2 CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX NOVEMBER 17, 2013 THIRTY - THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Last weekend I watched a TV program on Fox News called My Hope America. It was the reflection of Dr. Billy Graham. I thought the reflection was wonderful. This brought me back to an article I read a number of years ago that I thought was also wonderful. So I thought it is worthwhile to again pass it onto you. Billy Graham s daughter was being interviewed on the Early Show about the September 11 th terrorist attack and Jane Clayson asked he How could God let something like this happen? Ann Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said, I believe that God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we ve been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman that He is, I believe that He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand that He leave us alone? So let s see I think it started when Madeline Murray O Hare complained she didn t want any prayer in our schools, and we said OK. Then, someone said you better not read the Bible in school the Bible that says thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself. And we said, OK. Then, someone said teachers and principals better not discipline our children when they misbehave. And the school administrators said no faculty member in this school better touch a student when they misbehave, because we don t want any bad publicity, and we surely don t want to be sued. And we said, OK. Then, some wise school board member said, since boys will be boys, and they re going to do it anyway, let s give our sons all the condoms they want, so they can have all the fun they desire, and we won t have to tell parents that they got them at school. And we said, OK. Then, some of our top elected officials said it doesn t matter what we do in private as long as we do our jobs. And agreeing with them, we said it doesn t matter to me what anyone, including the President, does in private as long as I have a job and the economy is good. And then, the entertainment industry said, let s make TV shows and movies that promote profanity, violence, and illicit sex. And let s record music that encourages rage, drugs, murder, suicide, and satanic themes. And we said it s just entertainment. It has no adverse effect and nobody takes it seriously anyway, so go right ahead. Now we re asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don t know right from wrong, and why it doesn t bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves. Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. Don t you think it has a great deal to do with We Reap What We Sow? Then, there was the student who wrote Dear God, Why didn t you save the little girl killed in her classroom? Sincerely, Concerned Student. And the reply Dear Concerned Student, I am not allowed in schools. Sincerely, God. ST. THERESA S GIVING TREE The Giving Tree is our parish opportunity for sharing during this Christmas season. The tree will have gift tags hanging on it and will be located at the Altar of St. Joseph. The gifts are collected for the needy. We ask you to remove a gift tag, purchase the item (new items only) and return it UNWRAPPED with the gift tag on it and place it under the tree. The tree will be set up on November 23 rd. OFFICE OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS ARCHDIOSESE OF NEW YORK Did you know That the Education Investment Tax Credit would help not only religious school children, but also private and public school children would benefit by generating funds for private scholarships and public schools? This credit also would provide funds for public and private school teachers to purchase materials for their classes. 3 THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME The Archdiocese of New York has been blessed with many parishes which have served millions of people for more than 200 years. Now, given changing demographics, the increasing needs of the parishioners, the anticipation of fewer priests to serve the archdiocese, diminishing resources, and the fact that the archdiocese, has more parishes than are needed in some areas. We may need to add and /or strengthen parishes in other areas, we are called to consolidate resources so that we can truly and in the best way possible meet the needs of Catholics who are longing to be nurtured by the richness of the Church s sacraments and traditions. As we at St. Theresa look to the future, new models for parishes are needed! In light of this we are inviting all parishioners to join together at a TOWN HALL MEETING to take place on MONDAY EVENING, NOVEMBER 18, AT 7:30PM in the SCHOOL AUDITORIUM. THANK YOU!!! PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO ATTEND!!! ST. THERESA OUTREACH PROGRAM St. Theresa Outreach Program is sponsoring a Coat and Toy Drive. All coats that are donated will go to the toddlers with learning disabilities that attend the BOLD school here on St. Theresa Avenue. We are asking for boys and girls new coats sizes 3T thru 5T and also hats gloves and scarves. Pleas drop all your donations at the rectory office as soon as possible. Also we are sponsoring a Toy Drive for children at St. Joseph School for the Deaf. We are in need of new unwrapped toys for boys and girls ages 5 thru 14. Our goal is to donate a 100 toys so that every child will receive a gift. Please help us reach this goal. All toys can be dropped off at the church or rectory. ST. ANTHONY S RELICS VISIT NEW YORK Friday, December 13 th St. Lucy s Church 833 Mace Avenue (at Bronxwood Avenue) Veneration at 4:00PM Mass at 6:00PM The Franciscan Friars invite you to join them in welcoming St. Anthony of Padua on the occasion of the 750 th Anniversary of the Discovery of St. Anthony s Relics by St. Bonaventure. St. Anthony will be visiting us in the form of a precious relic from his Basilica in Padua, Italy. The relic will be accompanied by one friar from the Messenger of St. Anthony in Padua. OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE On Thursday, December 12 th at 5:30AM we will sing Las Mañanitas a Mexican tradition of singing birthday songs to Our Lady of Guadalupe. A traditional Mexican breakfast will be served after the Mañanitas in the large rectory meeting room. Come celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Thursday, December 12 th at 6:30PM, with Mass in Spanish and Mariachi music. After the Mass we will continue our celebration with delicious food, traditional dance and music in the school auditorium.
