2 FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN: CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX OCTOBER 5, 2014 TWENTY-SEVENTH IN ORDIANRY TIME The month of October is observed as the month of Our Blessed Mother Mary. It is also observed as the Month of Respect for Life. There is a beautiful connection there. Mary, the Mother of Life, helps us to be mindful of the gift of life during this month and throughout our lives. The Mother of Life helps us to appreciate the preciousness of life, the life that she bore within her womb, the life of every child in every other mother s womb throughout the world. As Pope Francis has said, We have a Mother who always intercedes for the life of her children. As we observe Respect Life Month, of course our thoughts and prayers turn to the unborn, the innocent children whose lives are taken each day through the tragedy of abortion. Anyone who has held a newborn child understands how precious life is. God has given parents the beautiful privilege of joining Him in creation, in bringing a new person into this world, loved by God and destined for eternal life in heaven. How can anyone say that this newborn child is not precious? How can anyone say that this child, just a few weeks before he or she was born, could be justifiably aborted? How can we even think that way? When our Holy Father Pope Francis was in Brazil last6 year, he said this: We must never, never allow the throwaway culture to enter our hearts! We must never allow the throwaway culture to enter our hearts, because we are brothers and sisters. No one is disposable! Let us always remember this: only when we are able to share do we become truly rich; everything that is shared is multiplied! Think of the multiplication of the loaves by Jesus! The measure of the greatness of a society is found in the way it treats those most in need, those who have nothing apart from their poverty. The Pope was speaking those words to challenge the young people gathered in Brazil for World Youth Day to accept their role of being a church of service, a church that does not simply speak about helping others, but is actively doing so through the works of charity. Every work of charity is an act respecting life. To serve life at any point in a person s existence is to serve the Lord who is the Lord of all life. Pope Francis challenged those young people-and all of us-to do our part in proclaiming what his predecessor Pope St. John Paul II called the Gospel of Life. Listen to Pope Francis words: I would also like to tell you that the Church, the advocate of justice and defender of the poor in the face of intolerable social and economic inequalities which cry to heaven, wishes to offer her support for every initiative that can signify genuine development for every person and for the whole person. Dear friends, it is certainly necessary to give bread to the hungry-this is an act of justice. But there is also a deeper hunger, the hunger for a happiness that only God can satisfy, the hunger for dignity. There is neither real promotion of the common good nor real human development when there is ignorance of the fundamental pillars that govern a nation, its non-material goods: life, which is a gift of God, a value always to be protected and promoted; the family, the foundation of coexistence and a remedy against social fragmentation; integral education, which cannot be reduced to the mere transmission of information for purposes of generating profit; health, which must seed the integral well-being of the person, including the spiritual dimension, essential for human balance and healthy coexistence; security, in the conviction that violence can be overcome only by changing human hearts. During this Respect Life month, let us accept Pope Francis challenge. Let us be true proponents of life, defending the rights of the unborn, the poor, the oppressed, the forgotten. May we proclaim the Gospel of Life by serving others in Christ s name. That is our greatest challenge. And with the help of Mary, Mother of Life, we will all be ready to accept that challenge and be people of life. ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF CARDINAL COOKE: This Monday, October 6th we observe the 31st anniversary of the death of our beloved Terence Cardinal Cooke, now honored as Servant of God, the first step in the process of his being declared a saint. We continue to be inspired by the gentleness and holiness of Cardinal Cooke, who honored our church with many visits. Please pray that he will one day be canonized as a saint. You may also wish to join the Cardinal Cooke Guild which works for his canonization. 