2 C S. T, B FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN: When we come to church next Sunday, we will begin a new Church year. You will see the purple vestments, the sign of preparation. You will see the wreath with the four candles. You will see Advent. But that is next week, the beginning of the new Church year. Today we celebrate an ending, the ending of the Church s of grace and we celebrated it with this beautiful Feast of Jesus Christ Our King. The Church has honored Jesus as our King for two thousand years. St. John in the gospel today tells us that Jesus proclaimed Himself a King, but a different kind of King than Pontius Pilate or, for that matter, anyone else expected. Jesus said, My Kingdom is not of this world. People had expected an earthly King, a warrior, a mighty conqueror. Jesus wasand isnot that kind of King. He proclaims Himself the King of truth. That is why He was born, that is why He came into the world, to testify to the truth and anyone who belongs to the truth hears the voice of Christ the King. When St. John speaks of truth, he means the truth of God, not human understanding. Jesus is the King of His Father s truth, the King who proclaims that this world belongs to His Father, the King who invites us to join Him in loving and serving the Father of us all. If you belong to God s truth, you understand that. You hear His voice. If you belong to God s truth, Jesus is indeed your King. This Feast of Christ the King was instituted by Pope Pius XI in Pope Pius saw the dangers of society. He saw how people were being more and more concerned with earthly things that they were forgetting heavenly things. He saw the rise of secularism, the belief that the here and now is all that counts. He saw the rise of Communism and the belief that human beings only exist for the state. Pope Pius wanted to steer the Church and the world back to Christ. Therefore he gave the Church this Feast of Christ the King, hoping, as he said, that we would gain strength and courage as we are reminded that Christ must reign in our hearts, our understanding, our will and our life. hat was 91 years ago. Our world is still faced with the many dangers that Pope Pius warned about. There is still secularism, and sadly that affects all of us. We become so caught up in material things, particularly in our holiday preparations, that we can quickly forget about spiritual things, about making our hearts a throne for Christ the King. Our world has seen the fall of Communism, but there are still political systems that threaten our worldthere is the growing threat of terrorism which we know so well. We need this Feastday more than ever. We need to be reminded that Jesus Christ is our King, the King who reigns in the hearts of all who accept God s truth, the King who alone can show this world happiness and peace. We are the servants of Christ the King. What does that mean for us? Let me mention three things. It means first and foremost that we put Christ in the first place in our hearts and lives. Every day, let us dedicate our lives to serve Christ and Him alone. Let us ask His help not to get so caught up in material things that we forget Him. When you make your Morning Offering, as we all should do every morning putting our whole day in God s hands, when you make that Morning Offering, consciously tell the Lord that you are putting your life in His hands, in the kinds of the King who loves you. Second, make Christ the King of your home. Children and grandchildren should see that Jesus Christ truly reigns as King in their homes. There are many other competitors for that position in our children s lives. Money or the latest clothes or the newest electronics can claim greater attention from our children than God s love. Show your families that Jesus is your King. May His Cross or the picture of His Sacred Heart be duly honored in your home. Honor Christ the King through family prayer and through family works of charity, as your serve your King together. Finally, give example to others, showing them that Christ is your King not just in word but in deed. Never underestimate the power of your good example. Do not hide your faith. Let people see the cross around your neck, the holy card on your desk, the kindness in your daily action. Do not be afraid to tell them that Jesus Christ is the King of your life. Pontius Pilate had Christ the King right before him. He failed to recognize Him. Let us never fail to recognize our King. Let us never fail to love and serve our King. Let us never forget to hear the voice of our King, calling us to truth and calling us to eternal life. Father Thomas B. Derivan THANKSGIVING DAY: Thursday is Thanksgiving Day, as we join in thanking God for all His blessings to our country, our families and ourselves. Thank you for sharing your Advent and Christmas with those in need.

