E V E N I N G P R A Y E R Each Sunday of Lent we will celebrate Christian Prayer in song at 5:00 PM. C O N F E S S I O N S The Light Is On For You - Mondays of Lent from 5:30-6:30 PM. St. Ignatius and all the parishes in the Diocese of Scranton will be open for individual confessions beginning Monday, March 11th for five weeks. We will still hold our regular Saturday confessions. L E N T E N F A S T I N G R E G U L A T I O N S Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In addition, all Catholics 14 years old and older must abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and the Fridays of Lent. F A M I L I E S H E L P I N G F A M I L I E S - L E N T E N C A M P A I G N We are especially reminded of God s mercy during Lent. We can spread God s mercy by generous service to those in need. With that in mind, the religious education program s Lenten campaign, Families Helping Families will begin the first weekend of Lent. Please consider offering your change. Containers will be located in the foyer of the Church and Chapel beginning the first weekend of Lent. The proceeds of this campaign will be shared by St. Vincent De Paul Soup Kitchen and the Dinner 4 Kids program. Thank you for your continued generosity in advance. By Jean Petroski In Memory of Elizabeth Murphy By Family WEEKLY MEDITATION The readings today echo a very familiar theme. It s so easy to recognize flaws in others and pronounce judgment upon them, while it s much easier to avoid recognizing our own weaknesses and shortcomings. As we go through this week, let us take some time to reflect on our words and deeds. Do we follow Jesus teachings on forgiveness, mercy and love? Or do we, as Jesus reminds us, notice the splinter in our neighbor s eye but fail to see the wooden beam in our own? It is by following his example in all things mind, heart and actions which brings inner peace and hope and love to all. We encourage you to spend quiet time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament throughout the week with a special prayer intention in mind. Just pick up a card after your visit to Church and send it off to the one in your prayer. The cards may be used on First Fridays by those attending Eucharistic Adoration. Think gospel! Please make room for your neighbor in Church and slide to the center of the pew.

Tressler, and the entire parish, we would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Scott Edmunds for donating this year s Paschal Candle at St. Ignatius Church in memory of Guy and Norma Agati at the request of the Agati and Edmunds family. Your kindness and generosity is deeply appreciated. WORSHIP COMMISSION Saint of the Month Saint Elizabeth Face the altar and look to the left side of the Church. If you count four stained glass windows from the front, you will see the window honoring St. Elizabeth. Since the time of Jesus, a number of holy and significant women in have earned the title Saint Elizabeth: the mother of John the Baptist, Elizabeth of Hungary, Elizabeth of Portugal and Elizabeth Ann Seton. Elizabeth is a Hebrew name and means an oath to my God. Gospel writer Luke tells us that Elizabeth miraculously had a son, John, the Baptist even though she was an old woman who had been infertile. She was probably a cousin of Mary, mother of Jesus. When Elizabeth was expecting John, Mary paid her a surprise visit. Elizabeth greeted Mary warmly, proclaiming, Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Just like Mary. Elizabeth saw her first and only son become a renowned preacher and spiritual leader. Both John and Jesus endured a cruel death ordered by the rulers of the region. Saints Elizabeth of Hungary and Elizabeth of Portugal lived during the so-called Middle Ages. Both were born into royal families, were married as teenagers and had several children. These two women used their royal wealth and power to care for the poor and the sick despite fierce opposition from their families. Elizabeth Ann Seton was born in New York City two years before the American Revolution. She was born into a wealthy and influential family, married young and had five children. Her handsome and wealthy husband went bankrupt, developed tuberculosis and left her a penniless widow with many young children to raise. After his death she converted to the Roman Catholic Church which made her life more difficult due to anti-catholic bias of the time. After many struggles, she established a free school for poor children in Emmetsburg, Maryland, considered the first parish school in America. She also established the Sisters of Charity which carried on her work of education. She was canonized as the first Saint born in the United States in Each of these women achieved great sanctity while immersed in ordinary responsibilities and struggles. Is this our calling too? BUTCHER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD The Jeanne R. Butcher Memorial Scholarship Award was established by the family through an endowment with the Luzerne Foundation. The Applicant is a graduating senior and must be a registered parishioner of St. Ignatius Loyola Parish and planning to enroll as an undergraduate in an accredited two or four year college/university as a full-time student with demonstrated financial need. The student selected will receive the scholarship contingent upon the documented satisfactory academic and other related criteria used in the selection for the scholarship. The auction will be held in the Sheehy Farmer Center third floor. There is plenty of free parking on the campus grounds. In addition, we welcome any individuals who can help support the work of Mother Teresa s Haven on any of the scheduled nights from helping with kitchen prep, to serving, to sharing fellowship with our guests, to dishwashing and cleaning up.
