The diocesan ministries supported by the Appeal directly impact many of the parishioners here in St. Joseph Church. Your gift provides formation opportunities for our catechists, youth and young adults. Among other important ministries, your sacrificial gift supports our renewed efforts in Evangelization & Communication. If you have yet to make your pledge to this year s Bishop s Annual Appeal, you will have the opportunity to do so next weekend, March 16/17, which has been designated as Bishop s Annual Appeal In-Pew Weekend. Please prayerfully consider a gift to the Bishop s Annual Appeal to help our parish reach its goal. If we can exceed our goal, 50% of the amount collected over goal will be returned to us in the form of a parish rebate. Just as important as our financial goal is our goal of reaching 100% participation. Every gift, no matter the size, is important and greatly appreciated. Thank you. 3 READINGS First Reading - Deuteronomy 26:4-10 Second Reading - Romans 10:8-13 Gospel - Luke 4:1-13 ALMSGIVING, PRAYER, FASTING, AND TEMPTATION As we begin our season of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, the reading from Deuteronomy reminds us of our duty of almsgiving, that we set [our offerings] before the Lord, [our] God, [and] shall bow down in [God s] presence (Deuteronomy 26:10). The reading from Romans refers us to our prayer, reminding us that The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart... For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved (Romans 10:8, 13). These are comforting words, and encourage us to ask God for what we need and to aid us in our prayer. Finally, the Gospel of Luke shows us a fasting Jesus, who was tempted as we are, and who knows what it means to be human. Someone once said that temptation arises when you re tired and weary, and the devil comes along and makes a perfectly reasonable suggestion. Jesus shows us that, with his help, we too can overcome our temptations, reasonable as they may sound. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE WEEK MONDAY Lv 19:1-2, 11-18; Mt 25:31-46 TUESDAY Is 55:10-11; Mt 6:7-15 WEDNESDAY Jon 3:1-10; Lk 11:29-32 THURSDAY Est C:12, 14-16, 23-25; Mt 7:7-12 FRIDAY Ez 18:21-28; Mt 5:20-26 Dt 26:16-19; Mt 5:43-48 Gn 15:5-12, 17-18; Phil 3:17-4:1 or 3:20-4:1; Lk 9:28b-36 March 3, 2019 $5,710 $6,344 (2018) Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have; God is pleased by sacrifices of that kind. -Hebrews 13:16 PROTECT LIFE Father we see the light of day and live to give You glory through Christ our Lord. Amen. Pastor s Corner It is good to be writing to you at this time to express my thoughts and prayers. With all that has been happening in the Church, in the past and in the present, I just wanted to let you all know, I am on your side 100%. All injustices need to be rooted out of the Church. The unfaithfulness of a few, causes us all to suffer. I know that it has tested my faith to the nth degree. Yet I have come to realize, that it is something we all need healing from. As Christians, we are all called to do what is right in the eyes of God. And for those who do not, they need to be held accountable. From the local church to those in highest powers, the Church is no place for those who do not abide in Christ. I had been talking with the Servants of Mary a while back about this very thing and they looked at it this way, that the Church is going through a purging. How profound. And although difficult, in the end we will have a purer Church, one that is precious in the eyes of God. And I want you to know that I am thankful for your faithfulness and your presence in our parish. For our faith is based not always in what we see, but on the presence of Christ, who can be there for us whenever we turn to him. During LENT... Mass - Church Monday through Friday - Friday - Saturday - 8:30 AM Eucharistic Adoration Thursday 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM closing with Benediction Stations of the Cross Friday - FIRST OF LENT Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days, and then the devil tested him. Moses and the Israelites had been in the desert for forty years before being led to the land of milk and honey. There were times when they called out to God, sure that, as Saint Paul wrote to the Romans, everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. We sometimes spend time in the desert as well. Not a literal desert most of the time, but a desert in which it seems difficult to perceive God s presence, times when we face difficulty and are tempted to leave God s ways behind. On this First Sunday of Lent, Jesus shows us what to do in these moments: stand firm and trust in God. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

4 PRAY AND FAST FOR VOCATIONS Creator God, through Baptism You invite me to share the gift of my life in service to others. Be with me as I choose each day to show Your presence in our world. Give me the courage and generosity to respond to Your love, to Your call. I pray especially for those who serve You as priests, brothers, sisters, deacons, and lay ministers. Open the minds and hearts of many other men and women that they may accept Your challenge to build the Kingdom. Loving God, You have made me in Your image and likeness, and for this I shall praise You forever. Through Baptism You invite me to serve as Your Son Jesus served. I offer You this day all that I have and all that I am in union with His saving cross. Amen.
