2 OUR LADY OF LORETTO HOMETOWN - OAK LAWN PAGE 2 Fifteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time Dear Parish Family of Our Lady of Loretto, In today s first reading the prophet Amos is taken to task for prophesying against the powerful and wealth of his time for ignoring the disadvantaged and the weak. He is in fact even despised and hated for speaking out, because he was not afraid to tell the wealthy and powerful that they were breaking their covenant with Yahweh. A distinctive feature of the covenant was the interconnection between the relationship to one s neighbor and God. One s true relationship with God depended to a large extent on how one related to and treated one s neighbor. As disciples of Christ, we know that he took this aspect of the covenant one step farther. Jesus proclaimed that our love of God cannot be separated from our love of neighbor. Today we have so many neighbors, friends, and even extended family members, because of modern transportation and instant communications. Today we know what is taking place in every corner of our world. We see and hear about the plight of countless people who are without food, medicine, and shelter. How can we be good and faithful neighbors to all these people? The answer is that we do it by going out to them two-by-two, just as Jesus sent out the disciples in today s gospel. Only the other person walking with us as we reach out to our neighbors is not another disciple, but Christ himself. Only with trust in the power of God and the love of Jesus can we even dream of reaching out to our neighbor s, weather next door or a world away from our front door. Sincerely, Fr. Tom

3 SUNDAY July 15, 2018 PAGE 3 Around the diocese Auxiliary Bishops Pope Francis appointed Father Mark Bartosic, Father Robert Casey and Father Ronald Hicks as auxiliary bishops of the Archdiocese of Chicago on July 3. At the same time, he accepted the resignations of auxiliary bishops George Rassas and Francis Kane, both of whom are past age 75. The new bishops are expected to be ordained to the episcopacy and installed at a Mass at Holy Name Cathedral on Sept. 17. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION INVITATION July is HIV Awareness Month While great progress has been made in the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS and in reducing the number of deaths from the disease, we continue to see new infections. Of the 1.25 million people in the United States who are HIV+, 20% of these do not know that they are infected and are potentially spreading the virus to others. It is estimated that 50,000 new HIV infections occur every year in the United States. Complacency about HIV/AIDS contributes to these numbers. This month offers an opportunity to bring attention to the need to educate at risk populations in your community about the importance of testing and prevention, and seeking care for those who are HIV+.
