2 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ WITH OUR LOVE AND PRAYERS, FATHER ANDREW Saint Joseph 0 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH 2017 CHRISTMAS SCHEDULE parishioners gathered after all Masses this past weekend to thank FatherAndrew Park for his five and a half years of dedicated service to Saint Joseph Parish. Despite the snow, several hundred parishioners came to the receptions to offer their best wishes, while scores of our Confirmation candidates also stopped by to tell Fr. Andrew how much he meant to them. Cardinal Tobin has appointed Father Andrew the new Parish Administrator (pastor) of The Church of the Korean Martyrs in Saddle Brook, NJ. He will begin his new appointment on January 1st. Fr. Andrew will be here at Saint Joseph through Christmas. If you see him, be sure to give him your good wishes before he sets out to begin the next chapter in his vocation. We ask God to grant Fr. Andrew the wisdom, understanding and strength he will need. 3 THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT ~ DECEMBER 17, 2017 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK The Liturgy of the Hours is the Church s official daily prayer book, obligatory for priests and religious, and strongly recommended for all Catholics. Its content is largely scriptural, but also has other prayers and passages from the Church s great writings, most by saints but many from other valued sources as well. Evening Prayer each day includes Mary s famous Magnificat (Lk 1, 46-55), which is introduced and concluded by a short antiphon. From Dec these antiphons express our joyous anticipation of Christmas, now so near. Called the O Antiphons (because each begins with O ), they have been used since at least the eighth century. They call our attention to the coming of the Messiah and describe his mission with images drawn mostly from the wisdom and prophetic books of the Old Testament. Many of their themes appear in the familiar Advent hymn O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. These antiphons (and some of the biblical references associated with them) are: O Wisdom: O Wisdom, O holy Word of God, you govern all creation with your strong yet tender care. Come and show your people the way to salvation. (See Wis 9, 1-6; 1 Co 1, 24.) O Adonai: O sacred Lord of ancient Israel, who showed yourself to Moses in the burning bush, who gave him the holy law on Sinai mountain: come stretch out your mighty hand to set us free. (See Ex 3, 1-6.) (continued above) O Root of Jesse: O Flower of Jesse s stem, you have been raised up as a sign for all peoples; kings stand silent in your presence; the nations bow down in worship before you. Come, let nothing keep you from coming to our aid. (See Is 11, 1-5; Jn 15, 1-4.) O Key of David: O Key of David, O royal Power of Israel controlling at your will the gate of heaven: come, break down the prison walls of death for those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death; and lead your captive people into freedom. (See Is 22, 22-24; Rv 3, 7.) O Rising Sun: O Radiant Dawn, splendor of eternal light, sun of justice: come, shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death. (See Lk 1, 7879; Jn 8, 12; Heb 1, 1-4.) O King of the Nations: O King of all the nations, the only joy of every human heart; O keystone of the mighty arch of man, come and save the creature you fashioned from the dust. (See Ezek 37, 21-28; Is 26, 8-9.) O Emmanuel: O Emmanuel, king and lawgiver, desire of the nations, Savior of all people, come and set us free, Lord our God. (See Is 7, 10-14; Jn 1, 118.) This year it will feature Saint Joseph Church's extremely talented Adult and Children's Choirs, Cantors and instrumentalists in a wide variety of holiday music. selections will include classical music by Handel and Bach, popular songs by Stevie Wonder, Irving Berlin and Harry Belafonte and an original piece by our very own Director of Music, Monroe Quinn. There is NO admission charge and the entire family is welcome. Rejoice always means place your trust in God; He will provide all that you need. Pray constantly means prayer should be a running conversation with God throughout the whole day, every day. Give thanks in all circumstances means even in bad situations, thank God. Suffering a little bit helps build empathy for others in similar situations.
