He criticizes the priests and all the people for failing to obey the Covenant and keeping faith with one another. St. Paul praises God that the Thessalonians have received the Word of God from him and taken it to heart. In the gospel Jesus tells the crowds that the Scribes and the Pharisees sit on the chair of Moses. Therefore they are to do and observe all things that these authorities command them to do. However, he warns them not to follow their example because they do not practice what they preach, they lay heavy burdens on the people but do not lift a finger to help them, and they perform their good deeds in order to be seen in public. He explains that the greatest among you must be the servant of all. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted. Malachi 1:14b - 2:2b, Thessalonians 2:7b-9, 13 Matthew 23:1-12 ALL SAINTS DAY In the Book of Revelation St. John has a vision on the end time, when all the faithful will be gathered around the throne of God. In his First Letter St. John tells the faithful that we do not know what we shall be like in heaven, but that when it is revealed we shall be like God and see him face to face. Matthew s gospel story of the Beatitudes promises the kingdom of heaven to those who imitate Christ s virtues on earth. All Saints Day is a Holy Day of Obligation. We will celebrate masses this Tuesday, November 1 at 8:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. (school mass) and at 7 p.m. Revelation 7:2-4, John 3:1-3 Matthew 5:1-12a Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed (All Souls Day) On All Souls day we commemorate all of our faithful departed, remembering Christ s promise to raise them up on the last day. The Book of Wisdom encourages the people, saying that the just are in the hands of God and no torment shall touch them. St. Paul writes to the Romans that hope does not disappoint because God s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to those who believe. God proves his love for us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. In the gospel Jesus tells the crowds that no one who comes to him will be rejected because it is the Father s will that no one given to Jesus will be lost. Finally, the Lord says that everyone who sees the Son and believes will have eternal life and be raised on the last day. Our faith is one of hope and love which promises freedom from sin and death. All Souls Day is Wednesday, November 2nd. We will celebrate our normal 8:30 a.m. mass. We will also celebrate a Mass of Remembrance at 7 p.m. for all our beloved deceased. In a special way we will remember those who have died in the past year. All are welcome. Wisdom 3:1-9 Romans 5:5-11 John 6:37-40

3 October 30, 2011 Thirtieth-First Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three From the Pastor s Desk In last Sunday s gospel Jesus gave us the commandments to love God with all our heart and all our soul and to love our neighbor as ourselves. Today we get some concrete advice on just how to put these commandments into practice. The prophet Malachi suggests that we can keep God s covenant by keeping God s ways, showing no favoritism in our dealings and to keep faith with one another. It is a simple call to honesty, fidelity and treating one another kindly. Jesus gives us the same instructions in a two-fold manner. First, he says to obey the laws of the Covenant. Do whatever the Scribes and the Pharisees instruct since they sit on the seat of Moses. Second, he says, do not imitate their actions since they do not practice what they preach. The behavior of their leaders does not invalidate their teaching or their authority. We are called to obey the teachings of Christ even if our teachers do not themselves put their words into actions. He condemns the Scribes and the Pharisees because they lay heavy burdens on others and do not lift a finger to help them. He asks us not to place burdens on others unless we are willing to help carry them. In fact, we are called to help others carry their burdens whether or not we had any part in creating them. And rather than putting ourselves forward seeking worldly honors we are to humble ourselves so that others may come to believe the message of Christ. As we come to the end of Respect Life Month, I want to thank all of you who have supported our church s efforts to defend the sanctity of all human life. There are so many problems related to hunger, poverty, medical care, domestic and other types of violence that we can sometimes seem overwhelmed. But the beginning of the solution lies at our own doorstep, simply by becoming aware of these issues and reflecting on them in light of Christ s commandment in last week s gospel to love our neighbor as ourselves. It is my hope that we will all continue to pray for God to guide our hearts so that we may be his face to those in need. Thank you to all who made donations to the Baby Bottle Project. The bottles will be delivered to the Women s Center this week. However, bottles may be dropped off any time at the rectory and we will make sure they get turned in. The Ministers of Care met this past Tuesday to pray for, and share the stories of, our parishioners whom they visit at home or in the hospital. They bring the message of God s love and the gift of prayer and the Eucharist to nearly forty people in their homes as well as regularly visit two of our local hospitals. Thank you to Ed Stecker for coordinating this ministry and to all those who volunteer their time to share our faith. Also, I do celebrate the sacraments of reconciliation, anointing and communion for those unable to come to the church. If you or anyone you know would like to receive communion at home, even on a temporary basis due to illness or injury, please call the rectory to arrange visitation. The Church celebrates two major feasts this week. Tuesday, November 1st is All Saints Day when we honor all those who have shared with us a path to holiness. Our masses are at 8:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. (school) and 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 2nd is All Souls Day when we remember all the those who have gone before us in faith. Our regular mass will be held at 8:30 a.m. There will be a special Mass of Remembrance at 7:00 p.m., honoring those who have died in the past year as well as prayers for all of the beloved deceased. There will be a table for memorabilia of those who have died that will receive a special blessing. Refreshments will be served after the mass. All are welcome. Our Confirmation Candidates and their families will celebrate a special Rite of Enrollment at the family mass next Sunday as they begin their preparation to receive the sacrament in April. Please keep these children and their families in your prayers. (Daylight Savings Time begins next Sunday when the clocks are turned back one hour.) There will be representatives from Sacred Art here next week to sell religious goods from the Holy Land to support Christian families there. The annual report to the parish will also be available next weekend. Thank you to the Parents Association for a fun-filled Halloween Party on Friday, complete with haunted house, games and refreshments. Monday is Halloween. Originally called All Hallows Eve, the medieval church believed that it was the time when all the souls of those who were not buried in consecrated ground roamed the world seeking release. It was a very scary time, when people believed that these ghosts and other spirits would not only frighten the living but try to steal their souls. Historically many people were denounced as witches who cast evil spells on people. This was all superstition with no basis in fact. Today it is a holiday for children, simply for make-believe and fun. Please have a good time and stay safe. Please be careful and watch out for the children, especially when driving. Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

