2 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ CONGRATULATIONS SJS GRADUATES 2 Three graduating eighth graders from Saint Joseph School, who exemplify the K of C commitment to service to church, school and community, were awarded scholarships at the Annual Community Awards Night. First place winner Declan Haney received a $1,000 scholarship; Valeria Pernicone and Eamon Bednarcik each received $500. The scholarships were based on leadership, scholastic honors, school activities and a personal essay. 3 THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JULY 2, 2017 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK On June 27, 1863, the Union Army stopped at Emmitsburg, Maryland, where the Sisters of Charity operated St. Joseph s Academy on the property their foundress, St. Elizabeth Seton, had acquired some years before, which is now the location of the basilica and shrine named for her. The troops stayed there three days before moving on to a small Pennsylvania town a few miles away: Gettysburg, where the greatest battle of the Civil War would be fought from July 1-3. From a nearby mountain, Catholic seminarians could see part of the battlefield action. Throughout the fighting, the sisters prayed continually in their chapel, where they could hear the dreadful sounds of the cannons. When the gunfire ceased, the sisters went to the battlefield to help care for the many wounded. One of them, Sister Matilda Coskery, described what she experienced: Houses burnt, dead bodies of both Armies strewn here and there, an immense number of slain horses, thousands of bayonets, sabers, wagons, wheels, projectiles of all dimensions, blankets, caps, clothing of every color covered the woods and fields. We were compelled to drive very cautiously to avoid passing over the dead. Our terrified horses drew back or darted forward reeling from one side to the other. The farther we advanced the more harrowing was the scene; we could not restrain our tears. When the sisters arrived at the battlefield, which by then was well-soaked with rain, they helped move the wounded to whatever houses, businesses and churches were available to care for them. For weeks the sisters traveled among 113 makeshift hospitals, helping soldiers of both sides. Nearly 300 Sisters of Charity served as Civil War nurses. They were just some of the thousands of Catholic nuns who did so in every theater of the war, gaining the respect of soldiers of the North and the South alike, whether they were Catholic or not. These sisters volunteered and did not work for pay. When Vicksburg, Mississippi, was under siege, sisters moved freely in and out of the city to care for the sick. One observer noted that Their religious habit was their certificate of honor and of service, and by order of those in authority in the two armies, no countersign was ever demanded from them. In hospitals where the sisters worked, death rates usually dropped dramatically. Mary Livermore, a non- Catholic who worked with the U.S. Sanitary Commission and was a harsh critic of the military medical operations of the time, wrote that If I ever felt prejudiced against Sisters as nurses, my experience during the war would have dissipated it entirely. The world has known no nobler and more heroic women than those found in the ranks of the Catholic Sisterhoods. President Lincoln, in an entry in his diary, wrote that Of all the forms of charity and benevolence seen in the crowded wards of the hospitals, those of the Catholic sisters were among the most efficient. I never knew whence they came or what was the name of their order. As they went from cot to cot, distributing medicine prescribed, or administering the cooling, strengthening draughts as directed, they were veritable angels of mercy. How oftentimes have I seen them exorcise pain by the presence of their words. A Union soldier named Jack Crawford, who had been helped by the sisters, paid them the following eloquent tribute: My friends, on all God s green and beautiful earth, there are no purer, no nobler, no more kind-hearted and self-sacrificing women than those who wear the somber garb of Catholic Sisters, their only recompense the sweet, soulsoothing consciousness that they were doing their duty. Oh! my friends, I am not a Catholic, but I stand ready anytime to defend these noble women with my life, for I owe that life to them. Msgr. Bouffard, 73, was ordained in He served as pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Haworth, NJ for many years and later at St. Peter the Apostle Parish in River Edge, NJ until retiring in He served as Executive Director of Priest Personnel and worked on the Catholic RENEW program in Australia.
