THE FIRST MOMENT OF THE TRIDUUM The primary sign of the Mass of the Lord s Supper is the washing of feet. When Jesus washed the feet of the disciples he didn t look up. Whether the feet were Peter s or John s or Judas, he didn't want to know. He just wanted everyone to know that his love went out to them all, whether they were saints or sinners. He didn t want to see whether the face was beautiful or ugly, whether the face had virtue or vice written on it, whether the face was white or red or yellow or black, whether the face was a man s or a woman s; he loved them all. John s Gospel account of the Last Supper, which is always the Gospel of this first moment of the Triduum, doesn t give us the story of Jesus blessing and sharing the bread and wine. John tells us instead of this foot-washing action of Jesus universal love. And this is what we are commanded to commemorate; this is the Church that we invite our candidates to join. Lent ends as we move into our paschal fast! THURSDAY 7:00 PM EVENING MASS OF THE LORD S SUPPER Welcoming the Easter Triduum Liturgy of the Word Washing of the Feet Liturgy of the Eucharist Rice Bowl Collection Procession to Reservation Chapel & Adoration The Paschal fast begins Night Prayer 10:00 PM

THE SECOND MOMENT OF THE TRIDUUM Pain, sacrifice and inconvenience are today viewed as experiences of no value, which are to be avoided. So we choose addictions, divorce and physician-assisted suicide to achieve the quality of life we prefer. But in a life marked by the DNA of original sin, Jesus calls us to own life s pain and grow through life s pain. The primary sign of the Good Friday liturgy is Jesus passion and death on the cross, a passion and death which makes it possible for us to live with God s love. By reverencing the cross of Christ we reverence all crosses of our lives. Crosses which teach us conscience and commitment and generosity and faithfulness. As we focus on the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ and venerate the Cross, we bring to this liturgy those persons who seem hard to love and those commitments which seem hard to remain faithful to. Morning Prayer - 9:30 AM FRIDAY 12:10 PM COMMEMORATION OF THE LORD S PASSION AND DEATH Prostration in silence Liturgy of the Word The Solemn Intercessions Adoration of the Cross Collection for Holy Land Holy Communion Living Stations of The Cross at 7:00 PM (Good Shepherd School Community) The Church will close immediately after Stations.

THE THIRD MOMENT OF THE TRIDUUM As we celebrate symbols of our life in Christ during the Triduum, we wait for Christ to return again as He rose. That waiting becomes most intense in the third moment of the Triduum, the liturgy of the Easter Vigil. While we watch, we renew our faith by recalling God s mighty deeds as recorded in our Scriptures. And when Christ does not come in glory this year, we celebrate that we are not a people abandoned and despairing. Rather we are a people of vision and hope, a people with whom Jesus is constantly present in sacrament. Now that we have earlier celebrated the universal love of our Master and Lord, and the sacrificial cost of that love, we now enter sacramentally into Christ s dying and rising. When we have done all this and done this well, our Triduum comes to an end. We continue to keep watch in fasting and prayer at home with our families. Morning Prayer - 9:30 AM Blessing of Baskets - 3:00 PM in Conlan Hall SATURDAY 8:00 PM THE EASTER VIGIL Blessing of the fire Thanksgiving for the Light (Exsultet) Liturgy of the Word Blessing of the Water Reception Into Church Liturgy of the Eucharist EASTER SUNDAY - March 27, :00 AM & 8:30 AM EASTER MASS AT CHAPEL 10:30 AM & NOON EASTER MASS AT CHURCH