3 TWENTY SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 11 ST. JOHN XXII ( ) Although few people had as great an impact on the 20th century as Pope John XXII, he avoided the limelight as much as possible. Indeed, one writer has noted that his ordinariness seems one of his most remarkable qualities. The firstborn son of a farming family in Sotto Il Monte, near Bergamo in northern Italy, Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was always proud of his down-to-earth roots. He studied in Bergamo s diocesan seminary and was ordained in After his ordination, Angelo returned to Rome for canon law studies. He soon worked as his bishop s secretary, Church history teacher in the seminary, and as publisher of the diocesan paper. His service as a stretcher-bearer for the Italian army during World War I gave him a firsthand knowledge of war. In 1921 he was made national director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. He also found time to teach patristics, the study of the Church fathers, at a seminary in Rome. In 1925 he became a papal diplomat, serving first in Bulgaria, then in Turkey, and finally in France ( ). During World War II, he became well acquainted with Orthodox Church leaders. With the help of Germany s ambassador to Turkey, Archbishop Roncalli helped save an estimated 24,000 Jewish people. Named a cardinal and appointed patriarch of Venice in 1953, he was finally a residential bishop. A month short of entering his 78th year, he was elected pope, taking the name John after his father and the two patrons of Rome s cathedral, St. John Lateran. He took his work very seriously but not himself.. His wit soon became proverbial, and he began meeting with political and religious leaders from around the world. In 1962 he was deeply involved in efforts to resolve the Cuban missile crisis. His most famous encyclicals were Mother and Teacher (1961) and Peace on Earth (1963). Pope John XXII enlarged the membership in the College of Cardinals and made it more international. At his Address at the opening of the Second Vatican Council, he criticized the prophets of doom who in these modern times see nothing but prevarication and ruin. Pope John XXII set a tone for the Council when he said, The church has always opposed...errors. Nowadays, however, the Spouse of Christ prefers to make use of the medicine of mercy rather than that of severity. On his deathbed he said: It is not that the gospel has changed; it is that we have begun to understand it better. Those who have lived as long as I have...were enabled to compare different cultures and traditions, and know that the moment has come to discern the signs of the times, to seize the opportunity and to look far ahead. Good Pope John died on June 3, St. John Paul II beautified him in 2000, and Pope Francis canonized him in Usually a saint s feast day is on the day of his death, but Pope Francis selected October 11 at St. John XXIII s feast day, the day of his opening of the Second Vatican Council. Angelo Roncalli cooperated with God s providence made him the ideal person to promote a new dialogue with Protestant and Orthodox Christians, as well as with Jews and Muslims. In the sometimes noisy crypt of St. Peter s Basilica, many people became silent on seeing the simple tomb of Pope John XXII, grateful for the gift of his life and holiness. After the beatification, his tomb was moved into the basilica itself. In 1903, young Angelo wrote in his spiritual journal: From the saints I must take the substance, not the accidents of their virtues. I am not St. Aloysius, nor must I seek holiness in his particular way, but according to the requirements of my own nature, my own character and the different conditions of my life. I must not be the dry, bloodless reproduction of a model, however perfect. God desires us to follow the examples of the saints by absorbing the vital sap of their virtues and turning it into our own life-blood, adapting it to our own individual capacities and particular circumstances. If St. Aloysius had been as I am, he would have become holy in a different way (Journal of a Soul).. SACRAMENT OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK REMINDER TO ALTAR SERVERS: Please be sure to check your schedules each week for the Mass you are assigned to serve. If you cannot serve the Mass you have been assigned please make sure you find a replacement. When you are at Mass on Saturday or Sunday please check in the sacristy to see if we need your help serving Mass. On Saturday, October 18, we will have a special 12:00PM Mass with the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. All who experience sickness or old age are invited to receive this beautiful sacrament. In past years this sacrament was received only in danger of death. Now the Church extends this sacrament to anyone who seeks Christ s healing grace because of any sickness, physical or otherwise, or old age. We invite you to come for the celebration of this beautiful sacrament on October 18 at noon.. Please bring this to the attention of relatives and friends who may wish to receive God s healing grace in the Anointing. Clement XI extended the feast to the universal Church in The development of the rosary has a long history. First, a practice developed of praying 150 Our Fathers in imitation of the 150 Psalms. Then there was a parallel practice of praying 150 Hail Mary s. Soon a mystery of Jesus life was attached to each Hail Mary. Though Mary s giving the rosary to St. Dominic is recognized as a legend, the development of this prayer form owes much to the followers of St. Dominic. One of them, Alan de la Roche, was known as the apostle of the rosary. He founded the first Confraternity of the Rosary in the 15th century. In the 16th century the rosary was developed to its present form with the 15 mysteries (joyful, sorrowful and glorious). In 2002, Pope John Paul II added the Mysteries of Light to this devotion.
