From Father Kirby Today in our Gospel reading, the Bread of Life Discourse reaches its culmination. The Lord develops his teaching on eternal life and asks, What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? In this question, he is attesting to his divinity and to the reality of heaven. He teaches us, It is the spirit that gives life. In this assertion, the Lord points to his Resurrection and glorified body (which were realities that no one could have understood at the time). He is showing us that his flesh and blood will be glorified and our feeding on him will be of the spiritual order. In this way, he is answering the challenge about cannibalism and pointing us to a higher reality above the material world. Many abandoned the Lord over this teaching and many still do. Do we understand what we have been given in the Eucharist? Do we understand what we receive in Holy Communion? Some things happening around the parish: We congratulate Paul and Irene Kearns on the renewal of the marriage vows for their 50 th anniversary (picture on front cover) and we wish all our students a safe and educational academic year (picture of student blessing on front cover). Our Pictorial Directory is moving along. More dates with the photographers will be added soon! If you haven t already, please be sure to complete our parish survey on our website. The survey will help me and the Parish Pastoral Council to make decisions for our future together. Your opinion is needed and much appreciated! Our parish Christian Formation programs are all in full swing. It s never too late to join the fun! This weekend, Brianna Pavlish, our parish s youth minister, spoke at all the es and highlighted some of the opportunities available through our middle school and high school youth groups. I pray all our tweens and teens participate in these programs of Christian formation. Due to the sequence of days this month, our First Friday (Sept 7) and First Saturday (Sept 1) will be split. Please note that our Healing will be this coming Saturday at 11:00 AM. And our First Friday and Holy Hour will be the following Friday (Sept 7). This coming Saturday is also my second anniversary as the Parish Priest of Our Lady of Grace. I am deeply grateful to be here. 8 Is the Temple Ready? Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?... Therefore glorify God in your body 1 Corinthians 6: As Catholics we have all heard these words of St. Paul at one time or another in our lives. The questions are first, do we really believe them and second, if we do, how are we responding to them? God made us, each of us, in His image and likeness. Because of this it is only reasonable to believe that He would be comfortable living among us. Before the Fall of Adam, God walked among mankind. In order to bring them back to Him He, in the person of the Son, again trod upon the same soil that we do today. This is a truth that we are called to believe and hold dear to our hearts if we have any hope of our salvation. But if we are to have the Spirit of God, God Himself, living not only among us but within each and everyone of us, what are we doing to prepare his room? Do we really expect Him to walk with us if we look down on others in our pridefulness? Can we expect Him to be our soul mate if we sit in judgment of our brothers and sisters, harboring ill feelings toward them instead of forgiving them any perceived transgressions? Will He be happy to stay with us if we are all about ourselves and not about putting our neighbor and our neighbor s needs before our own? Christ swept out the money changers and sellers from the temple in Jerusalem telling us that the House of His Father must be swept clean if He is expected to reside there. Our temples are no different. We must regularly take stock of our own temples and sweep out all that would be offensive to our loving God. Each morning promise God that you will care for his home away from home. And each night take a look inside that home and see if it is in need of repairs. Oh, and if repairs are needed remember Jesus was a carpenter and His rates are reasonable.
