2 CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX OCTOBER 21, 2012 TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME The early church fathers said there were seven deadly sins. High up on that list they placed the sin of wrath. In fact it was second only to the sin of pride. Most of us today do not use the word wrath. A more familiar term for us is anger. The meanings are essentially the same. So we will use the more familiar word. The church fathers listed anger among the seven deadly sins. Someone has said that one good way to measure the size of a person is by observing the size of the things that make him or her mad. One good question for you and me to ask ourselves is this: What makes you angry? Think about the things that made you mad this past week? What were they? A car on the highway that cut you off? A rude clerk in a department store? Having to stand in line a little longer than you thought necessary.? A phone call that interrupted your dinner from someone trying to sell you something you did not want? All such things are inconvenient and can be terribly annoying. But surely we should use our power of anger on something more significant than a few minor irritations. Often these days we read of a person riding in one car shooting to death a person riding in another car. Apparently, the two were total strangers. Police speculate that such shootings were in response to a driving altercation that may have occurred a few moments earlier. If that be true, it is a clear example of what the church fathers meant when they called anger a deadly sin. So be careful, my friends, about the things which you allow to make you angry. And then be doubly careful about the way in which you express that emotion. Outbursts of uncontrolled rage may be understood in the lives of small children, but have no rightful place in the lives of adults. Some people seek to justify their explosive anger with the explanation that it blows over very quickly. Perhaps it does. But so does a tornado. But often it leaves behind a trail of destruction that must be repaired after the storm has passed. That kind of anger is a deadly sin. But can anger cease to be a vice and become a virtue? Two things can be said about anger as we see it revealed on the pages of the Gospels. First thing: Jesus anger was never provoked by some personal wrong done to Him. In the Sermon of the Mount, Jesus said to his disciples: When a person strikes you on the right cheek, turn and offer him the other. That is what He teaches us, and that is how He lived. Even when people spat upon Him, mocked Him, scourged Him, and crucified Him, He did not respond with one angry word. Instead, He prayed for His tormentors, just as He had taught His disciples to do. Is this unrealistic? Perhaps it may seem that way. But personal resentment and Christ-likeness are opposing traits of character. The more you have the one, the less you have of the other. The other thing that can be said about Jesus; anger is that it was always rooted in His love for people. That was what made Jesus so angry. His love for people would not let Him stand quietly by and watch others be abused. Where is the place for this kind of anger in your life and mine? It seems to me that there are many places. People today are not through abusing people, not by a long shot. Let me give one example of which we are all aware the starving people in our own country and throughout the world. On the evening news, we often see their emaciated bodies, and our first response is often sympathy. Our second response should be penitence. Not so much because we caused it, as because we haven t cared enough about it. But our next response should be anger. There is enough surplus food in this country and in the world right now to feed those people. But politics, and greed, and indifference are standing in the way. Those problems will be corrected, when and if enough of us get mad about it. The teaching and example of Jesus could be summed up like this: in our own personal lives, we should be ready to accept and forgive almost anything. Not that we should be door mats. Jesus wasn t that. But neither did He waste His emotional energy resenting every wrong done to Him. He turned the other cheek, and so should we. But when another s face is slapped, when other people get walked on, then it is time to get mad. That is the point at which anger ceases to be a deadly sin and becomes a lively virtue. Friday, November 2 is All Souls Day. A special All Souls envelope is included in your set of envelopes. If you do not have a set of envelopes, you may obtain all Souls envelopes in the rear of the church. Masses on All Souls Day will be offered for all deceased relatives and friends of our parishioners. CONFESSIONS are heard every Saturday from 4:00PM to 5:00PM or by appointment in the Rectory October is respect life month We are not some casual or meaningless product of evolution. Each of us is the result of a thought of God. Each of us is willed, each of us is loved, each of us is necessary PETITION BOOK Have you noticed our Petition Book in the vestibule of the Church? Every Saturday before the 5:00PM Mass, the petitions entered into the book for that week are brought up to the altar of the Blessed Mother, where they remain for all the weekend Masses. When St. Theresa School learned that Major Rod Cassidy, a young lawyer working for the Archdiocese of New York, had been deployed to Lagman Air Force Base in Afghanistan, they decided to send a message from home: three huge boxes of snacks and comfort foods. In appreciation, Major Cassidy sent an American flag that was flown at FOB Lagman. He said, as is tradition, the flag flew for nine minutes and eleven seconds in honor of those who lost their lives on September 11, Never forget.
