1 CREATING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE AT ST. IGNATIUS Over the past several weeks this column has centered on an important shared learning and collaborative process. As your Parish Pastoral Council, we have asked you to make your voices heard through the Parish Survey so that we can better understand the needs and wishes of the parish community. We have also, in asking you for yet another kind of input, worked to share the principles that guide us as a Parish Pastoral Council, as we invite you to consider nominating a friend (or yourself) as a candidate for service as a new Council member. The Church of Saint Ignatius Loyola Put another way, we have, quite simply, asked a lot of you. At the same time, we have done so in the spirit of the common responsibility and commitment to St. Ignatius that unites us as a vibrant and active and thriving parish. Your work and your participation, through the survey and through the names you present as potential candidates for service on the Parish Pastoral Council, will be a central guiding force as we work collectively, through the Parish Life Plan for the next 3-5 years, to shape the future we all envision and want to realize for St. Ignatius. Last week you read about eight defining characteristics of Parish Pastoral Councils committed to Servant Leadership (as outlined by the Diocesan Parish Pastoral Council Guidelines and Resources): Prayerful; Faithful; Representative; Pastoral; Discerning; Prophetic; Empowering; Collaborative. This list of attributes helps to give you a clearer sense of the guiding principles of our Parish Pastoral Council (and of others like it in the Diocese). The list is impressive and inspiring (and perhaps even a bit daunting). At the same time, as you likely realized as you read it, the list reflects the traits of a strong parish as much as it reflects the traits of a strong Parish Pastoral Council. Indeed, as St. Ignatius makes clear in manifold ways every day, the parish and the Parish Pastoral Council can only really reflect each other in living and embodying these principles as a community. Thank you for all of the work that you do to make St. Ignatius the sustaining force that it is and thank you for your commitment to ensuring that we create a sustainable future for St. Ignatius in the coming years, and for generations to come. 2 THIS WEEK AT A GLANCE FEAST OF SAINT IGNATIUS LOYOLA The parish will celebrate the Feast of Saint Ignatius Loyola tonight (Sunday) at 7:00 PM with Evening Prayer. During this service, the special prayer intentions which are listed in the book in the back of the Church will be remembered. All are invited to attend. FATHER ALEX RETURNS FROM HABITAT FOR HUMANITY In our continuing ministry to the youth of the parish, Father Alex Roche spent the week with members of the Youth Group in West Virginia. He will be working with Jenn Frusciante, our parish Youth Minister, supporting the youth of the parish. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL Come to the Everywhere Fun Fair! - explore Bible stories, make awesome crafts, eat tasty snacks, play games, sing and more! When: Monday, August 5th to Friday, August 9th. Time: 9:30 AM - Noon. Ages: students that have completed one year of pre-school to those who have completed Grade 5. Fee: $10.00 per child. Please do not include any clothing, bedding or furniture in your donations. STUDYING THE LITURGY - PREFACE The element of thanksgiving in the Eucharistic Prayer is found in the Preface which comes after The Lord be with you dialogue and before the Holy, Holy. About ninety Prefaces exist in the church s repertoire today, and all of them begin with these or similar words, It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, almighty and eternal God. The particular Preface prayed on any given day relates to the feast, season, or special celebrations of that day. MASS IN REMEMBRANCE OF VICTIMS OF VIOLENT OR TRAGIC DEATH The Diocese of Scranton is offering the annual Mass in remembrance of victims of violent or tragic death. This Mass is offered for the families and friends of those who have died in tragedy, especially through murder, suicide, and accident. The Mass is scheduled for Thursday, August 1st at 7:00 PM in St. Peter s Cathedral, Scranton. All persons who have lost a loved one through tragic and traumatic death are invited to this liturgy. We ask that the names of deceased loved ones are registered on registration forms which are available in the parish office or accessed on the Service and Social Concerns webpage on the Diocese of Scranton s website, Questions concerning this Mass may be directed to the Office for Parish Life at , ext HOSPITALLER SISTERS OF MERCY - MISSION COLLECTION - AUGUST 10 & 11 The Hospitaller Sisters of Mercy, in Roma, Italy was established by Princess Teresa Orsini in Pamphili on May 16th, 1821 and blessed by His Holiness Pope Pius VII. The Sisters live in three communities in Camden Diocese, New Jersey and the mother s delegate s residence is in Pleasantville, NJ. The sisters work with special charism To assist Jesus in His suffering members. First of all through hospital apostolate, they care for the sick and the aged, and work for the marginalized low income groups of people in the missions through socio, economic, education development and faith programs. Please be generous with your donations. SCHOOL SUPPLIES NEEDED St. Vincent de Paul Kitchen is collecting back packs, notebooks, markers, pens, pencils, crayons and three hole paper. Last year, 1,141 children received school supplies. All supplies may be dropped off at St. Vincent de Paul Kitchen, 39 E. Jackson St., Wilkes-Barre. Volunteers are needed to pack and distribute the backpacks at Our Lady of Hope, 40 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre. Packing will take place - Monday thru Thursday, August 12th - 15th from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM and distribution will take place - Monday, August 19th from 9:00-11:00 AM and 1:00-3:00 PM and Tuesday, August 20th from 9:00-11:00 AM and 4:00-6:00 PM. 4 Page 4 J U L Y 2 8, REFLECTIONS OF THE WORSHIP COMMISSION THE MINISTRY OF HOSPITALITY Why should a welcoming environment be integral to Catholic worship? St. Paul directed, welcome one another just as Christ welcomed you, for the glory of God. Romans 15.7 The Bishops Commission quoted St. Paul in the Induction to the Order of the Mass published in They continued that the gathering rite should ensure that the faithful come together as one established communion. Is it enough for the faithful to reverently attend at Mass as individuals or are we called to be proactive in welcoming those who are present: our friends and neighbors, strangers, the non-english speaking, the poor, disabled, marginalized. If we are called to welcome one another, and we are, how can this best be accomplished at St. Ignatius? Should volunteers greet worshipers as they enter church for Mass? Should we say hello to our pew neighbors as the liturgy begins? Should we move to the center of the pew so that those who follow can easily find a place? All parishioners are called to establish a welcoming environment, called to the Ministry of Hospitality, especially those who are not called to other ministries. How will we respond to this call? AFTER BAZAAR PIEROGI SALE When Thursday s rain dampened some of our food sales, we ended up with some still frozen (never thawed) pierogi. We have a limited number of farmers cheese, packed in single dozens for $8.00. The potato/sharp cheese are packed in two (2) dozen packages and will be sold for $ They will be available after Masses at the Church in Conlan Hall this weekend while supplies last.
