Please deliver envelopes by hand, mail, or in church.. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you, as always, for your continued support of our parish community. Our Parish Goal - $90, CATHOLIC SOCIAL SERVICES & PARISH SOCIAL JUSTICE GRANTS Strengthening our commitment to social justice and to those in need. Your gifts to the Diocesan Annual Appeal enables us to serve the poorest, the weakest and the most vulnerable among us through the ministries of Catholic Social Services that feed the hungry, clothe the naked and provide shelter, counseling and assistance for those most in need. Many more individuals in parish communities receive assistance through parish-based Social Justice Programs funded by the Appeal. Diocesan Grants were awarded to 45 parish programs this year including food and clothing pantries, monthly dinners for families in need and outreach to prison inmates. This is a requirement for the 1 st year Confirmation program. WEEKLY MEDITATION Let s be honest with each other. Is there anyone who has not been angry with a neighbor, friend or even a family member? Is there anyone who has not offended or, more seriously, sinned against another? If the answer is as expected, then we are all in the same boat - being both the offended and the offender. The only recourse is to forgive, and not dwell on the misdeed....forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive These familiar words express not only a plea, but also a responsibility. Don t forget! 3 Page 3 ADULT FAITH FORMATION Scripture Readings with the Pastor September 19 th thru November 21 st Reserve the date and come join us for Reading Scriptures with Father McKernan, who will guide us as we examine Acts of the Apostles (the birth and growth of the Church) from the NEW TESTAMENT. All sessions are scheduled for Conlan Hall at St. Ignatius, and will begin at 6:30 PM on Tuesday September 19 th and continue each Tuesday thru November 21 st. Participants are invited to come and relax and to bring their own Bibles. The Altar Breads and Wine for this week are offered In Memory of James & Helen O Brien as requested by Daughter WEDNESDAY TALKS - OCTOBER 4TH - DEMENTIA AND THE CAREGIVER OCTOBER 4TH - 7:00 PM - BERGAN PARISH CENTER - 1ST FLOOR Sister Marilyn Karas, RSM, well known to many in our parish for the work she has done with different groups over the years, will return to share information on a topic very near to her heart. A few years ago Sister s mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer s disease, a form of dementia which affects 5.4 millions of Americans a figure which will rise dramatically as our aging population grows. Also, Alzheimer s disease, which is the most prevalent form of dementia, is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. Since learning of her mother s condition, Sister has studied and collected a wealth of information on dementia, which she will share with caregivers and persons interested in learning more about this epidemic. Sister writes that some 15 million Alzheimer s caregivers provide 17 million hours each year. Please join us for this informative presentation. Since handouts will be provided, we are asking those interested in attending to contact the rectory ( ) to insure an adequate supply. VISITATION OF THE SICK If you or someone you know is going to be admitted to a hospital or nursing home, please call the parish office and let us know. Due to privacy rules, the hospitals do not notify us unless specifically requested by the patient. Also, if you know of a parishioner that is sick or homebound, please let us know. Thank you! Please stop in Conlan Hall and visit with fellow parishioners. We encourage you to spend quiet time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament throughout the week with a special prayer intention in mind. Just pick up a card after your visit to Church and send it off to the one in your prayer. The cards may be used on First Fridays by those attending Eucharistic Adoration. Think gospel! Please make room for your neighbor in Church and slide to the center of the pew.

4 W O R S H I P L I T U R G Y A N D P R A Y E R INSTALLATION OF OUR PASTOR FATHER MCKERNAN On Sunday, September 24th, Father McKernan will be installed as the Pastor of St. Ignatius Loyola Church. Father John Polednak, the Episcopal Vicar of the Southern Pastoral Region, will install Father McKernan at the Noon Mass. A light reception will follow in Conlan Hall. May God continue to bless Father McKernan with His peace and may Our Blessed Mother continue to protect him with her presence. Youth When have you forgiven someone who treated you unfairly? 2018 MASS BOOK TO OPEN - OCTOBER 11TH We will begin to schedule Masses for 2018 on Wednesday, October 11th. Due to the change in our Daily Mass schedule, namely, that there is no longer a 7:30 AM Mass on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, there were some adjustments that needed to be established. There will be a limit of 4 Masses that can be requested per family. Only Death Anniversary Masses are able to be scheduled. Also, requested Masses are only able to be scheduled as the Daily Mass...NOT a weekend Mass, as these are reserved for older Mass intentions (which are Mass intentions that were requested in the years ) Your understanding and cooperation is greatly appreciated. We will do our best to satisfy your request, however, please keep in mind that there are now 12 fewer Masses available each month. Thank you. If you do not already know how to knit or crochet, teachers are available to assist you and all supplies are furnished. ST. HEDWIG S MINI REUNION It s hard to believe, but it has been ten years since the Church of St. Hedwig closed. This year we are planning a gathering of former parishioners and friends of St. Hedwig s. This celebration will be held on Monday, October 16th at 7:00 PM. A service honoring St. Hedwig will be celebrated followed by a reception in Conlan Hall. All are welcome to come and enjoy the fellowship of old and new friends and share memories. Father Richard plans to attend and hopefully others from neighboring parishes will be there. Anyone with anything to offer or help plan are asked to call Joan & Mike Stretanski at or SUPPORT REQUEST FOR RUTH S PLACE ANNUAL WALK FOR HOPE OCTOBER 1 ST As part of our parish outreach ministry to help the homeless, Mary s Ministry is again registering as a team to represent the parish to support Ruth s Place Walk for Hope All proceeds will go to providing 24-hour shelter and case management services for women experiencing homelessness in Luzerne County. This two-mile Walk-A-Thon will take place Sunday October 1, 2017 from 1 PM to 3 PM at Public Square, Wilkes-Barre. Please consider helping us in one or more of the following ways: Join the Team. Anyone who would like to walk with us is more than welcome. Please come with us and trace the daily path of women experiencing homelessness in our area. 9 BAPTISM Expectant and new parents are asked to participate in a seminar on Baptism. Please call the Rectory at Godparents are welcome to attend, though it is not required. Please call the rectory to register at your earliest convenience. The celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism is on the third Sunday of every month. MARRIAGE Congratulations! You are asked to contact one of the parish priests at least six months before the date of your marriage so that the appropriate preparations can be made for this special celebration. VISITATION OF THE SICK Please call the office for visitation of the sick at home, in the hospital, or health care facility. (September May) THE RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS This is a process the Catholic Church uses to bring adult members into the faith.
