Kunysz Jr. Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time In our first reading the temple priest tells Amos to leave the land of Judah because his prophecy is not welcome. Amos responds that he is not a prophet but has been sent by God. In our second reading to the Ephesians, St. Paul proclaims the wonderful good news of our faith. God, out of love for us, sent his Son to become our Savior. We have redemption through the blood of Christ, shed for the forgiveness of our sins. In Mark s gospel Jesus sends out the Apostles to preach repentance, giving them authority over unclean spirits and the power to heal. Amos 7:12-15 Ephesians 1:3-14 Mark 6: Catholic Festival of Faith The love of Christ impels us The 2009 Catholic Festival Faith will be held this year on October 16th and 17th at the Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont. This two day event celebrates our faith with vibrant liturgies, panel discussions, break-out sessions on a variety of topics as well as booksellers and vendors of all things Catholic. There are special activities for young people. All are encouraged to spend at least part of either Friday or Saturday to share in this exciting festival of Catholic Chicago. Come to understand and feel the joy and confidence, as we gather for the Catholic Festival of Faith. In worship together, we will praise God. In talks and break-out sessions, we will appreciate in a new and fresh way our Catholic faith. In our social time, we will renew our connections as a diverse people of one faith who all share a holy purpose. 3 July 12, 2009 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three Our scriptures this weekend continue St. Mark s theme of listening to the Word of God. We are reminded that the Word of God can come from the most unlikely places. It takes an open mind to truly hear God s Word. And it takes a heart of faith to act on that Word, especially if we don t like what we hear. In the first reading we hear the Israelite response to the prophet Amos. Amos was one of the first of the prophets to call the leaders of the people back to the Covenant. Amos was sent by God to bring about reform. The cultic priests who ministered in the temple and the synagogues were the official clergy and interpreters of the Laws of Moses. At the same time there was a group of professional prophets who prophesied based on visions they had received. While many were probably honest interpreters of God s Word, many of them made a comfortable living telling people that what they wanted to hear was, indeed, the will of God. Amos comes with bad news, telling the people of God s impending judgment (loss of the kingdom to the neighboring Assyrians) if they did not turn back to the Covenant. Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, tells Amos to flee the kingdom of Israel and make his living elsewhere. Amos responds that he is not a prophet, but rather, a shepherd. He tells the priest that God has called him to prophesy to the people. Because Amos message was unpopular, the king and the priests ignored him. And, of course, not too many years later the northern kingdom was conquered. Obviously, there are very serious consequences for ignoring the Word of God. This is the same spiritual lesson we heard in last week s gospel. The people of Jesus home town ignored his teaching because he was one of them, so commonplace that they couldn t believe he came from God. In today s gospel Jesus sends the Apostles out to preach repentance throughout the surrounding countryside. He gives them authority over unclean spirits and the power to cast out demons and cure the sick. He gives them the injunction to stay with those who welcome them and preach repentance. Those who accept the apostles, even though they are unlettered nobodies, will be healed. Jesus also gives them an admonition against those who do not welcome or listen to their word to shake the dust off your feet in testimony against them. We, too, have the same choice. We have to open our hearts to listen to the Holy Spirit and have confidence in God s love and grace. We hear this great Christological hymn in St. Paul s letter to the Ephesians to give us the courage and confidence we need. God chose us before the foundation of the world to be holy and destined us for adoption through Jesus Christ. We have redemption by his blood for the forgiveness of sins in the richness of the grace he has lavished upon us. We who have heard the Word of Truth, the gospel of salvation, and have believed in him, are sealed with the Holy Spirit, the first installment of our inheritance. This is truly the source of our faith and the vision for our lives. Fr. Mike came home from the hospital this past Monday. His hip surgery was successful. He has already begun physical therapy and rehab. He can be reached at St. Bartholomew s rectory. Thank you for all your prayers and support. The Finance Committee met this past Monday to review the bids for our capital repairs. We have accepted a bid for the masonry work on the school buildings and a separate bid for the repair and repaving of the back parking lot. These have to be submitted to the Archdiocese for approval. When I have the final bid numbers, expected this week, I will provide you all with more details. We hope to begin the work soon and have this first phase of the reconstruction completed before school begins. In addition, we will do some minor repair work on the church chimney and east entrance. The Greater Chicago Food Depository will be conducting a Christmas in July Food Drive on Wednesday, July 22nd at Our Lady Mother of the Church. Many people are struggling with food insecurity, and with school out for the summer many children do not receive a decent meal. Our Summer Mission Appeal will be held the weekend of July to benefit the Divine Word Missionaries. Please save the date, Saturday, November 7th, for the Parish Dinner Dance and Raffle. We will be hosting it in the Kernaghan Hall this year to help keep down the cost. I hope you all has a blessed Independence Day weekend. I was able to see the US Army Golden Knights parachute team, have dinner with priest friends and see the fireworks in Dubuque. These times build the bonds that are so important in our lives.
