2 CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX JUNE 30, 2013 THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME The accounts that we have of Jesus life make it abundantly clear that Jesus was a man of prayer. The first thing He did after His baptism was pray. The last thing He did before His death was pray. And in between there are so many references to His personal prayer life. For example, the gospel tells us that rising early in the morning, Jesus went off into a lonely place in the desert; there He was absorbed in prayer. The context in which that statement is made clearly indicates that Jesus did not use prayer as a substitute for work. He was a hard worker. Never once did Jesus ask God to do anything that He should have done Himself. Neither did Jesus use prayer as a substitute for reflection. Wisdom wasn t poured into His head like water into a glass. He thought about life and struggled with it until it made sense. So clear thought and hard work can produce some marvelous results, but Jesus added one other ingredient. That was prayer. Why did He do that? What did it mean to Him? And what does His prayer life mean to us? The most obvious answer is that Jesus prayed because He felt the need for it. In all great matters, a sense of need precedes the discovery of the experience. Jesus prayed because He felt the need to pray. And here we touch the mystery of the incarnation. He was God and man. He was God in human flesh. But we ought not forget that He was also human. And somehow in this great mystery of the incarnation Jesus needed the help, the power, and the strength that prayer can provide. Why else would He arise long before daylight and find a solitary place to pray? So it is with you and me. Life confronts us with questions we cannot answer, problems that defy solutions and challenges that exceed our capabilities. When that happens, what are we to do? Some would say we must try harder. But all of us know that at those times trying harder is not enough. These are the times when prayer becomes something more than religious ritual. It is inwardly establishing contact with a resource of power and allowing that power to replenish our own power. And prayer reminds us that when we are alone, we are not truly alone. This is one of the most profound and mysterious facts of human life-the consciousness that we are never alone. Jesus went to a solitary place to pray, but there, alone, He was not alone. In the experience of solitude is the potential of an inner strength, if we understand that we are not alone. Then prayer becomes something more. It is being alone with God and communicating with Him. This does not imply then or suggest a withdrawal from life. It is rather a preparation for meeting the challenges of life. For the truth is we cannot do much for anyone else, unless periodically we do something for ourselves. The farther an airplane flies, the more it requires ground service. Whenever a person is out of tune it cannot do much for others until it has first done something for itself. This was what prayer means to Jesus. He prayed because He knew the power that prayer provides. He prayed because He had needs that only prayer could meet. If that was true of Jesus, can it be any less true of you and me? ST. ADVANCE RIDE TICKETS Hurry! Hurry! Hurry! Come buy your Advance Ride tickets now and avoid the long lines. During the Feast each ride will require 1 ticket, so from now until July 22 nd you can buy 10 ride tickets for $20.00 and save yourself $15.00 over the individual ticket price at the Feast. Save time & money by buying your ride tickets now weekdays at the Rectory and weekends in the Church Gift Shop. PETITION BOOK Have you noticed our Petition Book in the vestibule of the Church? Every Saturday before the 5:00PM Mass, the petitions entered into the book for that week are brought up to the altar of the Blessed Mother, where they remain for all the weekend Masses. Please pray for these intentions. CONFESSIONS are heard every Saturday from 4:00PM- 5:00PM or by appointment in the Rectory.

3 THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 17 TH ANNUAL ST. THERESA FEAST Our 17 th Annual Summer Festival is only three weeks away. It will be held from July 24 th to the 28 th. So tell your family and friends to save the dates and make plans for a fun filled celebration. RAFFLE As part of our feast we also hold our Grand Raffle. The grand prize will be a 2013 Mercedes Benz C300 or $30,000. The 2 nd prize will be $1,000 and the 3 rd prize will be $500. There will only be 1,000 tickets sold at a cost of $100 each. Once again we ask for your help. Proceeds from this raffle are very important to the finances of our parish. We need everyone to make an effort to buy these raffle tickets or network them among friends, relatives or co-workers. If you are unable to purchase them yourself take them to work and ask a number of your co-workers to share the cost of the ticket. Quite a few times the $30,000 grand prize has been split among friends. If your tickets stubs are in before 10:00AM on Monday July 1 st you qualify for the early-bird drawing. The winner of the early-bird will receive $300 and 3 additional free tickets for the Grand Raffle. Each weekend parishioners will be in the back of Church to accept your raffle tickets, answer any questions, or give you any additional tickets that you may need. THIS YEARS THEME Each year since the inception of the feast we have had a catchphrase that is the underlying theme of that years feast. As you may recall Pope Benedict XVI had set aside this year as a special year for Catholics throughout the world to rediscover and share with others the precious gift of Faith entrusted to each of us. In recognition of this we have chosen as our theme: The Year of Faith-The St. Theresa Feast Embodies Our Faith. RELIGIOUS SERVICES Final details of our procession route and religious observance schedule are still being worked on. Each night we will have opening prayers, followed by Holy Hour and a Mass celebrated for a special intention. We will also have a concert in the Church immediately following the Sunday procession. More information will be forthcoming. VOLUNTEERS Our Feast would not be possible without the efforts of hundreds of parishioners that volunteer & help each year. As our feast continues to grow, and as we try to initiate new features for our changing parishioner base, we are in need for more & more volunteers and the ideas that they bring with them. If you volunteered in the past we thank you for your endeavors and hope that you will be able to help us this year. If you have not helped in the past please give us a try this year. Whatever amount of time you can give will be greatly appreciated. Fellow parishioners will be outside of Church before & after all of the weekend Masses. Stop by to see how you can help. It is a process for adults who are interested in becoming Catholic or who are already baptized and desire to complete their sacramental initiation through the reception of Eucharist and/or Confirmation. If you seek to become part of our community of faith or wish to complete your sacramental initiation, please call the rectory at to leave your name and telephone number. Someone on our RCIA team will return your call and set a time to speak with you about this important decision. The RCIA is a vital source of renewal for our own parish community, not only because new members join the parish, but also because our personal witness, our worship service, and our teaching will offer the support necessary for the men and women who seek to become part of the Catholic Church.