4 Page Four Thirtieth-First Sunday in Ordinary Time October 30, 2011 New Roman Missal Changes:Lost (and Found) in Translation As we continue to explore the new Roman Missal translation, we turn our attention to the realities of translating. Traveling to a foreign country where a different language is spoken can be daunting. Finding the correct words and phrases to maneuver through airports, train stations, restaurants, and market places can range from comedic to frustrating. Often, things get lost in translation. It is important to remember that the Church s universal liturgical language is Latin. This means that, in order for the new Roman Missal translation to be implemented all over the world, it needs to comfortably and appropriately find a home in numerous vernacular languages. For English-speaking countries, this task began shortly after the 3rd edition of the Roman Missal was issued in The Roman Missal translation that we will be implementing in Advent 2011, however, has a very different flavor from the translation of the second edition that we ve been using these last few decades. So, what s different about this translation and, more specifically, why does it sound different? What will be happening to the words we use at mass? In the first years of the renewal of the liturgy after the Second Vatican Council, the art of translating the Latin liturgical texts was just developing. The very first formal guidelines for translating Latin texts, contained in a document issued in 1969 (Comme le Prévoit, Instruction on the translation of liturgical texts for celebrations with a congregation), followed a principle of translation that is known as dynamic equivalence. The main characteristic of this principle is that, when translating from one language to another, what is emphasized is the meaning, or the message of the text. So, under this principle, the English would not necessarily be a literal, word-for-word translation of the Latin. The art of translating liturgical texts, however, is an organic art that has developed since the 1960s. For example, at one time we crossed ourselves saying, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, instead of Holy Spirit. Even more recently, some will recall when, at the end of the first or second reading, the lector said, This is the Word of the Lord, instead of the current phrase, The Word of the Lord. New Ideas about the Roman Missal Translation The developing nature of the art of translating liturgical texts became evident in 2001 when the Vatican issued new guidelines (Liturgiam Authenticam, Instruction on the use of vernacular languages in the publication of the books of the Roman Liturgy) to guide the Roman Missal translation of the third edition, which Pope John Paul II had promulgated that same year. These guidelines follow a principle of translation known as formal equivalence. The main characteristic of this principle is that, when translating from one language to another, what is emphasized is literal fidelity, rendering a word-for-word translation of the original source text. In practical terms, the English used in the new Roman Missal translation will sound different from the current translation mainly because the methods and principles of translation that are used have changed. As we prepare to implement the new Roman Missal translation in Advent 2011, we experience the excitement of discovering new words and phrases that adhere to the original Latin text more faithfully. We hope that these new words, previously lost in translation, will enable us to communicate our praise and worship of a good and gracious God, whose glory transcends all words. Roman Missal Q&A Sessions You have been reading each week in the bulletin about the changes to the liturgy that will go into effect the first weekend of Advent. You may be wondering what are the changes and what do they mean for us at St. Robert Bellarmine. We wanted to offer an opportunity for all in the parish to ask some questions and learn more. If you are interested in participating in this discussion, please attend either of the following Sessions. Thursday, Nov. 10 th immediately following the 8:30am Mass in Kernigan Hall OR Tuesday, Nov. 15 th at 7pm in the Church

The Mass does not end here, it continues in various ways during the week until we return to Mass the following week. When a death occurs, life for those who live on changes forever. The Bereavement Ministry is one way to follow this path. The Bereavement Ministry is notified when there is a death in the parish community. Arrangement is made to meet with the family. The Bereavement Minister extends the condolences of the parish and gives the family information designed to help family and friends plan a funeral liturgy that will be a source of comfort and strength. Sometimes the family requests that the Bereavement Minster be part of that planning. Whatever the case, we are here to assist in a time of need. Every Christian is asked to carry on this work. We need volunteers to help out in this ministry in various way. Please join us for a meeting on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at 7 p.m. in the rectory for more information.
