2 CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN: We look back just a few weeks ago to the visit of our Holy Father Pope Francis to our country and to our city. The memory of his days with us is still vivid in our minds. We truly give thanks to God for Pope Francis and we continue to observe his request, Do not forget to pray for me. Pope Francis said much for us to reflect on. But again and again he mentioned immigrants and the necessity of our respect for them. In his speech at Congress he reminded lawmakers that he is a son of immigrants. His parents came as immigrants from Italy to Argentina to build a better life for their family. The Holy Father said: In recent centuries, millions of people came to this land to pursue their dream of building a future in freedom. We, the people of this continent, are not fearful of foreigners, because most of us were once foreigners. I say this to you as the son of immigrants, knowing that so many of you are also descended from immigrants. Tragically, the rights of those who were here long before us were not always respected. For those peoples and their nations, from the Heart of American democracy, I wish to reaffirm my highest esteem and appreciation. The Pope reminds us of the openness we should have to others, whoever they are, whether they come from a different part of the world or have lived here all their lives. He said: When the stranger in our midst appeals to us, we must not repeat the sins and the errors of the past. We must resolve now to live as nobly and as justly as possible, as we educate new generations not to turn their back on our neighbors and everything around us. Building a nation calls us to recognize that we must constantly relate to others, rejecting a mindset of hostility in order to adopt one of reciprocal subsidiarity, in a constant effort to do our best. I am confident that we can do this. This week we celebrate the feast of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, whom you will read about later in this bulletin. Mother Cabrini belongs to us for many reasons. She is the first naturalized United States citizen to be declared a saint. She came here from Italy as did so many in our families. Like the widow in the gospel, she gave everything she had for the service of God and others. She is buried here in our own city in Washington Heights in a shrine you can visit. And finally like the widow in the gospel today, she gave all that she had to serve the Lord and His people, particularly the sick and the suffering. St. Frances Xavier Cabrini is the patron saint of immigrants and understandably so. She was an immigrant herself and she valued each person, immigrant or not, as a child of God. That is her enduring lesson to us. We must always remember, as President Kennedy once said, that we are a nation of nations. Our country benefits from the diversity of its citizens. Like Mother Cabrini, may we see Christ in one another and like Pope Francis may we respect all as members of the same Family of God. Father Thomas B. Derivan Food is now being collected for our Food Pantry. The pantry is in need of items for Thanksgiving. We are asking for items such as stuffing mix, canned vegetables, cranberry sauce, gravy, tomato sauce, pasta, plus everyday items such as coffee, rice, tuna fish, cake mixes, frosting, canned or boxed juices, and other non-perishable items. NO GLASS JARS PLEASE! These items will be passed on to needy families in our parish and community. God bless you for your kindness. Excerpt from the Lectionary for Mass 2001 Many rich people put in large sums. Calling His disciples to Himself, He said to them, Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood. Mk 12:41c, ST. THERESA SCHOOL Help Us Raise Money with Little or no Effort: We are collecting Box Tops for Education. If you cut the box tops off your items and bring them to church on Sunday just leave them in the sacristy and we will make sure we get them. For each box top collected we receive 10 cents. THANK YOU! We are most grateful to all our wonderful parishioners who so generously donate to our Sunday contributions. Your contributions help to build up and improve our parish. We are thankful to all of you who help make a difference in our community. Please continue to help us in order to keep St. Theresa Parish the vital, growing parish that it is.

