2 CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN: OCTOBER 26, 2014 THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME On Saturday we celebrate this beautiful feast called the Solemnity of All Saints. It is a celebration of two things first, it is a celebration of all of those who have gone before us who have lived good Christian lives and who are now enjoying the happiness of heaven. It is the celebration of all of God s saints in heaven, both those who are officially declared saints, the canonized, but who likewise enjoy God s glory in heaven our departed loved ones, among them. Today we honor all of them, as if to say one big Thank You to all of the saints for living faithful Christian lives and inspiring us to do the same. But I said that today is a celebration of two things. It is not only a celebration of those who are now in heaven; it is also a celebration of our calling to be with them one day, our calling to be saints. It seems strange to think of ourselves as saints in training, yet that is what we are, that is what the Church wants us to be. Our Holy Father Pope Francis has explained this very well. Let me use his words, the Church offers all the possibility of following a path of holiness, that is the path of the Christian: she brings us to encounter Jesus Christ in the Sacraments, especially in Confession and in the Eucharist; she communicates the Word of God to us, she lets us live in charity, in the love of God for all. The Pope is quite clear: we are all called to saints, nothing less. But the question is, Do we let God help us to be saints? Again the Pope says, Let us ask ourselves then, will we let ourselves be sanctified? Are we a church that calls and welcomes sinners with open arms, that gives courage and hope, or are we a church closed in on herself? Are we a Church where the love of God dwells, where one cares for the other, where one prays for the others? Again the Pope is quite clear. Not only are we called to be saints. We are called, as individuals and as a Church, to help others on their way of being saints too. Some time ago, someone asked Pope Francis who were his favorite saints. The Pope mentioned several of them for special reasons: St. Augustine, the great teacher because the Pope was a teacher for a good part of his life; St. Francis of Assisi, the great saint of the poor, whose name our Holy Father took upon his election as Pope because of his concern for the poor of the world; St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Jesuit Order of which Pope Francis is a member. The Pope has his favorite saints, as we all should have, favorite saints that we turn to for their guidance and help from heaven. But after he mentioned his favorite saints, the Pope reminded people once again of the message of today s feast, that we are all called to be God s saints. Nothing must get in our way of achieving our goal, our goal to be the saints of God. Let me give you Pope Francis words: What can I, a weak fragile sinner, do? God says to you: do not be afraid of holiness, do not be afraid to aim high, to let yourself be loved and purified by God, do not be afraid to let yourself be guided by the Holy Spirit. Let us be infected by the holiness of God. Every Christian is called to sanctity; and sanctity does not consist especially in doing extraordinary things, but in allowing God to act. It is the meeting of our weakness with the strength of His grace, it is having faith in His action that allows us to live in charity, to do everything with joy and humility, for the glory of God and as a service to our neighbor. Let us not lose the hope of holiness, let us follow this path. Do we want to be saints? The Lord awaits us, with open arms; he waits to accompany us on the path to sanctity. Let us live in the joy of our faith, let us allow ourselves to be loved by the Lord. May our Holy Father s words be in our minds and hearts especially during the coming month of November, the Month of All Saints. Father Thomas B. However we encourage you to come to Mass that day to honor all the saints. Our Masses on Saturday will be at 8:00AM, 9:00AM and an additional Mass at 10:30AM. The Mass at 5:30PM on Saturday evening is the Mass for the Sunday obligation. We would to like give a warm St. Theresa welcome to our new Pastor Father Thomas B. Derivan and our new Parochial Vicar Father Joseph Ligory. Please join us on Sunday, October 26th for the 12:15 Mass and then for light refreshments in the school auditorium.

