THE WEDDING AT CANA The second of our three new original stained glass windows that celebrate moments in the life of our Blessed Mother has now been installed in Mary s Chapel by artist Andrzej Praszczyk. Each window has been made possible because of the generosity of certain parishioners and will be dedicated as such with special plaques. 2

3 NATIVITY OF JOHN THE BAPTIST ~ JUNE 24, 2018 FRATERNAL CORRECTION: Shouldn t We Avoid Offending People? Fraternal correction sounds so nice but it seems as though nobody appreciates it or is grateful for it. Is it proper then for us to offend other people by talking about good and evil? On the other hand, how do we respond to a person who tells us that we are sinning? St. Augustine says that, you become worse than the sinner if you fail to correct your brother or sister, including our children. Fraternal correction is a matter of precept and not just a concept. We share the sinner s guilt if we fail to speak. Fear for our own comfort and worry about human respect, political correctness are no excuse for silence. On the other hand, we are not commanded to be bull-headed, stupid, obtuse, pesty, or self-righteous. Timing is important, and forbearance is a virtue too when needed. Fear of offending the sinners when we speak to correct them is a legitimate fear, especially if we know the person will not pay attention to it. However, fear of sin must triumph over fear of emotional pain. In our modern world, the sins that are most commonly approved of are sexual. Even among Catholics who have never been taught the truth, they do not believe that contraception, fornication, adultery, and all unnatural sexual acts that do not lead to the creation of life are even sins at all. They do not know that it is not just the Church s opinion or ideology, but God himself who forbids them. These situations need more fraternal correction than in the past. There are times that our fraternal corrections are met more with anger and the breaking of friendships, rather than in the correction of these sins. (continued above) Since the admonition which is given in fraternal correction is directed to the removal of a brother's, sister s or child s sin, this admonition is chiefly an act of charity, and secondarily, an act of prudence. Fraternal correction is not opposed to patience with the weak, on the contrary it results from it. St. Thomas Aquinas tells us that, we can endure with a sinner in so far as we are not disturbed against the person and retain our goodwill towards that person, the result that we strive to make the person do better (Summa Theologiae, II-II, 33,1). If we neglect fraternal correction, we might be making the sinner worse. If it seems that the sinning person will not take the warning and will become worse, such fraternal correction should be relinquished. When a fraternal correction is not serving its purpose, that is, the amendment of our sinning brother or sister (or children), it is no longer good (ST., II-II, 33, 6). Just like Saint John the Baptist, have courage! Do not be afraid to give fraternal correction to our sinning brothers, sisters and children. They may hate us today and thank us tomorrow for correcting them. Or they may thank us today but hate us tomorrow for not correcting them! We humbly give fraternal and amicable correction not for our own comfort, our convenience or that of our neighbor, but for our neighbor s true good: both temporal and eternal. Most of us escape and find relief from the extreme heat in air conditioned surroundings. We are most fortunate. There are those whose financial circumstances prohibit such a luxury as air conditioning. Catholic Charities strives on a daily basis to relieve suffering.