3 NOVEMBER 8, 2015 ST. FRANCES XAVIER CABRINI NOVEMBER 13 ( ) When you grow up, what would you like to be? St. Frances Xavier Cabrini was named for the great missionary to China. And, indeed, Mother Cabrini did become a missionary, but not to China. Frances Cabrini was the youngest of fifteen children born in Lombardy, Italy. After receiving a teaching certificate when she was eighteen, she tried to enter several religious communities of sisters but was refused because of her frail health. She then became a member of the Third Order Secular of St. Francis. She followed this rule while she did her work as a teacher. In her free time, Frances taught catechism and visited the poor and the sick. Then she began to do charitable work at the House of Providence, an orphanage in Codogno, Italy. In 1877, she and two companions made vows and took the religious habit. Five others were soon to join them. However, because of many difficulties, the bishop closed the orphanage. He told Frances, You have always wanted to be a missionary. I don t know of any missionary groups. Begin one of your own! Frances and her community, who were to be known as Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, started a convent in Codogno, and then others in Milan and in Rome. Frances also wrote a rule of life for them to follow. Still thinking about the needs of the people of China, Mother Cabrini went to Pope Leo XIII to ask that their institute be sent to China. The Pope told her not to go east but to go west to America to care for the thousands of Italian immigrants there. The immigrants were unable to speak English and were being cheated by their employers. They lived together in cold, crowded rooms with not enough to eat. The death rate among them was very high because sickness spread quickly in these conditions. Mother Cabrini was asked to bring her sisters to staff an orphanage school and convent that were being prepared for them. When the sisters arrived in New York in 1889, they learned that the plans had fallen through. The bishop advised her to return to Italy, but Mother Cabrini stayed. She opened orphanages and schools, started adult classes in religion for the immigrants, and began a small hospital. Her activities during the next ten years were remarkable. She traveled back and forth between Europe and the United States, establishing convents, schools, orphanages and hospitals on both continents. She also opened schools and orphanages in South America. When the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart celebrated the twenty-fifth year of their founding, the group had fifty convents in eight countries, and her seven companions had increased to almost one thousand. I have not done it, she said. God has done it all. The work was not easy. The new languages were hard to learn, there was opposition from clergy and laity alike, builders tried to cheat her, and revolutions in Central America destroyed her convents. Nevertheless Mother Cabrini kept on because she had absolute trust in God. The motto she chose for her Congregation was, I can do all things in him who strengthens me (Phil. 4:13). Mother Cabrini had become ill with malaria in South America. Over the years this illness recurred and took much of her strength. In 1917 she died in Chicago. At the time of her death, there were sixty-seven convents of her sisters in Europe and the Americas. After her death, her childhood dream finally came true when her sisters went as missionaries to China. Mother Cabrini became an American citizen in She was an immigrant working among immigrants, the people who have made a great nation of the United States. 4 THIRTY SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ORIGINS OF VETERANS DAY In 1921, an unknown World War I American soldier was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. This site, on a hillside overlooking the Potomac River and the city of Washington, became the focal point of reverence for America s veterans. Similar ceremonies occurred earlier in England and France, where an unknown soldier was buried in each nation s highest place of honor (in England Westminster Abbey, in France, the Arc de Triomphe). These memorial gestures all took place on November 11th, giving universal recognition to the celebrated ending of World Was I fighting at 11:00AM, November 11, 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). The day became known as Armistice Day. Armistice Day officially received its name in America in 1926 through a congressional resolution. It became a national holiday 12 years later by similar congressional action. If the idealistic hope had been realized that World War I was the War to end all Wars, November 11th might still be called Armistice Day. But only a few years after the holiday was proclaimed, war broke out in Europe. Sixteen and one-half million Americans took part. Four hundred seven thousand of them died in service, more than 292,000 in battle. Armistice Day Changed To Honor All Veterans: Realizing that peace was equally preserved by veterans of WW II and Korea, congress was requested to make this day an occasion to honor those who have served America in all wars. In 1954 President Eisenhower signed a bill proclaiming November 11th as Veterans Day. On Memorial Day 1958, two more unidentified American war dead were brought from overseas and interred in the plaza beside the unknown soldier of World War I. One was killed in World War II, the other in the Korean War. In 1973, a law passed providing interment of an unknown American from the Vietnam War, but none was found for several years. In 1984, an unknown serviceman from that conflict was placed alongside the others. To honor these men, symbolic of all Americans who gave their lives in all wars, an Army honor guard, the 3rd U.S. Infantry (The Old Guard), keeps day and night vigil. A law passed in 1968 changed the national commemoration