3 THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ST. ALPHONSUS RODRIGUEZ OCTOBER 30 ( ) Tragedy and challenge beset today's saint early in life, but Alphonsus Rodriguez found happiness and contentment through simple service and prayer. Born in Spain in 1533, Alphonsus inherited the family textile business at 23. Within the space of three years, his wife, daughter and mother died; meanwhile, business was poor. Alphonsus stepped back and reassessed his life. He sold the business and, with his young son, moved into his sisters home. There he learned the discipline of prayer and meditation. Years later, at the death of his son, Alphonsus, almost 40 by then, sought to join the Jesuits. He was not helped by his poor education. He applied twice before being admitted. For 45 years he served as doorkeeper at the Jesuits college in Majorca. When not at his post, he was almost always at prayer, though he often encountered difficulties and temptations. His holiness and prayerfulness attracted many to him, including St. Peter Claver, then a Jesuit seminarian. Alphonsus s life as doorkeeper may have been humdrum, but he caught the attention of poet and fellow Jesuit Gerard Manley Hopkins, who made him the subject of one of his poems. Alphonsus died in He is the patron saint of Majorca. We like to think that God rewards the good even in this life. But Alphonsus knew business losses, painful bereavement and periods when God semed very distant. None of his suffering made him withdraw into a shell of self pity or bitterness. Rather, he reached out to others who lived with pain, including enslaved blacks. Among the many notables at his funeral were the sick and poor people whose lives he had touched. May they find such a friend in us! ST. THERESA OUTREACH PROGRAM St. Theresa Outreach Program is sponsoring a Coat Drive. All coats that are donated will go to the toddlers with learning disabilities that attend the BOLD school here on St. Theresa Avenue. We are asking for boys and girls new coats sizes 3T, 4T, 5T 6T & 7T and also hats gloves and scarves. Pleas drop all your donations at the rectory office as soon as possible. Please know that your weekly donation is for the betterment of St. Theresa Parish, for the building up and improvement of our parish. Thanks for all you do! A NOTE FROM FATHER DERIVAN: A number of years ago there was an evening Mass here at St. Theresa s Church on Sundays at 5:00PM. The advantage of having Mass at this hour is that families who are away on Sundays can come to Mass at 5:00PM perhaps after visiting relatives or friends. I brought this matter up to the Parish Council and others and they agreed with me that there was value in resuming the 5:00PM Sunday Mass. Therefore beginning on Sunday, November 2 we will have a 5:00PM Sunday Mass. We will do this on a trial basis during November and December. At the end of that time, we will examine whether the 5:00PM Sunday Mass is serving our parishioners and whether it should be continued on a permanent basis. I welcome your comments on this. Please give this information to neighbors and friends who may benefit from having the 5:00PM Sunday Mass. Please note that we shall continue our other weekend Masses: Saturday, 5:00Pm and 6:30PM (Spanish); Sunday, 7:30AM, 9:00AM (Italian), 10:30AM (Family) and 12:15PM (Choir). OUR LADY, STAR OF THE SEA One of the most beautiful titles of Our Blessed Mother is the title Star of the Sea. Just as sailors once depended upon the night sky to find their way, we can depend upon our Blessed Mother in the stormy seas of life. St. Bernard of Clairvaux (12th century) tells us: If the winds of temptation arise; If you are driven upon the rocks of tribulation look to the star, call on Mary; If you are tossed upon the waves of pride, of ambition, of envy, of rivalry, look to the star, call on Mary. Should anger, or avarice, or fleshly desire violently assail the frail vessel of your soul, look at the star, call upon Mary. This beautiful poem, written by an anonymous author, expresses our love for Mary, Star of the Sea. When for me the sun is setting at the close of life s brief day; when my little ship is nearing port in yonder crystal bay; then, O my beloved Mother, stretch thy kind hand out to me, shield me, till my feet have touch d the shore sand of eternity. When my strength begins to vanish, and earth s memories to fade; when my friends stand sad and silent, powerless to give me aid; then, my beloved Mother, hold my trembling hand in thine, till my eyes shall see the steeples of the Holy city shine. When at last my weary spirit seeks admission to thy throne, when my lips in anxious longing for thy gracious blessing moan! Then, O thrice beloved Mother, open wide thy home and heart, and let me, thy child, dwell ever, where thou Queen and Mother art. Every Saturday before the 5:00PM Mass, the petitions entered into the book for that week are brought up to the altar of the Blessed Mother, where they remain for all the weekend Masses.