M E D I T A T I O N Forgiveness Throughout Luke s account of Christ s passion is the theme of forgiveness. It is good for us to hear these messages again with fresh ears. Consider that Jesus knows He will be handed over, He knows he will be betrayed by his number one apostle and despite this Jesus gives the bread of life - the Eucharist. Even while enduring the pain of crucifixion, Jesus begs the Father Forgive them, they know not what they do. Finally, as Jesus hangs dying a horrible death, a criminal taunts Him and a second criminal acknowledges the guilt they deservedly carry for their actions. Jesus assures this good thief that Today you will be with me in paradise. If Jesus can forgive executioners, thieves and defectors, there is great reason to believe Jesus will also forgive my sins - and yours. We can approach the sacrament of reconciliation confident that Jesus through the priest will extend the promise of paradise to each of us. PENANCE SERVICE Penance Service will be held tonight (Sunday) at 7:00 PM in the Church. This will be your last opportunity to go to Confession before Easter. PRACTICES FOR HOLY WEEK Holy Thursday will be on Wednesday, March 23rd at 6:30 PM in the Church. Good Friday will be on Friday, March 25th at 10:00 AM in the Church. Easter Vigil will on Saturday, March 26th at 10:00 AM in the Church. CHRISM MASS All the faithful of the Diocese are invited to attend the Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of Saint Peter, Scranton, on Tuesday, March 22nd at 4:00 PM. At this Mass priests from throughout the Diocese will renew their priestly promises before the Bishop, and the oils to be used for the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, Anointing of the Sick and Holy Orders will be blessed. Participation in the Chrism Mass is a beautiful way to pray for and support the priests of the Diocese. FLOWERS FOR HOMEBOUND Eucharistic Ministers serving the homebound and nursing homes are asked to pick up their flowers for Easter distribution after Masses this weekend in the Sacristy. 6 St. Ignatius Financial Status March 13, 2016 I take this opportunity to share with you the financial status of our parish. Since my arrival on June 29 th, I have met with our Finance Council at least once a month and when necessary, twice a month. We have come to understand that our weekly income does not meet our, weekly expenses. Our parish has 2.3 million in our Diocesan Accounts that include: Educational Endowments, Perpetual Care Accounts for our Cemeteries, a St. Vincent De Paul Account to care for the poor and a Building and Maintenance Account. The money in these accounts was created for specific projects or needs. This money can only be used for what it is intended for. The name of each account and the amount in each of these accounts is listed below. Our parish has the following accounts with the Diocese of Scranton: St. Ignatius Savings Account = $698, St. Ignatius Elementary Fund = $404, St. Ignatius Cemetery Account = $367, St. Ignatius Educational Fund = $594, St. Vincent de Paul Fund = $54, St. Hedwig Cemetery = $33, St. Mary Cemetery = $150, Since last summer, I was able to save money by cutting down on our expenses toward weekend clergy help. Currently, Fr. Alex and I are celebrating all of our weekend masses and hearing Confessions. In addition, with a heavy heart and after consulting with our Finance Council, Tony Butel, our Pastoral Associate will be leaving our staff as of April 3 rd. We do not have the income to sustain his salary. Tony understands our situation and is most accepting of what I need to do. I hope that you are able to join us at the 10:30 a.m. Mass on April 3 rd, and the light reception that will follow in Conlan Hall, to honor Tony s ministry at St. Ignatius. In the near future, I will come to you with a report on our income and expenses as well as, looking at developing an Increased Offertory Program. Once we see our income and how I have cut back on our expenses, we will also come to understand the need for an increased offertory program. As we know from paying our own bills, our utility expenses rise but, our income remains the same. I prefer to make you aware of the situation as it happens rather than, coming to you with a large amount of debt.

Moreover, I have developed a Building and Grounds Committee. This committee meets once a month and analyzes the building as well as, maintenance needs of our parish. We have developed a 3 year plan for upcoming projects that includes: In 2016, we are considering the following projects: St. Ignatius Church Roof & Gutter repairs. St. Ignatius Church Steeple needs to be repainted. Conlan Hall electrical panel box needs an update. Purchasing mats for St. Ignatius Church & St. Ann s Chapel. Currently we rent the mats. St. Ignatius Church Entrance Heaters in the Vestibule need to be replaced. In 2017, we are considering the following projects: St. Ignatius Rectory windows need to be replaced. Bergan Hall windows need to be replaced. St. Ignatius Church parking lot needs to be sealed. In 2018, we are considering the following project: St. Ignatius Church HVAC Units need to be replaced. In consultation with our Parish Council, I have asked a member of our Finance Council to join the Parish Council. As a result, the needs of our parish are being communicated on both a pastoral and financial level. Moreover, in the near future, I will develop a Liturgy Committee as well as, a Cemetery Committee. This will help us continue to build bridges, communicate better and assess our needs. As I shared with you when I arrived, I am honored to be your Pastor. My vision is to unite our parish at all levels, to empower those who have gifts and talents and to shed transparency on all aspects of our development. We will grow together and continue to build upon the beautiful leadership of our past. Finally, may we reflect on the words of Pope Francis who said, Let us ask ourselves: how do I follow Jesus? Jesus speaks in silence in the Mystery of the Eucharist. He reminds us every time that following him means going out of ourselves and not making our life a possession of our own but rather, a gift to Him and to others. Thank you for following Jesus and for making our parish a gift to me, to the stranger, to the poor and to one another. May God bless you for your love and dedication to our parish.