4 NOVEMBER 20, 2016 THE LITURGICAL YEAR: WHAT DOES EACH SEASON MEAN? Adventmeans a coming or arrival. Next week is the beginning of the liturgical year. We use the season of Advent to prepare for the Christmas celebration. The scripture stories during this time tell us of Mary and the prophets. They waited for the Christ Child to be born in the first coming of Jesus. Today we wait for the second coming of Jesus. Christmasmeans Mass of Christ. This is a celebration of the coming of the promised Savior, Jesus Christ. The scripture stories in the Christmas season tell us about Jesus and his early years, from his birth to his baptism by John the Baptist. Lentmeans spring. We celebrate the season of Lent in early spring. We also remember that Lent leads us to new life, just as spring brings new life to the world. During Lent we prepare for the Triduum and Easter celebrations. We pray, fast, sacrifice, and give alms (money for the poor) as we seek to change our lives and become a holy people of God. Triduummeans three days. The three days of the Triduum are Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. This is our greatest celebration of the year. On Holy Thursday, we remember that Jesus gave us himself in the Eucharist at the Last Supper and that he promised to remain with us always. On Good Friday we remember that Jesus reconciled all people with God the Father through his sacrifice on the cross. On Holy Saturday, we remember that Jesus rose from the dead to bring us all everlasting life. At the Great Vigil on Holy Saturday night, we wait in darkness by the tomb for the new light, the new life, of Easter. Eastermeans spring, festival of the dawn. We continue to celebrate! When Jesus rose from the dead, it was a new day for God s People of the Old Covenant. Now his people would live by a New Covenant. To celebrate our new beginning with God, we received a new day or feast, the Lord s Day, Sunday. We celebrate the Easter season for fifty days until Pentecost Sunday. On Pentecost we remember that Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to the apostles. Pentecost Sunday is the birthday of the Church! Ordinary Timemeans orderly, regular. This season is also called the season of Pentecost, and it comes after the great celebrations of Christmas and Easter. This season is orderly because we live guided by the teachings of Jesus as handed down through the apostles. We grow in God s grace, strengthened by the Holy Spirit. Like the apostles, we spread the good news of God s love to all we meet. In addition, this season is regular because we live every moment as a people who hope in a risen Christ. We live our life in faith, not just on special days, but every day. We trust in God, not just when it s easy, but when it s hard, too. All these things together are the ordinary work of the Church, and the ordinary work of each member of the Church. Celebrate the Seasons! The colors remind us how to celebrate each season. Violet This purplish color Reminds us to change our lives by being more faithful and loving to God and his people. Our loving sacrifices are called acts of penance. You will see this color during the seasons of Advent and Lent. Rose This pink color is sometimes used to Reminded us to be joyful as we wait for the great feast we are preparing to celebrate. You will see this color on the third Sunday of Advent as we wait for Christmas and on the fourth Sunday of Lent as we wait for Easter. Red This color reminds us to the fire of God s love. It also reminds us of the many people who sacrificed their lives for that love. Jesus sacrificed himself, and many saints sacrificed themselves. You will see the color red on Passion Sunday, which is also called Palm Sunday. You will also see it on feast days of the apostles and martyrs, on Good Friday, and on Pentecost Sunday. White This color reminds us to celebrate with joy. It also reminds us of God s call to be pure and holy. You will see this color during the Christmas season, and on Holy Thursday, Holy Saturday, Easter, feast days of Mary, and feast days of the angels and of those saints who were not martyrs. You will also see white on all feast days of Jesus except for his passion and death. Green This color reminds us to live in the hope of Christ s promise of eternal life. You will see this color during Ordinary Time. This is a time of growth and life. PRAYER FOR THE FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING O Jesus Christ, I acknowledge you as universal King. All that has been made has been created for You. Exercise all Your rights over me. I renew my Baptismal Vows. I renounce Satan, his pomps and his works; I promise to live as a good Christian. And, in particular do I pledge myself to labor, to the best of my ability, for the triumph of the rights of God and of Your Church. Divine Heart of Jesus, to You do I offer my poor services, laboring that all hearts may acknowledge Your sacred kingship, and that thus the reign of Your peace be established throughout the whole universe. Amen. Please continue to share the peace and joy of our faith with others. There are so many that are in the need of Jesus. Can you be for all of us a living sign to all our parishioners and neighbors, and tell them for us we need them and love them. Someone may hear and accept the invitation from you and return home to worship the Lord with us. So please invite a friend, relative, or neighbor to come with you to Church next Sunday. God will do the rest. Let us share our treasure of faith with others during this holiday season. 