JULY 2018 JULY WORSHIP SERVICES July 1 st Pastor Lee will be preaching on John 8:31-36 with the message Are You Really Free? on this Independence Day (Fourth of July) Sunday. We also will celebrate the Lord s Supper, so invite someone to church! July 8 th A Recipe After Faith will be the sermon topic with 2 Peter 1:3-11 as the Scripture Passage. It s always important to have a good recipe when making something to fill our stomachs and more important to have a good recipe in making our lives fulfilled. July 15 th July 22 nd July 29 th Pastor Lee will be focusing on I John 5:18-20 with the title: Who Do You Know? Who is the most important person in your life? Come and hear Pastor Lee s ideas to this question. Grace and Peace two very important words especially in the New Testament will be the points of discussion during Pastor Lee s message. He will be using Revelation 1:4b-8 as well as other New Testament passages to help us understand the importance of these two very important concepts in our lives. We will again be blessed with the preaching of Rev. Joe Fontana this Sunday. Joe is a retired pastor that has preached at HPC several times. He always brings an inspiring message.

3 Pastor-Lee Thoughts It s July! The year is half over already. Can you believe it? This month we celebrate our country s independence. The 4 th of July Independence Day is a very special day to remember all the men and women that have given their life and/or limbs to give us the freedoms we have in this country. It s a fun day to celebrate with fireworks and our favorite foods. We should be so thankful for their sacrifices. One of the most popular Patriotic songs of our country is America (My Country Tis of Thee). It was written in 1832 by the Rev. Samuel F. Smith. A couple of the stanzas are as follows: My country, 'tis of Thee, Sweet Land of Liberty Of thee I sing; Land where my fathers died, Land of the pilgrims' pride, From every mountain side Let Freedom ring. Our fathers' God to Thee, Author of Liberty, To thee we sing, Long may our land be bright With Freedom's holy light, Protect us by thy might Great God, our King. The lyrics printed above can inspire us as well as give us a sense of thankfulness for what we have in this country. Our country s Constitution and Bill of Rights give us freedom to worship our God. We are so blessed to have this freedom. There are many people throughout our world that are being persecuted for their belief in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Many people do not tolerate nor understand what Jesus means to these Christians. Let us all pray for all those that are persecuted that God may continue to give them strength in their relationship with him and that they may experience the freedom we have. So, let us, in this month of Independence thank God for the real freedom that we have not just the opportunity to worship God without government interference but the freedom that we have in our relationship with Christ. 4 NURSERY NEEDS TOYS You may be on vacation this summer, but your church isn t! Please be generous in your giving this summer, as you are all year long. WOMEN S BIBLE STUDY The Women s Bible Study will meet on July 17 th and 31 st at 10:00 a.m. in the Fireside Room. They will be starting a new study on a book by Cynthia Heald entitled Becoming a Woman Whose God is Enough. Contact Barbara for more information. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL Our nursery is in need of new or gently used hands-on toys for toddlers through kindergarten aged kids. Our choices right now are pretty limited. Please think about items that are fun and practical. Thank you! DEACONS, COMMISSIONS, AND SESSION MEETINGS The Deacons, Commissions, and Session Meetings for this month have been announced. The Deacons will not meet until September, however, their work as Deacons will continue throughout the summer. The Commissions will meet during the Coffee Fellowship on July 15 th. Look for the announcement in the weekly bulletins regarding where each Commission will meet. The Commissions are: Plant Commission Stewardship & Finance and Building & Operations meets in the Pastor s Office People Commission Membership & Evangelism, Mission, Personnel, and Nominating meets in the Library Program Commission Christian Education and Worship meets in the Sunday School Room So, get something to eat at the Coffee Fellowship and bring it with you to the Commission of your choice. August 6 th -10 th Henderson Presbyterian Church 5:00-7:00 p.m. each day This year s theme is Shipwrecked: Rescued by Jesus. All children are welcome to attend this very exciting week. Also, volunteers are needed to help in all areas. Contact Barbara Gillaspy, VBS Director, for more information or to volunteer. CHRISTIAN EDUCATION Kid s Church will continue over the summer! Kids are asked to sit with their families until the Children s message is given and then move to the Sunday school room where they ll learn more about God in their lives. Adult Sunday School will be studying Luke 15 using the book the Cross and the Prodigal. The study will resume in July with the second half of the book. 4

We will continue Congregational Coffee Fellowship in July and August following the church service on the first Sunday of the month. However, if there is no one signed up for coffee hour on the rest of the Sundays of the month, then there will only be coffee and water. Thank you to everyone who has participated so far this year. You are very much appreciated! 5 Don't forget the Food Bank as they continue to feed the ever-increasing number of hungry folks in our community. You are invited to make a generous financial contribution to this ongoing and vital church ministry. Make your check payable to HPC Food bank or put cash in an envelope marked "Food Bank". The Food Bank no longer needs plastic grocery bags. However, we could use food for pets and toiletries and towels for our homeless friends. SUDOKU Medium

