincerely appreciated. Are you or someone you know the parent of a young person with special needs? ASCPG will be having a short presentation in the school gymnasium at St. Therese in Cresskill, NJ on September 20 immediately following the Special Needs Mass at 2:30 pm.
