3 TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ SEPTEMBER 27, 2015 Angels are prominent in this week s Masses, since Tuesday is the feast of the Archangels and Friday honors the Guardian Angels. God s revealed truth is needed to establish their existence with certainty. In its teachings over the passing centuries, the Church has affirmed their existence numerous times, and the Scriptures contain many passages in which they play important roles. Michael Schmaus, a prominent lay theologian of modern times, has said that our certainty about the existence of the angels basically comes to us from Christ, who spoke of them on many occasions, as the Gospels clearly show. The late Jesuit Fr. John Hardon has the clearest definition of an angel I have come across: An angel is a purely spiritual, created substance, who exists as an individual person with mind and will but, unlike man, has no bodily parts that can be perceived by the senses. St. Thomas Aquinas, usually regarded as the most important theologian after biblical times, wrote that the Angels are intellectual natures, at the peak of creation. Several centuries before him, St. Isidore of Seville, author of a famous 20-volume encyclopedia on classical and Christian culture, pointed out that the word angel is the name of a function, not of a nature. For they are always spirits, but are called angels when they are sent. Having no bodily component, angels cannot be classified in species, strictly speaking. (In other words, each is a species of its own.) And yet the Bible speaks of angelic categories (see Col 1, 16; 2, 15). By the time St. Ambrose, who lived until near the end of the 4th century, tradition had identified nine choirs of angels by amalgamating various biblical passages, a grouping St. Gregory the Great (7th century) also later recognized. (continued above) FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Archangels have acquired their prefix because they delivered messages of the greatest importance. Scripture assigns names to three of them: Raphael (meaning God s remedy ), Michael ( Who is like God? ) and Gabriel ( God s strength ). We meet Raphael in the OT book of Tobit, where he guides the young man Tobias on a dangerous journey, frees his fiance e from demonic possession and cures the blindness of Tobias s father, Tobit. Michael, who is mentioned in both OT and NT, guards his people (Dn12, 1; Rv 12, 7) and beholds a vision of countless angels (Dn 7, 10). Gabriel, the most familiar of the three, foretells the birth of John the Baptist, communicates the Annunciation to Mary, and is usually regarded as the angel who guides Joseph about Mary s pregnancy and the need to flee to Egypt to protect the Holy Family from the menace of Herod. (See Lk 1, 19 ff; 1, 26 ff; cf. Mt 1, 18 ff; 2, 13 ff.) Angels also rejoice at the birth of Jesus (Lk 2, 14), care for him after he is tempted (Mt 4, 11), are at his disposal in twelve-legion strength during his sufferings in Gethsemane (Mt 26, 53) and will help him carry out the Last Judgment (Mt 25, 31 ff). The Church has long held that all of us have guardian angels to watch over us. As St. Thomas Aquinas writes, they are our guardians, who free us when hindered and help to bring us home. In one of his warmest sayings, Jesus, after telling us that we are to be like one of the children he held in his arms, says: Study for the Angel in the Virgin of the Rocks by Leonardo da Vinci (1480s) See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly father (Mt. 18, 10). You will have an opportunity to do just that on Tuesday, October 6. Parishioners of Saint Joseph Parish will be preparing and serving a meatloaf dinner for approximately 140 people in need at the Housing, Health & Human Services Center located at 120 South River St. in Hackensack. If you would like to help prepare or serve the dinner, your help will be sincerely appreciated. The Day of Service is a wonderful opportunity for all adults, youth and families in our parish to come together to serve our community in the true spirit of our Lord. We invite you all to participate. There is something for everyone. This year, the Day of Service will consist of two sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. You can sign up for one project all day or a different project for the morning and for the afternoon. Whether you are going to participate in the morning or the afternoon, all are invited to the luncheon. CLOTHING COLLECTION One of the many Day of Service projects on October 17 is to sort and package clothing for children in need. In advance we welcome donations of new or gently used pajamas, sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves, winter jackets and costs, leggings, pants, shows, socks, boots and shirts, in all sizes from babies and toddlers to teens. The clothing will be sorted and packaged for distribution to the orphanages of Ukraine. Clothing donations can be brought to the Rectory garage BEFORE or AFTER MASSES on October 3-4 and again on October So start cleaning out your closets! KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS BREAKFAST OPEN HOUSE OCTOBER 4 St. Joseph Council #3814 Knights of Columbus will be conducting a Recruitment Event with a Continental Breakfast Open House after all Masses on Sunday, October 4 at the K of C Hall at 199 River Road, New Milford. Prospective members and their families are invited, as well as members wishing to reconnect with the Council. For those unable to attend, prospect cards will be provided at the doors of the church that weekend. They can be filled out and dropped in a basket that will be located near the entrance. The breakfast is FREE. RIGHT TO LIFE BABY SHOWER Saint Joseph Parish is collecting baby items such as: diapers, (especially sizes 4, 5 and 6),baby wipes, babywash, ointment, Q-tips, and new toddler outfits to be delivered to a New Hope shelter in Englewood. There are collection boxes at the doors of the church and at the lower school. Please leave your donations in the boxes by October 11. The items will be assembled, packed and delivered on our Parish Day of Service (October 17). The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic men s fraternal and charitable organization with over 1.8 million members worldwide. Members must be practicing Catholic men age 18 and above.
