2 CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX NOVEMBER 23, OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST KING OF THE UNIVERSE FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN, A THANKSGIVING MESSAGE: This month of November is a busy month. Already people are getting into the holiday mode, getting ready for Christmas which is just a month away. And of course parents and grandparents will soon be getting ready for Thursday, thanksgiving Day, perhaps inviting relatives whom you have not seen in a while. Yes, November is busy. But November is something else. It is the month of saints. It began on November 1 with All Saints Day, when we honored all of God s holy ones in heaven, both those officially declared as saints by the church and also the many other good people, people in our families, who led good lives and who are with God in heaven, all of them saints too. November 11is St. Martin of Tours. Martin later on in his life did become a great bishop, a great teacher of the faith. But we should not only know about his later life. We should know about the young Martin. When Martin was a teenager, he served in the Roman army. While he was there, he was studying to become a Christian. Already God was working in Martin s heart. One day as Martin road to the soldiers winter quarters, he met a poor man on the road. The man cried out to him, Please give me something to keep me warm in this cold. Martin had no extra clothes, but he did have his soldier s cloak, a cloak used to cover him during the day and also when he slept at night. Without thinking twice, Martin took off his cloak and took out his sword and cut the cloak in half, giving the poor man one half of the cloak and keeping the other half for himself. Martin went to meet up with the other soldiers, many of whom probably laughed at him because of his half cloak. But that night, Martin had a dream and in the dream, the Lord Jesus came to him, wearing the half of cloak which Martin had given to the poor man. The Lord smiled at Martin and said, Martin, not yet a Christian, you have clothed me in the garment of your love. And Martin learned the lesson of the gospel Father Joseph just read, the gospel where Jesus says, Whatever you do for the least of my brothers and sisters, you do for me. Why do we recall the story of St. Martin as we prepare for Thanksgiving. The answer is very simple: Thanksgiving means giving. If our thanksgiving is just a matter of words, it is empty. If we just say to God, Thank you for food and clothing and places to live, thank you for life itself, thank you for our country, our freedom, it is nothing. Thanksgiving means giving. Do you want to thank God for His blessings to you? Then be ready to give to others, to give from your heart. Do not say to yourself, I cannot be bothered to give, to help. Let someone else do it. That is copping out on Jesus Christ. He made you to give, to be His hands and his heart to others. Last year on November 22 we observed the 50th anniversary of the death of President John F. Kennedy, a man who touched the hearts of people. He said those famous words, Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country. And we could change those words just a bit, Ask not what other people can do for you. Ask what you can do for other people. Thanksgiving means giving. Go out of your way to help others, people who need you, people for whom you may be the greatest blessing they receive in their lives. One day a woman asked me to come to say prayers for a man named Cesar at a funeral parlor. I said I would be glad to do so and I asked her was this a relative. She told me no, but then she shared this story. Cesar was basically a homeless man, living in a shelter. He had no family. He worked as a parking attendant where this lady worked. He was kind and courteous and the workers respected him. Cesar died and there was no family to bury him. And then something wonderful happened. All of the workers in that company chipped in to bury Cesar and they all came to his wake. I walked in to find one hundred people there. It would have been easy for those people to go about their business, to be concerned with their own celebration of Thanksgiving Day. But they chose not to forget. They chose to give. I told those good people that maybe on this earth Cesar had no blood-related family, but he certainly had a big family because of their kindness and love. How many Cesars Cross our lives! Do not walk by. Let your Thanksgiving show itself in your giving to others. To paraphrase John Kennedy s famous sentence, ask not what God can do for you. Ask what you can do for the least of Jesus brothers and sisters in His name. On behalf of all your priests and deacon, Happy Thanksgiving! Father Thomas B. Derivan Father Thomas D Angelo Deacon Anthony Cassaneto Father Joseph Ligory Father Robert Imbelli BIBLE STUDY CLASS Father Joseph will conduct a Bible study class for adults on Wednesday evenings in Advent at 7:30PM beginning on December 3rd. This will be an opportunity to grow in your knowledge and love of the Holy Scripture. St. Jerome says, Not to know Scripture is not to know Christ. Plan to be with us for the Bible series. The class will be conducted in the rectory. CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT The Collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) provides funding for groups that make lasting change and uplift the poor in the United States. CCHD grants improve education, support economic development, and help communities provide housing in low-income neighborhoods. Help us continue to defend human dignity and aid those living on the margins of society. Please give to the CCHD Collection.

