1 THE CHURCH OF S AINT I GNATIUS L OYOLA S T A T I O N S O F T H E C R O S S This traditional Lenten exercise will be held each Friday of Lent at 5:30 PM E V E N I N G P R A Y E R Each Sunday of Lent we will celebrate Evening Prayer in song at 5:00 PM. C O N F E S S I O N S The Light Is On For You - Mondays of Lent from 5:30-6:30 PM. St. Ignatius and all the parishes in the Diocese of Scranton will be open for individual confessions beginning Monday, March 11th and continue for five weeks. We will still hold our regular Saturday confessions. L E N T E N F A S T I N G R E G U L A T I O N S Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In addition, all Catholics 14 years old and older must abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and the Fridays of Lent. F A M I L I E S H E L P I N G F A M I L I E S - L E N T E N C A M P A I G N We are especially reminded of God s mercy during Lent. We can spread God s mercy by generous service to those in need. With that in mind, the religious education program s Lenten campaign, Families Helping Families will begin the first weekend of Lent. Please consider offering your change. Containers will be located in the foyer of the and Chapel beginning the first weekend of Lent. The proceeds of this campaign will be shared by St. Vincent De Paul Soup Kitchen and the Dinner 4 Kids program. Thank you for your generosity. E A S T E R D U T Y All parishioners are reminded of their obligation to fulfill their Easter Duty. A person s Easter duty consists of receiving Holy Communion at least once between Ash Wednesday and Pentecost Sunday as well as going to the Sacrament of Reconciliation to confess any mortal sin. This year Pentecost Sunday is June 9 th. 3 M I N U T E R E T R E A T Would you like to spend 3 quiet meaningful minutes in focused reflection this Lent? These peaceful prayer breaks can be found at Scroll down to Spirituality and click on 3 Minute Retreat. A ROMAN CATHOLIC C OMMUNITY INSPIRED BY THE TRADITION OF ST. IGNATIUS, S T. HEDWIG AND S T. MARY'S ANNUNCIATION PARISHES. W e, the blended Catholic community of St. Ignatius Loyola, draw strength from Word and Sacrament, especially in the celebration of the Eucharist. Modeling Christ s work, we embrace our commitment to God s call. We remain faithful to the shared acts of prayer, study and service. Together we extend Christ s hospitality to others and light the path of peace for generations to come. Knowing God is more important than knowing about God. - Karl Rahner, S.J.

The Taizé service is a meditative Christian experience of prayer that includes silence and chanting. Sanctuary Candles Burn this week In Memory of George Kapral & Son, George By Sophie Kapral Many blessings for Jaclyn Reisser By Family WEEKLY MEDITATION The leads us into the 40 days of Lent today. At the same time, we are reminded in Luke s Gospel that Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert for 40 days of fasting and temptation. The current time provides abundant opportunities to choose to do good (spread joy) or evil (cultivate negativity). May our personal practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving help us to overcome temptation and grow closer to God who consoles and protects us. Reacting to events without careful thought can make us unwitting helpers of Satan. Instead, we should follow Jesus s example - prayer. Lent is full of opportunities to grow new prayer practices and grow closer to God who consoles and protects us always. We encourage you to spend quiet time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament throughout the week with a special prayer intention in mind. Just pick up a card after your visit to and send it off to the one in your prayer. The cards may be used on First Fridays by those attending Eucharistic Adoration. Think gospel! Please make room for your neighbor in and slide to the center of the pew.

3 Page 3 W O R S H I P L I T U R G Y A N D P R A Y E R In recognition of our need to give, and the many needs of our church and parish, and in gratitude for God s gifts to us, we declare our willingness to return a portion of our Treasure to our parish, as part of our total Christian stewardship. Sunday Tithe $13, (501 Envelopes) This Week s Expenses $9, Priests Collection $1, BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION Please leave Box Tops for Education with UPC bar code and soda tabs to benefit Good Shepherd Academy. Boxes are located in the and Chapel foyers. LENT: A SEASON FOR FASTING Fast from judging others: Feast on Christ living in them. Fast from harsh words: Feast on words that build up others. Fast from discontent: Feast on gratitude. Fast from anger: Feast on patience. Fast from pessimism: Feast on optimism. Fast from worry: Feast on God s care. Fast from complaining: Feast on appreciation. Fast from bitterness: Feast on forgiveness. Fast from self-concern: Feast on compassion for others. Fast from discouragement: Feast on hope. Fast from facts that depress me: Feast on facts that uplift. Fast from suspicion: Feast on truth. Fast from thoughts that weaken: Feast on promises that inspire. Fast from idle gossip: Feast on silence with a purpose. Good and gracious God, I pause during this Lenten season to reflect on your Passion and Death. I pray for the strength and grace to fast from those things that move away from you and to feast on your love. I ask that you be with me in my attempt to be your disciple. Amen. LENT WHY DO WE???: Lent is a special season where the prepares for the great feast of Easter. In many ways, it is a forty-day retreat of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. At Mass, we mark this time of preparation with several liturgical actions. WHY IS THE GLORIA NOT SUNG DURING LENT? The Gloria is always omitted during Lent, although it is sung on solemnities such as St. Joseph s Day, The Annunciation, and the feast of St. Patrick. By suppressing the joyful song of the Gloria, the liturgy places greater emphasis on the Act of Penance. This gives the whole liturgy a more somber air, suitable for a season of preparation and penance. Don t forget! Food Collection each and every weekend at the vestibules of the and Chapel.