of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. It soon became apparent, however, that November 11th was a date of historic significance to many Americans. Therefore, in 1978 Congress returned the observance to its traditional date. National Ceremonies held at Arlington: The focal point for official, national ceremonies for Veterans Day continues to be the memorial amphitheater built around the Tomb of the Unknowns. At 11:00AM on November 11th, a combined color guard representing all military services executes Present Arms at the tomb. The nation s tribute to its war dead is symbolized by the laying of a presidential wreath. The bugler plays taps. The rest of the ceremony takes place in the amphitheater. Every year the President of the United States urges all Americans to honor the commitment of our Veterans through appropriate public ceremonies. VETERANS DAY This Wednesday is our observance of Veterans Day. We particularly pay tribute to those who have served our country in the Armed Forces whose military service has helped us to enjoy the blessings of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We should also remember in our prayers on Wednesday the young men and women who are currently serving in the Armed Forces at this time. We pray for their safety and for their speedy return to their families. Our Masses on Wednesday, Veterans Day will be at 8:00AM and 9:00AM. VETERAN S DAY PRAYER Dear Lord, Today we honor our veterans, worthy men and women who gave their best when they were called upon to serve and protect their country. We pray that you will bless them, Lord, for their unselfish service In the continual struggle to preserve our freedoms, our safety, and our country s heritage, for all of us. Bless them abundantly for the hardships they faced, for the sacrifices they made for their many different contributions to America s victories over tyranny and oppression. We respect them, we thank them, we honor them, we are proud of them, and we pray that you will watch over these special people and bless them with peace and happiness. 5 PRAYER FOR ALL THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED NOVEMBER 10 ST. LEO the GREAT (D. 461) Heavenly Father, I believe that in Your wisdom and justice You willed to purify all persons who die without having attained the state that they need for all eternity, all who have still to expiate completely the sins committed here on earth. I also believe that You have mercifully arranged that this process of purification can be aided by the prayers of the living, and especially by the Eucharist. Help me to Pray for my brothers and sisters who have departed from this world. (Here Mention the names of those you pray for.) May their time of purification be short, and may they be quickly guided into that holy light promised by our Lord to Abraham and his descendants. I offer You sacrifices and prayers of praise. Accept them for all the souls of the faithful departed and admit them all to the eternal joy of heaven. With apparent strong conviction of the importance of the Bishop of Rome in the Church, and of the Church as the ongoing sign of Christ s presence in the world, Leo the Great displayed endless dedication as Pope. Elected in 440, he worked tirelessly as Peter s successor, guiding his fellow bishops as equals in the episcopacy and infirmities. Leo is known as one of the best administrative popes of the ancient Church. His work branched into four main areas, indicative of his notion of the pope s total responsibility for the flock of Christ. He worked at length to control the heresies of Pelagianism, Manichaeism and others, placing demands on their followers so as to secure true Christian beliefs. A second major area of his concern was doctrinal controversy in the Church in the East, to which he responded with a classic letter setting down the Church s teaching on the two natures of Christ. With strong faith, he also led the defense of Rome against barbarian attack, taking the role of peacemaker. In these three areas, Leo s work has been highly regarded. His growth to sainthood has its basis in the spiritual depth with which he approached the pastoral care of his people, which was the fourth focus of his work. He is known for his spiritually profound sermons. An instrument of the call to holiness, well-versed in Scripture and ecclesiastical awareness, Leo had the ability to reach the everyday needs and interests of his people. One of his sermons is used in the Office of Readings on Christmas. It is said of Leo that his true significance rests in his doctrinal insistence on the mysteries of Christ and the Church and in the supernatural charisms of the spiritual life given to humanity in Christ and in His Body, the Church. Thus Leo held firmly that everything he did and said as pope for the administration of the Church represented Christ, the head of the Mystical Body, and St. Peter, in whose place Leo acted. At a time when there is widespread criticism of Church structures, we also hear criticism that bishops and priests indeed, all of us are too preoccupied with administration of temporal matters. Pope Leo is an example of a great administrator who used his talents in areas where spirit and structure are inseparably combined: doctrine, peace and pastoral care. He avoided an angelism that tries to live without the body, as well as the practicality that deals only in externals. Please continue to share the peace and joy of our faith with others. There are so many that are in the need of Jesus. Can you be for all of us a living sign to all our parishioners and neighbors, and tell them for us we need them and love them. Someone may hear and accept the invitation from you and return home to worship the Lord with us. So please invite a friend, relative, or neighbor to come with you to Church next Sunday. God will do the rest. Let us share our treasure of faith with others.
