2 CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX MAY 5, 2013 SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER In one of the letters of St. Paul, we read: Let the Word of Christ, rich as it is, dwell in you. In wisdom made perfect, instruct and admonish one another. Sing gratefully to God from your hearts in psalms, hymns and inspired songs. Whatever you do, whether in speech or in action, do it in the name of the Lord Jesus. The gift of speech is to be used to praise and worship God, and to build up the people of God. It is to be used to create joy and laughter and song. It is meant to persuade us in those things that are for our good and for the glory of God. It is to be used to encourage one another in weakness, to support one another in difficulty, to express to one another our love and care and concern. The gift of speech can bring about forgiveness and reconciliation. Every time we open our mouths it should be to bless and to praise, to thank God for all He does for us and our family, as well as to bring about wholeness in one another for the glory and honor of God and to express our gratitude to God for all His blessings in our lives. Yet so many people, and at times you and I, abuse this gift of God by using it in a way never intended by God. The Bible is full of admonition against evil talk. We are exhorted by God to guard against using it for gossip or slander, not to sin by lying, by rash judgement, resentment, bitterness, envy, jealousy, malice, obscenity, anger, or blasphemy. Because of the pressure to conform in our society, because of the patterns of conversation that we have grown up with over the years, we are no longer sensitive to all the ways we can sin, all the ways we misuse the gift of speech. There is a very clear message from the Scriptures for us to consider. There are certain patterns of speaking and acting that have to be looked at by each and every one of us and then we have to do something about it right now. Once we have become the followers of Jesus true Catholics we have to make decisions to put these old bad habits of speech aside. We need to work at correcting our patterns of speech, in order to build up the Body of Christ, our family, rather than tear it down. We need to guard our tongues and our lips. We need to put a guard over our minds and emotions. This is necessary not only to protect what we say but to guard what comes into our minds as well. Daily we ought to offer our tongues, our mouths, our lips, our minds to the Lord whom we receive on our tongues and ask Him to anoint them with the oil of goodness and justice so that our speech may nourish life within our family and among our friends, and in our parish and draw others into a deeper bond of love for one another and for God. Perhaps we can make this our task in this the remaining months of the Year of Faith so that we can truly sing the praises of God with our renewed speech and work with Him to build up the People of God. Please remember that this weekly increase is most needed for St. Theresa in building and improving our beloved parish. We are grateful to all of you whose generous response has enabled us to better meet our weekly expenses. However we are still far from that goal. Our neighboring parishes are receiving weekly Sunday contributions that exceed our weekly Sunday contributions by $2,000 each week! So we ask that you please continue to help us in order to keep St. Theresa such a vital, loving, growing parish. If you have not yet increased your weekly Sunday contribution, please pray about what more you can give. We really need your weekly help. St. Theresa s School and Parish would like to congratulate our Principal Mrs. Josephine Fanelli who will be one of the Honorees at the 115 th Annual Chippewa Dinner Dance at the Villa Barone Manor on Thursday, June 6, 2013, for her dedication and good work for our school and community. The Food Pantry is in need of food to replenish the pantry. We are asking for tomato sauce, pasta, box or can juices, soups, cake mixes, frostings, oatmeal, cereal, crackers, rice, tuna fish, canned non-perishable goods, peanut & jelly. We would like to distribute the food to those families who are on our food pantry list. God bless you for all of your kindness. NO GLASS JARS PLEASE. ST. THERESA S HOME SCHOOL ASSOCIATION BINGO St. Theresa s Home School Association will be having Bingo on Friday, May 17, 2013 in the school cafeteria. The doors will open at 7:00PM. This Bingo is for ADULTS ONLY. Please bring a few friends and have some fun and with a little luck you could be a winner.

3 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION Registration for Religious Education (CCD classes) is open for the school year. Families who have children currently enrolled will receive re-registration forms in the mail. SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER NEW FAMILIES Parents of children of the parish who attend public school should enroll their children in religion classes beginning in first grade. Please call Mrs. McCarrick in the Religious Education Office to request an application. New families are welcome in all grade levels. St. Theresa Religious Education direct number: PELHAM BAY TAXPAYERS The Pelham Bay Taxpayers are having a meeting Tuesday, May 14, Refreshments will be at 7:00PM and the meeting will follow at 7:30PM. There will be two guest speakers, Sen. Jeff Klein and Councilman Jimmy Vacca. Please try to attend this meeting and voice any concerns you may have about our neighborhood and community. FUND RAISING The Hispanic Ministry of St. Theresa is sponsoring a Food Sale to celebrate Mother s Day and to help raise funds for the celebration of the feast of our heavenly Mother, Our Lady of Guadalupe, on Saturday, May 18 at 7:30 PM in the gymnasium of the school. CERTIFICATES OF ELIGIBILITY FOR SPONSORS To act as a sponsor for Baptism and Confirmation you must obtain a sponsor certificate which means: YOU ARE A REGISTERED CHURCH GOING PARISHIONER. GOING BACK TO THE 80 S It s that time again for us to come together as a parish family to celebrate and enjoy one another s company at our Annual Card Party Going Back to the 80 s. The Card Party will take place on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at 7:00PM in the Villa Barone Manor. The price of a ticket is $50.00 per person which includes an Open Bar, Dinner, Dessert and Coffee. There will be wonderful prizes so bring lots of relatives and friends for a truly fun-filled night out! Tickets are on sale now in the School from 9:00AM to 2:00PM and in the Rectory from 8:30AM to 4:30PM. Please remember that the success of our Card Party rests largely upon the support of all our wonderful school parents and dedicated parishioners. You are always there when we need you. St. Theresa s Parish is proud to announce that Deacon Sandro Leyton will be ordained a Priest with the Archdiocese of New York on Saturday, May 25, 2013 and will be celebrating his first Mass on Sunday, May 26 at 2:30PM here at St. Theresa Church. Also we are proud to announce that our parish seminarian Richard Marrano will be ordained a Deacon on September 2, 2013 and with God s help he will be ordained a priest in May Next Sunday May 12 th is Mother s Day all our Mass intentions for that day will be in Honor of all Mother s, Living and Deceased. If you would like a Mother s Day Mass Remembrance envelope they will be in the back of the Church. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Eucharistic Adoration takes place every Wednesday afternoon from 4:30 to 5:30PM and on First Friday from 7:30 to 10PM.
