FINDING GOD The splendid magi, all sparkle and dash and solemnity, march right up off the pages of Matthew s Gospel and into our churches today. Matthew alone tells us this grand and seductive story so that we might see the light and know that the child these magi visited is the fulfillment of prophecy, the king of the world that stretches to the magi s home country and beyond, right down the ages to us. We too see and understand anew. Like the magi, our patron saints for this day, we see in the newborn child the king of the universe and light of the world. Like the magi, we find in ourselves a new faith and a new life. Like them, we return to our home by a new route. We are asked to come away from this festive season ourselves renewed and awake to the presence of God among us. 4 Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord January 6, 2019 THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD This day in many parts of the world is called Three Kings Day because of today s Gospel reading about the visit of the three kings or magi to see the child Jesus. The church s name for the day, Epiphany, is based on a Greek word that means to reveal or make visible. Here, the child Jesus is honored not by his own people and certainly not King Herod but by strangers from afar. Only Matthew s Gospel tells their story. There are not many details about the magi, but pious legends have built up around them over the centuries. A modern version is the operetta Amahl and the Night Visitors, which used to be seen on television at this time of year. The Jewish hope for centuries had been that a Messiah, God s Anointed One, would be sent to the Jewish people to save them from their sins and deliver them from their enemies. But here we see that God reveals the Son not just to the Jews but to the Gentiles, people like us who are also seeking a Savior, one whom they recognize with joy. We have expected the Savior all through Advent; we have celebrated the wonderful gift of his birth during Christmas; and now, in this new calendar year, what gifts will we present to him in return? New Year s resolutions often include a decision to work off all those the extra pounds that we have gained from all our feasting and celebrating. That is all well and good as far as it goes, but why not resolve to do something extra for those you love and something more for the community in which you live? Show the love of God that is at work in your heart, or as Saint Francis of Assisi is thought to have said, Preach the gospel at all times. When necessary, use words. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Editor s Note: After a brief hiatus, we resume today excerpts of Pope Francis Laudato Si, his Encyclical message to humanity about global environmental deterioration. Today s excerpt is from Chapter III: Human Roots of the Ecological Crisis. Any approach to an integral ecology, which by definition does not exclude human beings, needs to take account of the value of labor, as Saint John Paul II wisely noted in his Encyclical Laborem Exercens. According to the biblical account of creation, God placed man and woman in the garden he had created (cf. Gen 2:15) not only to preserve it ( keep ) but also to make it fruitful ( till ). Laborers and craftsmen thus maintain the fabric of the world (Sir 38:34). Developing the created world in a prudent way is the best way of caring for it, as this means that we ourselves become the instrument used by God to bring out the potential which he himself inscribed in things: The Lord created medicines out of the earth, and a sensible man will not despise them (Sir 38:4). General Information PARISH REGISTRATION: New parishioners are always welcome. You may register in the parish by calling the parish office. Registration forms can be downloaded from the church website or are available at the church office. Also, please notify us when moving out of the parish or when have a change of address. BAPTISM: Parents should be registered in the parish unless they have made other arrangements with the Pastoral Team. Pre-baptismal class is required for both parents and godparents. To schedule a baptism, arrangements must be made by the parents of the child to be baptized, by calling Terry in the Parish Office at Registration for the Baptismal Preparation Class may also be made by calling Terry. MARRIAGE: Make arrangements by contacting the parish office at Must be registered, active, and contributing members six months prior to the wedding. The couple should meet with the priest or deacon prior to setting a wedding date or making plans for the reception. CONFESSIONS: Saturday immediately following the 5:30pm Mass (except the week before and after a Communal Penance Service or if a wedding or parish function is scheduled.) Also available by appointment. FRIENDSHIP SUNDAY is held the 4th Sunday of each month after weekend Masses. Refreshments are served after these Masses. This is also a great way to socialize with your fellow parishioners.

5 Saint John XXIII Catholic Community The Gospel According to Mark Chapter 10 starts with Jesus arriving in Judea, beyond the Jordan. Crowds form and he teaches them, as was his normal practice. At this point Mark now has an immediate interaction between Jesus and the Pharisees. They ask if it is permissible for a man to divorce his wife. He asks them, What did Moses command you? They answer that Moses permitted separation and divorce. Jesus replies, Because of the hardness of your hearts Moses wrote this commandment for you. But from the beginning of creation male and female he created them. For this cause a man shall leave father and mother, and they shall be two in one flesh. Thus they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together let no man separate. Again we find Jesus and his disciples in a house (remember a house is used by Mark to signify the Church). Jesus says to them, Whoever divorces his wife and marries another, commits adultery against her. And if she, having divorced her husband, marries another, she commits adultery. Jesus turns the tables on male chauvinism by making men and women have the same responsibilities in a society where women have no rights. This story is one of many in which the Pharisees try to trap Jesus. In this case Jesus quotes from the book of Genesis to show that this is the reason God created us to live the ideal of marriage. A key to understanding this in our modern age is the statement What God joined together. So many marriages happen without giving thought about this being before God; this is a major reason why so many do not work. When people marry or take religious vows they do not make a suicide pact, as a famous psychologist, Michael Cavanaugh, taught in seminars he held in the 1960s. Most people do not realize marriage is a true vocation; if they do not incorporate God as part of this bond, the normal struggles become insurmountable and can cause even a good couple to break up. It is unfortunate that in courtship, one only puts his or her best foot forward, so not to lose this love of one s life. Both think their love is different, that his or her partner is perfect, and that he or she will treat them wonderfully. Many a marriage relationship starts out one-sided, and until it becomes two as one, it will not work. The decision to love the person who is there, and not some ideal concept of that person, means to love one s partner as he or she truly is. This will make that love become what it was meant to be a way to help each other grow to his or her full potential. Love cannot be done by one. A one-sided love will only lead to disaster. An extremely selfish person does not deserve to be loved if there is no love in return. Our selfish society makes everything about ourselves and not about caring for any other human being, a contradiction in marriage. What God wants takes a lot of work. Both partners in a marriage should try to help the other grow in their love. If they do, the grace of the Sacrament of Matrimony will help weather any storm. Fr.