6 OPPORTUNITIES AT HPC Calling all who worship at Henderson Presbyterian Church! We need you to sign up on the clipboards on the end of the hallway leading to the Sanctuary. There are multiple opportunities to be part of your church. Get involved in the life of the church in one of these ways. You can sign up to be a Lay Leader on Sunday morning it s not as hard as you might think! Check with Sally Buck, our Elder in charge of Worship, for more information. for Coffee Fellowship (sign up with several friends if you like) our Coffee Fellowship is a great time to introduce ourselves to someone we don t know or touch base with our friends over something to eat. Note: On the 1 st Sunday of each month there will be a Pot Luck Coffee Fellowship in which all are encouraged to bring some item to share. It will be a great time to taste the various food items from cookies, fruit, vegetables, candies, or other treats prepared or brought by our congregation. Coffee and water will be provided. Finger foods encouraged! to be a Greeter to welcome those who come to worship with us a friendly smile is a great way to be met on a Sunday morning. AN AFFIRMATION God of mercy and peace, stop me in my tracks and give me a tender, compassionate heart to be available to someone less fortunate than I today. Amen Thanks to everyone who has offered to provide for the coffee fellowship on Sunday mornings. Some people have never done the coffee fellowship before, or might not have done it in a while. Here are some Dos and Don ts of coffee fellowship service. DO 1. Bring food (finger foods are encouraged!) 2. Clean up after coffee hour. This includes: washing out coffee pot, dumping tea water, Cleaning up serving plates/utensils if tablecloths and dishcloths are soiled, take home, wash and bring back next week, vacuuming, taking trash from fellowship room and kitchen to the dumpster. DON'T 1. Bring plates, napkins and silverware. These are provided by the church and you do not have to bring your own. 2. Make coffee and tea. 7 May 20, 2018 Session Meeting Henderson Presbyterian Church The session met in quorum in the Sunday School room at Henderson Presbyterian Church at 11:25 am. The meeting was called to order by Moderator, Rev. Lee Styer. He opened the meeting with prayer. Attendees: Teaching Elder Present: Lee Styer; Ruling Elders present: Phyllis Dougherty, Anne Mack, Alice Cain, Craig Sell, Joe Guerra, Karen Chandler and Barbara Gillaspy, Clerk of Session Ruling Elders Excused: Sally Buck Visitors: Craig and Kim Delano Motion to give voice to attendees was made by Phyllis Dougherty and seconded by Craig Sell. The motion was unanimously approved. Devotional: The devotional was given by Lee Styer. He read from These Days. The excerpt from which he read was titled, Believers with one Heart and Soul. Welcome of new members: Craig and Kim Delano were introduced as potential new members to our church. They each spoke of their love of God and their desire to become more involved in our church by becoming members. A motion to receive both Craig and Kim Delano as new members of this church by Re-affirmation of Faith was made by Karen Chandler and seconded by Phyllis Dougherty. The motion was unanimously approved. Clerk Report: A motion was made by Karen Chandler and seconded by Anne Mack to approve the minutes of the April 29, 2018 Session meeting. The motion was unanimously approved. Correspondence: None Pastor s Report: Session training: Book of Order: Chapter 2: The Church and Its Confessions. Prayer Concerns: Anne Mack, Sally Buck, Connie Knight, Craig Sell, Lee Styer and Zep Sylvis. Commission Reports: A. Plant Commission 1) Stewardship and Finance: Craig stated that everything is going well at this time. A motion was made by Karen Chandler and seconded by Joe Guerra to approve the Income and Expense report as presented. The motion was unanimously approved. 2) Building& Operations: Alice discussed issues with doors and locks. We are looking into changing our sanctuary lights to LED lights. We are waiting on information from Presbytery on possible grant money for this project. B. Program Commission 1) Christian Education: Vacation Bible School dates have been set. It will be held Aug from 5:00-7:00 p.m. The theme for this year is Shipwrecked: Rescued by Jesus. 7

8 We need Kids Church information for the summer program. 2) Worship: We are looking into adding a new television at the back of the church. We will check with Presbytery for possible grant money for this new addition. The choir fundraiser will be held June 30 th. The donation money collected will go to the new microphones. We now have a new step at the stage to assist those who need help. C. People Commission 1) Membership & Evangelism: Craig and Kim Delano have been accepted as new members to our church. Lee stated that we have several other people interested in becoming members. He will set up another New Members class. 2) Mission: Phyllis is waiting on the information about our new missionaries. 3) Personnel: Nothing to report. 4) Nominating: Nothing to report. Church and Community Reports Deacons: Minutes and financial statements for March and April received. Scouts: No report. HHH: No report. Daytimers: No report. Food Bank: Financial statement received. A motion to receive the Deacon s minutes and financial reports and the Food Bank s financial statement was made by Karen Chandler and seconded by Phyllis Dougherty. The motion was unanimously approved. Unfinished Business: None New Business: None Next meetings: Commission Meetings: June 17, 2018 during Coffee Fellowship Session Meeting: June 24, 2018 during Coffee Fellowship (Barbara will not be present at this meeting) Motion to adjourn was made by Craig Sell and seconded by Phyllis Dougherty.
