1 THE CHURCH OF S AINT I GNATIUS L OYOLA WELCOME FATHER JOE MOSLEY Fr. Joe Mosley was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Scranton in He grew up in Mayfield, Pennsylvania, and this is where his family still resides. Before entering the seminary, Fr. Joe graduated from the University of Scranton and Arcadia University with degrees in Biology and Physician Assistant Studies. However, a call to the priesthood always resounded in his heart. He began formation for the priesthood in 2010 at Mount St. Mary s Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD where he studied Philosophy. He completed his courses in Theology at St. Mary s Seminary and University of Baltimore, MD. Most recently, Fr. Joe has been serving as the assistant pastor at St. Matthew s Parish in East Stroudsburg. It is with joy that we welcome Father Joseph Mosley to St. Ignatius Loyola Parish. May he have a long and happy stay. THANKSGIVING DINNER PLANNING MEETING The Service Coordinating Team is currently working to plan this year s Thanksgiving Dinner, the mission of which is to provide a Thanksgiving meal in Conlan Hall to members of the community who are in unique need of companionship and community during the holiday and to deliver meals to the homebound. A planning meeting open to all parishioners who wish to volunteer to support the Thanksgiving Dinner will be held on Wednesday, October 25th in Bergan Hall. In addition to affirming the mission of the dinner, the central goal of the planning meeting will be to clarify key tasks and responsibilities for the event (from work in the kitchen, to work in the hall, to deliveries). If you are interested in volunteering to support the Thanksgiving Dinner but cannot attend the planning meeting, please contact Tom Hamill ( ) or any member of the Service Coordinating Team. The Thanksgiving Dinner itself is scheduled for Sunday, November 19th from 1 to 3 PM in Conlan Hall. THANK YOU MOTHER TERESA S HAVEN We would like to thank the many parishioners who helped support Mother Teresa s Haven in September. We once again received an overwhelming and inspiring response from individuals and groups within the parish who reached out to sponsor meals, contribute desserts and other foods, put together snack and personal care packages, donate clothing and personal items, provide financial assistance, share fellowship with our guests, and volunteer time for kitchen prep and cleanup. We were particularly excited to see so many new volunteers become involved as sponsors during this recent visit and so many familiar faces of parishioners who always make time to support this vital ministry in a variety of ways. The men of Mother Teresa s Haven were once again profoundly grateful for the hospitality, the sense of community and belonging, and the delicious food they enjoyed as guests of our parish. Thank you for making service to Mother Teresa s Haven part of your spiritual journey at St. Ignatius. Please keep an eye out for future announcements regarding opportunities to support Mother Teresa s Haven in early 2018, and please encourage your friends to share in this ministry, as we are always happy to welcome new volunteers. Thank you again for all of your help and for all that you do for St. Ignatius! Sincerely, The Service Coordinating Team A ROMAN CATHOLIC C OMMUNITY INSPIRED BY THE TRADITION OF ST. IGNATIUS, S T. HEDWIG AND S T. MARY'S ANNUNCIATION PARISHES. W e, the blended Catholic community of St. Ignatius Loyola, draw strength from Word and Sacrament, especially in the celebration of the Eucharist. Modeling Christ s work, we embrace our commitment to God s call. We remain faithful to the shared acts of prayer, study and service. Together we extend Christ s hospitality to others and light the path of peace for generations to come. Knowing God is more important than knowing about God. - Karl Rahner, S.J.

IGNATIUS Perhaps you have wanted to share your Catholic faith and are not sure how to reach out to others. Alpha is an easy way to begin to answer this call - for you - and every Christian to respond in a concrete and practical way and bring the Gospel to our environment. The Church exists to bring the Gospel of Jesus to the world. This is the mission of every Christian. We are called to leave the comfort of the four-walls of the church building and share the great treasure that is, Jesus Christ! Before Jesus left us and ascended back to heaven, he said Go, to all the nations, teach them to carry out all that I taught you, and baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. On Monday evening October 23rd at 6:30 PM, I would like to invite you to attend a session explaining the Alpha Course. Alpha is a way to help bring people to know and encounter Jesus Christ. Jesus described himself as the Good Shepherd who went out to seek and find the lost sheep. All of the recent popes have spoken about what they called a New Evangelization. It is an invitation for us to reach out to those who have not encountered Jesus. Let us move from maintenance to mission. Of all the activities of the Church, announcing the Good News is most important. Please strongly consider coming to this initial meeting on Monday, October 23rd in Conlan Hall. It is most important to me and I believe essential to the future of our parish community. Father Leo McKernan?????? Don t forget! Food Collection each and every weekend at the vestibules of the Church and Chapel.

4 W O R S H I P L I T U R G Y A N D P R A Y E R DAILY MASSES Beginning on Monday, October 30th, we will once again have a 7:30 AM Mass Monday - Saturday. We need you!! Throughout this Fall season, we will explore all Liturgical Ministries and share the need to increase participation in all areas. Liturgical Ministry is an excellent opportunity to fulfill your Baptismal call of service to one another. Our Liturgies utilize the talents and gifts that God has given this community to its fullest extent. Whether participation is through behind the scenes planning and preparation or through service within the Mass, parishioner contributions help our liturgies to be truly life-giving celebrations. Please prayerfully consider joining one of these ministries. ALTAR SERVERS The role of the altar server (acolyte) is to assist the priest and deacon at the altar during Mass on Saturday/Sunday or other important days in the life of the Church. carry the cross, the candles, the bread, wine and water. The server holds the Roman Missal while the priest prays the opening and closing prayer. The server participates in the liturgy in a ministerial role, just as lectors, Eucharistic ministers and those serving as hospitality ministers. We invite young people beginning in 3 rd grade through high school and into adulthood to serve at Liturgy. If you can volunteer and be trained to serve as an altar server, contact Ms. Mary Lewis or Mrs. Jen Carey in the parish office at or at siloffice@aol.com. NEW OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUNG DADS Fr McKernan would be most grateful for 3-4 men from the parish that can begin to work with altar servers. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! Whether or not you have ever served at Mass we are looking for your assistance in this area. WHAT IS ALPHA? Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the basics of the Christian faith. Typically run over eleven weeks, each session looks at a different question that people can have about faith and is designed to create conversation. It s just an open, informal and honest space to explore and discuss life s big questions together. What does Alpha look like? There isn t really an average Alpha. Alpha is run in local communities all around the world, and everyone s welcome. It runs in cafés, churches, bars, prisons, parks, universities, schools, homes - you name it. No two Alphas look the same, but generally they have three key things in common: food, a talk and good conversation. Food Whether it s a group of friends gathered around a kitchen table, or a quick catch-up over coffee and cake, food has a way of bringing people together. It s no different at Alpha. Most sessions start with food, because it s a great way to build community and get to know each other. Talk The talks are designed to engage guests and inspire conversation. Usually around thirty minutes long, they can be given as a live talk or played as a video, all for free. They explore the big issues around faith and unpack the basics of Christianity, addressing questions such as Who is Jesus? and How can I have faith? Discussion Probably the most important part of any Alpha: the chance to share thoughts and ideas on the topic, and simply discuss it in a small group. There s no obligation to say anything and there s nothing you can t say (seriously). It s an opportunity to hear from others and contribute your own perspective in an honest, friendly and open environment.