5 NOVEMBER, THE MONTH OF SAINTSREFLECTIONS FROM POPE FRANCIS. The month of November is the month of saints. It began with All Saints Day on November 1 and during the month we celebrate the feast days of many saints. In our bulletin each week we will present some of Pope Francis words about our becoming saints. THE SAINTS ARE NOT SUPERMEN The Saints remind us that the goal of our existence is not death, it is Paradise! The Apostle John writes: It does not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is (1 Jn 3:2). The Saintswho are the friends of Godassure us of this promise which does not disappoint. During their earthly existence they lived in profound communion with God. In the faces of the humblest and least of our brothers, the smallest and most despised brothers, they saw the face of God, and now they contemplate him face to face in his glorious beauty. The Saints are not supermen, nor were they born perfect. They are like us, like each one of us. They are people who, before reaching the glory of heaven, lived normal lives with joys and sorrows, struggles and hopes. What changed their lives? When they recognized God s love, they followed it with all their heart without reserve or hypocrisy. They spent their lives serving others, they endured suffering and adversity without hatred and responded to evil with good, spreading joy and peace. This is the life of a Saint. Saints are people who for love of God did not put conditions on him in their life; they were not hypocrites; they spent their lives at the service of others. They suffered much adversity but without hate. The Saints never hated. Understand this well: love is of God, then from whom does hatred come? Hatred does not come from God but from the devil! And the Saints removed themselves from the devil; the Saints are men and women who have joy in their hearts and they spread it to others. Never hate but serve others, the most needy; pray and live in joy. This is the way of holiness! Being holy is not a privilege for the few, as if someone had a large inheritance; in Baptism we all have an inheritance to be able to become saints. Holiness is a vocation for everyone. Thus we are all called to walk on the path which has a name and a face: the face of Jesus Christ. He teaches us to become saints. In the Gospel he shows us the way, the way of the Beatitudes (cf. Mt 5:112). In fact, the Kingdom of Heaven is for those who do not place their security in material things but in love for God, for those who have a simple, humble heart that does not presume to be just and does not judge others, for those who know how to suffer with those who suffer and how to rejoice when others rejoice. They are not violent but merciful and strive to be instruments for reconciliation and peace. Saints, whether men or women, are instruments for reconciliation and peace; they are always helping people to become reconciled and helping to bring about peace. Thus holiness is beautiful, it is a beautiful path! Today on this feast, the Saints give us a message. They tell us: trust in the Lord because the Lord does not disappoint! He never disappoints, he is a good friend always at our side. Through their witness the Saints encourage us to not be afraid of going against the tide or of being misunderstood and mocked when we speak about him and the Gospel; by their life they show us that he who stays faithful to God and to his Word Experiences the comfort of his love on this earth and then a hundredfold in eternity. Pope Francis, Angelus Message, November 1, 2013 SAINT ELIZABETH OF THE TRINITY Lisa Lickona Elizabeth Catez was born near Bourges, France, on July 18, Her father, a military man, died when she was young. Elizabeth inherited all of his verve, displaying a wild temper. But, when she made her First Communion at the age of eleven, Elizabeth encountered a Presence in her soul. She felt drawn to silent prayer. By the age of fourteen, she had consecrated herself to Christ. He came to her aid in the battle with her temper. At nineteen, she could write of the moments in which she had suffered an unjust reproof : I feel as though the blood is boiling in my veins; my being rises in revolt. But Jesus was with me. Deep down in my heart I heard his voice and then I was ready to bear anything for love of him. Later, she gave this teaching: Look at every suffering and every joy as coming directly from him, and then your life will be a continual communion, since everything will be like a sacrament that will give you God. Elizabeth planned to go to the Carmelite monastery in Dijon. But, to please her mother, she traveled, visited with the men who came to court her, and played the piano with rare talent. And all the while she found time for silence, offering to God the cell of my heart. At around this time, Elizabeth told a Dominican priest, with some apprehension, that she sensed the presence of more than one person within her. He reassured her that this was the life that comes to each of us at baptism: the indwelling of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. When she entered religious life in 1001, she felicitously received the name of the Trinity. Elizabeth fit perfectly into Carmel, that abode of silent prayer. But her stay was to be short. Only seven months after taking vows, Elizabeth contracted Addison s, a rare disease of the adrenal glands, at that time incurable. She continued, even in dark moments, to turn to her Three. In her wellknown offering of herself to the Trinity, she prayed, Bury yourself in me that I may bury myself in you, until I depart to contemplate in your light the abyss of your greatness. By Lent 1906, that departure seemed near. Bedridden, she made the last months of her life an extended retreat with Christ, seeking to be one with him in the abandonment of Calvary. After eight days of burning fever and continual thirst, her life ended on November 9, She had not stopped repeating, I am going to light, to love, to life. At her 1984 beatification Mass, Saint John Paul II called Elizabeth a brilliant witness to the joy of being rooted and grounded in love (Eph 3:17). She wanted to spend eternity delving evermore deeply into God s triune life of love. But she wrote to a friend that she also wanted to help others to go out of themselves in order to cling to God by a wholly simple and loving movement, and to keep them in this great silence within, which will allow God to communicate himself to them and transform them into himself. Saint Elizabeth of the Trinity, we beg you, root us in his love! St. Elizabeth of the Trinity was canonized just a few weeks ago on October 16th by Pope Francis. Her feast day is on November 8