3 OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE NOVEMBER 23 BLESSED MIGUEL AGUSTIN PRO ( ) Viva Cristo Rey! (Long live Christ the King) were the last words Father Pro uttered before he was executed for being a Catholic priest and serving his flock. Born into a prosperous, devout family in Guadalupe de Zacatecas, Mexico, he entered the Jesuits in 1911 but three years later fled to Granada, Spain, because of religious persecution in Mexico. He was ordained in Belgium in He immediately returned to Mexico, where he served a Church forced to go underground. He celebrated the Eucharist clandestinely and ministered the other sacraments to small groups of Catholics. He and his brother Roberto were arrested on trumped-up charges of attempting to assassinate Mexico s president. Roberto was spared but Miguel was sentenced to face a firing squad on November 23, His funeral became a public demonstration of faith. He was beatified in COMMENT: When Father Miguel Pro was executed in 1927, no one could have predicted that 52 years later the bishop of Rome would visit Mexico, be welcomed by its president and celebrate open-air Masses before thousands of people. Pope John Paul II made additional trips to Mexico in 1990, 1993 and Those who outlawed the Catholic church in Mexico did not count on the deeply rooted faith of its people and the willingness of many of them, like Miguel Pro, to die as martyrs. QUOTE: During his homily at the beatification Mass, Pope John Paul II said that Father Pro is a new glory for the beloved Mexican nation, as well as for the Society of Jesus. His life of sacrificing and intrepid apostolate was always inspired by a tireless evangelizing effort. Neither suffering nor serious illness, neither the exhausting ministerial activity, frequently carried out in difficult and dangerous circumstances, could stifle the radiating and contagious joy which he brought to his life for Christ and which nothing could take away (see John 16:22). Indeed, the deepest root of self-sacrificing surrender for the lowly was his passionate love for Jesus Christ and his ardent desire to be conformed to him, even unto death. ST. FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING The Church s Year of Grace ends today with the Feast of Christ the King. Next Sunday we begin a new Church Year with the First Sunday of Advent. Today s feast reminds us that the Lord Jesus is King of all the universe, but He is also the King who dwells in our hearts. As we celebrate this feast, we offer this beautiful prayer which welcomes Christ the King into our hearts and our lives: An Act of Dedication of the Human Race to Jesus Christ King Most sweet Jesus, Redeemer of the human race, look down upon us humbly prostrate before you. We are yours, and yours we wish to be; but to be more surely united with you, behold each one of us freely consecrates himself today to your Most Sacred Heart. Many indeed have never known you; many, too, despising your precepts, have rejected you. Have mercy on them all, most merciful Jesus, and draw them to your Sacred Heart. Be King, O Lord, not only of the faithful who have never forsaken you, but also of the prodigal children who have abandoned you; grant that they may quickly return to their Father s house, lest they die of wretchedness and hunger. Be King of those who are deceived by erroneous opinions, or whom discord keeps aloof, and call them back to the harbor of truth and the unity of faith, so that soon there may be but one flock and one Shepherd. Grant, O Lord, to your church assurance of freedom and immunity from harm; give tranquility of order to all nations; make the earth resound from pole to pole with one cry: Praise to the divine Heart that wrought our salvation; to it be glory and honor for ever. Amen. A THANKSGIVING DAY PRAYER We thank you, God, our grace, for being alive, tomorrow and today, for this earth, for bread and light, for the people around us, today, yesterday and every day. We thank you for our lives here and now, lives laborious and full of joy. And may neither future nor death separate us from Jesus Christ, who is your love for all mankind and all the earth. We thank you, Lord God Almighty, for you are a God of men, for you are not ashamed to be called our God, for you know us all by name, for you hold the world in your hands. And that is why you have created us and for this purpose called us into life, that we should be all made one with you, to be your people here on earth. Blessed are you, Creator of all that is, blessed are you for giving us a place of freedom and of life, blessed are you for the light of our eyes and for the air we breathe. We thank you for the whole of creation, for all the works of your hands, for all that you have done among us through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

4 NOVEMBER 23, 2014 THE GRACE OF THANKSGIVING ST. THERESA THANKSGIVING FAMILY MASS Throughout the story of faith, men and women are saved, healed, strengthened, forgiven, and redeemed by God. And in every story, the response is the same: a prayer of gratitude. It is the grateful heart that seems, even in time of trouble, closest to God. The grateful heart of Solomon is worth remembering. God told him he could pray for anything and it would be given to him. All he wanted was wisdom. Solomon stands before his people, and leads them in prayer (1 Kgs 8: 55-61). It is a touching image of a king praying with and for his people. His prayer is not a wish list for the nation. It is a prayer of gratitude. God has been generous in faithfulness, love, and mercy, even when the people were not faithful. Solomon does not want a day to go by that the nation does not remember to be grateful to God. Thanksgiving, for Solomon, was not one day, but a way of life. For Jesus, having a grateful heart was an essential characteristic of a disciple. He understood the struggles, the tensions, and the worries of the human heart. Yet he offers a caution: it is easy to give power to those things, and to lose sight of the blessings. Jesus brings his disciples out into a field, and implores them to look at the lilies, the birds, the flowers of the field (Mt 6: 26-34). He uses the image to remind them that a stubborn, cold, and unforgiving heart will lose sight of God s loving presence. A heart that remembers where there has been light and strength and joy is the one that experiences God s saving grace, even in the darkest hour. Praying grace at the dinner table was once a common, daily ritual. It still is for some, but our fast food, microwave culture has many people leading busy lives. An evening meal, recounting the blessings and the challenges of the day, may seem like a luxury to us. And so we embrace the temptation simply to bemoan, complain, and criticize. We run the risk of forgetting what is really important. A seventh-grader complained vehemently about having to go to a soup kitchen as part of a Confirmation service project. She went. She served. She discovered: When I finally sorted out my feelings, I thought of all the wonderful things I could do to make these people happier. When we got there, they weren t anything like what I had expected. They were exactly like you and me. How grateful I was to go. Perhaps that is where true thanksgiving begins. Gratitude, in the end, is all about attitude. Grace is only amazing when the eyes and the heart are open to seeing that the Spirit will lead, even when we are afraid. Who will say grace at your Thanksgiving table? In my family, all eyes turn toward me, as my brother insists I am the only professional at the table. Do you skip grace because Uncle Harry doesn t go for all that religions stuff? Do you forget it because you are in a restaurant, and after all, what would people think? Speaking our grace, our gratitude, must be a part of our daily life, not just on Thanksgiving Day. It does not matter how many people are there, or where we are. Unless we speak aloud our gratitude, we really cannot become grateful people. And if we are not grateful people, we cannot grow as disciples of Jesus. Father Gregory E.S. Malovetz Our Thanksgiving Vigil Mass will be on Wednesday, November 26st at 7:30PM. Please join the children of our school and Religious Education Program in giving thanks for our families, friends and all we have in our life. Thursday s Mass schedule is as usual 8:00AM, 9:00AM and 12 Noon.
