1 Aug 20, 2017 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Join Us for Mass: Mon-Fri 10 am Sat 8 am & 5 pm website: Dayton Ave - Saint Paul, MN Sunday 9 am,11 am & 5pm parishcenter@saintmark-mn.org One Strong Family United in Christ Lessons from the Canaanite Woman When we think of our Biblical heroes, the Canaanite woman might not be at the top of our list. Remember her story? Her daughter is in trouble and needs help. The woman hears that Jesus is passing through the region, and desperate to get her daughter the help she needs, goes in search of Him. Fr. Humberto Palomino, P.E.S. Pastor of the Church of St. Mark From Matthew s gospel, we get the sense that the woman has followed after Jesus and his disciples for a while, calling out for help. The disciples finally say to the Lord, Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us. The silence of the Lord, and even His seeming rejection, do not deter the Canaanite woman. She believes in His goodness and pleads, Lord, help me. She knows that she doesn t deserve the miracle she is asking for her daughter, but begs, Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters. The Fruitfulness of Humility Our Lord is meek and humble of heart. [See Mt 11: 29] It is impossible for our hearts to be united with His until they are humble as well, like the heart of the Canaanite woman. It is impossible for our lives to reflect the light of Jesus, so as to draw others to His Heart, until our own hearts are humbled. Faith Formation Registration is Open! Wednesday Night Faith Formation for Children and Youth Wednesday evening Faith Formation classes are now open for registration for all parish children in K-8 (2nd graders have a special First Sacraments program, see below). A new format and revised curriculum will be used this year to include whole group and age-divided learning to be more cooperative, creative, and emphasize the distinct charism of Saint Mark's parish. See the website for more specifics. Classes will be every Wednesday, beginning September 27, 2017 in Carolyn Hall from 6:30-7:45. Our Lord s encounter with the Canaanite woman brought God s mercy into the world, because she was humble. The woman s daughter was healed, and those who witnessed the miracle must have been healed of their doubts and Confirmation Registration fears as well. We can never know the extent of the ripple effect of our small Now Open acts of humility and trust. 8th Grade is an exciting year as we prepare for the Sacrament of (Continued on page 2) Confirmation. The Confirmation year will begin Upcoming Events with a meeting for parents and Monday Rosary Upper Church 8/21 6:30-7:00p student on Sunday, Sept GWCTD TBD 8/26 7:00-9:00p 10th, 6:30-7:30pm in Carolyn Family First Friday RCIA Info Session See Pg 3 Parish Center 9/1 9/6 5:30p 7:00pm (Continued on page 3) All God s children are welcome to this sacred place and liturgy. The Catholic understanding of Holy Communion as the very Body and Blood of Jesus Christ limits the reception of the Holy Eucharist to those who share our faith and are united in discipleship within the life of the Church. Our brothers and sisters of other faiths are invited to come forward to receive a blessing at this time. Please indicate the desire to do so by crossing arms over the chest.
2 Page 2 August 20, 2017 Pastor s Article - cont d The heart of Mary is the perfect example of humility for us. Her fiat is possible because she sees herself as the handmaid of the Lord. She gives everything into the hands of God and allows Him to use her in the ways He wants, without conditions. She does not think of herself and her own needs, desires or dreams, but wants to live for others. It is good for us to remember that we are not owed anything by God. His love and mercy toward us, His creatures, is completely gratuitous. When we experience difficulties sickness or suffering of any kind, being treated badly by someone else, even the pain of being ignored or rejected we should ask for the grace to respond like the Canaanite woman. It is our humility that attracts God most surely to our heart and produces fruit for souls. God loves to make beautiful things out of our dust, just as, at the Creation, He formed man out of the dust of the ground, and blew the breath of life into him. [See Gen 2: 7] The Mysterious Pedagogy of God It s not easy for us to humble ourselves, and admit our nothingness. We want to believe we have things under control, and that we don t need help. The Canaanite woman didn t have that problem. She wasn t afraid to come to our Lord as a beggar. But Jesus knew the faith of this woman. He put her faith to the test, so that the disciples, you and I, and many others throughout history could learn from her example. Her faith became more radiant as it was tested as she humbled herself further. God was able to bring a greater good into the world because of her humility. The next time it seems like God has left us alone like He is sleeping in the boat while the storm rages [see Mt 8: 23-27] consider that maybe He is treating us like the Canaanite woman. It is our testing (our failures and our getting up again) that strengthens faith, hope and love in us, and allows God s mercy to be poured out for others. Let s ask Mary to help us. As soon as she perceives in any soul even the smallest similarity to her own assent, she slips in and helps that soul expand so that it will be ready for the Son s tasks. [Van Speyr, The Handmaid of the Lord] The expansion of our soul can be a painful thing, my brothers and sisters, but is worth every sacrifice.
