This powerful man - heir to the throne - displays humility and restraint when facing God. His request reveals inborn good judgment. Sunday Tithe $12, This Week s Expenses $37, FEAST OF SAINT IGNATIUS LOYOLA The parish will celebrate the Feast of Saint Ignatius Loyola on Sunday, July 27th at 7:00 PM with Evening Prayer. This continues our liturgical remembering of the three patronal saints of St. Ignatius Loyola Parish: Mary of the Annunciation, St. Hedwig, and St. Ignatius. During this service, the special prayer intentions which are listed in the book in the back of the Church will be remembered. All are invited to attend. WORSHIP GOALS OF THE FIVE YEAR PLAN The front of the bulletin reminds us that Without Sunday, We Cannot Live. Sunday Liturgy is the lifeline from God to our daily lives. As we reflect on the many aspects of worship in our parish, we see that Goal 1 is to enhance the feeling of welcome to our church. This involves those sitting in the pews as well as ministers at the doors. Worship is not something done for an audience but involves all present in some way as stated in Goal 2. In Goal 3, we will seek ways to bring the Sunday message to our daily lives. We live because we celebrate Sunday. VBS NEWS Come join us as we step onto the Gangway to Galilee! Through songs, games, crafts, snacks and Bible stories, we will come to learn that by grace we have been saved. When: Monday, August 4th - Friday, August 8th. Time: 9:30 AM - Noon. Ages: Those who have completed one year of pre-school through those who have completed Grade 5. Fee: $10.00 per child. GRANDMA S ATTIC - JULY 31, AUGUST 1 & 2 Don t forget to drop off your donations at Conlan Hall on Monday, July 28th from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 5:30 to 7:30 PM and Tuesday, July 29th from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Please do not include any clothing, bedding or furniture in your donations. Household items of all kinds including dishes, books, CD s games, small appliances, jewelry and more will be gratefully accepted. Our sale begins in Conlan Hall on Thursday, July 31st from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM; Friday, August 1st from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM and Saturday, August 2nd (Bag Day) from 8:00 AM to Noon. On behalf of our parish family, we would like to thank Madeleine Wood for her dedication and commitment to our cantor program for the past six years. Madeline will be leaving to begin her freshman year at Temple University the end of August. We offer her our sincere gratitude for sharing her beautiful musical gift with us. We wish her many blessings as she pursues her college career. We also want to thank and extend our appreciation to our remaining cantors for their many years of service and dedication to this program. Once again, we at St. Ignatius Loyola have been and continue to be blessed. STUDYING THE LITURGY - CHASUBLE The outer garment worn by the presiding priest or bishop at Mass is the chasuble. It derives from the serviceable poncho-like cloak that was the regular overcoat of the Greeks and Romans. The word comes from the Latin casula which means little house, and indeed, the chasuble is meant to symbolize the sheltering embrace of the Christian life. Catholics of a certain age will remember the abbreviated Roman style chasuble of the pre-vatican II church. Though still available in some church goods catalogues, this fiddle-shaped stiff garment has been thankfully replaced by the flowing and graceful style we see on our presiders today. Don t forget! 4 Page 4 J U L Y 2 7, BENEFIT FOR THE IHM RETIREMENT FUND In honor of the IHM Sisters, the Sisters of the IHM Foundation is hosting a special event on August 9th to benefit the IHM Retirement Fund, IHM Sisters Celebration: Remembering Our Past, Celebrating Our Present, Planning Our Future. The IHM Celebration will be held on the Marywood University campus. The program will begin at 6:30 PM with cocktails and include a dinner reception followed by a program. Monsignor Joseph G. Quinn will be the Master of Ceremonies and P.J. Carlesimo, who was formerly taught by IHM sisters at the Chapel School Scranton, will be the guest speaker. Reservations are $ per person. VINCENT DE PAUL SOUP KITCHEN St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen, 39 East Jackson Street, Wilkes-Barre is now taking donations of school supplies. Items being collected are: backpacks, notebooks, binders, paper, pens, pencils, markers, erasers, glue sticks and crayons. Items will be collected up until August 11th. CHESS CAMP Attention students in grades 2 through 8, The Regal Rooks Chess Club will host a Chess Camp from August 4-8 in the in the cafeteria of the SS. Peter and Paul School, Plains. Meetings will take place from 9:00 AM - 11:30 AM. You don t need to know how to play chess; we will teach you all of the basics and even strategy and tactics. Prayer Cards We encourage you to spend quiet time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament throughout the week with a special prayer intention in mind.
