THERESA, BRONX DECEMBER 1, 2013 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT Central to our Catholic Faith is a conviction that human personality is sacred and that human life has meaning both now and forever. That is one thing that makes the Christian Gospel the most redemptive force on earth it believes in and proclaims the eternal worthiness of human life. So we have schools and hospitals and orphanages and rest homes; we send out missionaries we feed the poor; we befriend the lonely and forgotten. Why this tremendous expenditure of time and effort and money? It is because we believe that all people are the most important thing on the face of the earth. The highest mountain in New York State is Mt. Marcy. It was named after William Marcy, who in his youth was regarded as the worst boy in the town of Southbridge, Massachusetts. More than once, he and his friends had run the school teacher out of town. In his later years the town gave a reception for the Honorable William Marcy. The old school teacher, Salem Towne, was there. From the podium Marcy points him out and says, This is the man who made me. When I was a youth, I thought everyone was against me; no one saw any good in me. He was the first person who ever believed in me. Whatever merit or distinction I have attained, I owe to him. Marcy was a United States Senator, Secretary of State, and three times governor of New York. They named the highest mountain in the state after him. When he died more than 100,000 people were in his funeral procession. It all went back to someone who believed in the possibilities of the human personality. I know nothing about Salem Towne, but I would be tremendously surprised if he were not a Christian, holding to the eternal truth of the sacredness of the human personality. How could a man discover such values in a boy and help to bring them out, if life were just a game that we play for a little while? Our Catholic faith with all its God-given values and principles lead to open doors, a universe, not of blind alleys and dead-end streets, but of open doors. That is how we, Catholics, see life from conception to the grave. Granted there are problems we have not solved and questions we cannot answer, but these are a part of the adventure we call human life. They too are open doors, granted that to some death seems to be a red light, but red lights turn green. When the time comes for each of us, we will pass through that intersection with only a brief delay. We adults have the key that will open many doors for our children and young adults. That key is our belief that Jesus has the words of eternal life. With all the values and principles that the word of God has revealed to us through Jesus, our children can truly realize their full potential. As Catholic adults parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, teachers, coaches let us not short change our children. Teach them what Jesus taught you. Teach them our Catholic values and principles. With deep confidence let us commit ourselves to the task of always teaching our children about Jesus, knowing that it is all most worthwhile. Perhaps this can be our Advent project. ST. THERESA S GIVING TREE The Giving Tree is our parish opportunity for sharing during this Christmas season. The tree will have gift tags hanging on it and will be located at the Altar of St. Joseph. The gifts are collected for the needy. We ask you to remove a gift tag, purchase the item (new items only) and return it UNWRAPPED with the gift tag on it and place it under the tree. The tree will be set up on November 23 rd. CERTIFICATES OF ELIGIBILITY FOR SPONSORS To act as a sponsor for Baptism and Confirmation you must obtain a sponsor certificate which means: YOU ARE A REGISTERED CHURCH GOING PARISHIONER. The certificate will only be given if you are registered for at least 3 months and longer. Please no exceptions. Thank you. ST. THERESA OUTREACH PROGRAM St. Theresa Outreach Program is sponsoring a Coat and Toy Drive. All coats that are donated will go to the toddlers with learning disabilities that attend the BOLD school here on St. Theresa Avenue. We are asking for boys and girls new coats sizes 3T thru 5T and also hats gloves and scarves. Pleas drop all your donations at the rectory office as soon as possible. Also we are sponsoring a Toy Drive for children at St. Joseph School for the Deaf. We are in need of new unwrapped toys for boys and girls ages 5 thru 14. Our goal is to donate 100 toys so that every child will receive a gift. Please help us reach this goal. All toys can be dropped off at the church or rectory. PETITION BOOK Have you noticed our Petition Book in the vestibule of the Church? Every Saturday before the 5:00PM Mass, the petitions entered into the book for that week are brought up to the altar of the Blessed Mother, where they remain for all the weekend Masses. Please pray for these intentions.

3 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE On Thursday, December 12 th at 5:30AM we will sing Las Mañanitas a Mexican tradition of singing birthday songs to Our Lady of Guadalupe. A traditional Mexican breakfast will be served after the Mañanitas in the large rectory meeting room. Come celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Thursday, December 12 th at 6:30PM, with Mass in Spanish and Mariachi music. After the Mass we will continue our celebration with delicious food, traditional dance and music in the school auditorium. NUESTRA SEÑORA DE GUADALUPE El Jueves 12 de diciembre a las 5:30AM cantaremos las Mañanitas a nuestra Madre de Guadalupe. Después serviremos desayuno tradicional Mexicano. No falten. Ven a celebrar la fiesta de Nuestra Senore de Guadalupe el Jueves 12 de diciembre a las 6:30PM con la Santa Misa y Mariachis. Después de Misa continuaremos nuestra celbración con comida, danzas y música en el gimnasio de la escuela. Our Eucharistic Adoration is on Wednesdays at 1:15 2:15PM and then again at 7:00-8:00PM. The new times will allow more parishioners to participate in the Holy Hour. We will be praying for our own intentions and for our children and grandchildren. As part of our Advent waiting we celebrate Christ's coming by making an Advent wreath and lighting its candles to remind us of the hope Christ brings to the world. The round shape of the wreath reminds us of the unbroken love of God. The green branches speak of new life, and the candles proclaim the light that came into the world with Jesus Christ. Today we light the first candle. The flickering of the flame reminds us that our waiting is a time of both contemplation and action. St. Theresa School wants to help you shop for Christmas The Home School Association is selling a KidStuff coupon book filled with hundreds of valuable coupons - Macys, Dress Barn, Modell s, movie tickets, restaurants, Toy-r-Us and supermarkets just to mention a few vendors. Cost: $25.00 and half goes to St. Theresa School. Stop by the School or Rectory to purchase a coupon book! Help Us Raise Money with Little or no Effort: We are collecting Box Tops for Education. If you cut the box tops off your items and bring them to church on Sunday just leave them in the sacristy and we will make sure we get them. For each box top collected we receive 10 cents. Do you shop at Target, Shoprite, Stop and Shop, Pathmark or Food Town sign up on their website or call the school office for help. Every time you shop they donate a percentage to the school at no cost to you! DONATIONS FOR SANCTUARY LAMP Over the past few years many people have asked how they can memorialize their loved ones. Of course we have the Tree of Life which is a permanent memorial, but then there are those of us who want to do something on a weekly basis. Over the past few years we began taking donations for Altar Bread in memory of our loved ones, and each week their name and the name of the donor is posted in the bulletin. We are also taking donations for the burning of the Sanctuary Lamp. If you are interested in memorializing your loved one in any way, please call the Rectory and reserve a week. We hope this will help those who want to remember their loved ones in any of these ways. Please continue to share the peace and joy of our faith with others. There are so many out there that are in the need of Jesus. Can you be for all of us a living sign to all our parishioners and neighbors, and tell them for us we need them and love them. Someone may hear and accept the invitation from you and return home to worship the Lord with us. So please invite a friend, relative, or neighbor to come with you to Church next Sunday. God will do the rest. Let us share our treasure of faith with others. REMINDER TO ALTAR SERVERS Please be sure to check your schedules each week for the Mass you are assigned to serve. If you cannot serve the Mass you have been assigned please make sure you find a replacement. When you are at Mass on Saturday or Sunday please check in the sacristy to see if we need your help serving Mass. FIRST FRIDAY This Friday December 6 th is First Friday we will have our Holy Hour from 7:30-8:30PM and the church will remain open until 10:00PM for private adoration.
