2 CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN: DECEMBER 14, 2014 THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT Today our Advent celebration takes on a new color. Two times during the year, the priest wears the rose-colored vestments at Mass. One is in the middle of Lent. The other, today, is at the midpoint of Advent. The reason is simple: it is the Church s visible reminder to us that already the purple of our Advent preparation is mixed with the whiteness of our expected joy at Christmas. The rose or pink color is a glimpse of the feast that is ahead. It is a reminder to us that Advent quickly goes by and that Christmas is near. But there is something more here. The rose-color of the priest s vestments and the pink candle of the Advent Wreath remind us of something else, or shall we say, someone else. For pink is for a lady and our pink candle and vestments honor Our Lady, Mary Mother of Jesus, Mary our Mother too. She is here at the middle of Advent. She is always in the middle of our Christian lives. We can say quite truly that Advent belongs to Mary. She knew Advent better than anyone else. She was Advent, for Advent means coming and the one whom the Lord chose to be the instrument for His coming to us was Mary His Mother. When our refined, Holy Father, Pope Benedict, spoke in Cologne, Germany, he spoke of the Magi, the Wise Men who came to Jesus on the first Christmas. And he said these words, When the Magi came to Bethlehem, the gospel says, going into the house they saw the child with Mary His Mother and they fell down and worshiped Him. Here at long last was the long awaited moment-their encounter with Jesus. Going into the house represents the Church. In order to find the Savior, one has to enter the house which is the Church. One must come to sense that the Church is his or her home inasmuch as it is the home of Christ where Mary His Mother dwells. The Pope is telling us that the Church is where we find Jesus in the arms of His Mother Mary. To use the Pope s words, It is Mary who shows us Jesus her Son. She introduces every person and enables every person to see and touch Jesus and to take Him into his arms. Mary teaches us to contemplate Jesus with the eyes of the heart and to make Jesus our very life. It is Mary who shows us Jesus. She teaches us to make Jesus our very life. Is there anything more beautiful that we can say about Our Blessed Mother than that? It is Mary who shows us Jesus. That is what she has been doing for two thousand years-showing Jesus. She showed the Infant Jesus to simple shepherds and kingly wise men who came on bended knee to the manger of Bethlehem. But she did not stop showing Jesus when the first Christmas was over. For two thousand years, she has shown Jesus to every person whose heart is filled with faith and love. As you will recall, just this past Friday we celebrated the Feast of Our Lady s appearance to St. Juan Diego at Guadalupe in Mexico almost five hundred years ago. You remember how Our Blessed Mother, Patroness of the Americas, showed herself to St. Juan, but in the process showed herself to all of us, her American children. She literally imprinted her love on the tilma or cloak of Juan Diego, a symbol of her love for us. But there is more here. Our Lady appeared wearing a black band around her waist, a sign worn by a pregnant mother to show that she was carrying a new-born child in her womb. Therefore Mary appeared to Juan and to us as the Mother, in Pope Benedict s words, who shows us Jesus. She continually brings Jesus into the world and into our own lives. She never keeps our love or our prayers to herself. She never centers our attention on herself. She always points us to Jesus her Son. Again in Pope Benedict s words, she teaches us to make Jesus our very life. In these final weeks of Advent, turn to Mary. Remember that during the first Advent, two thousand years ago, Mary was literally traveling to Bethlehem. She was traveling to the first Christmas. Do you want to prepare for Christmas? Then travel with Mary. She that will never let you down. She said to Juan Diego at Guadalupe, Do not be afraid. Am I not here, I who am your Mother? She says to us during this Advent. She says that to us during every day of life. She will say that to us when we go to heaven s door. Do not be afraid. Am I not here, I who am your Mother? Father Thomas B. Derivan We thank Bonavita Key Food for their generous donation of turkeys for our Thanksgiving Food Pantry. They are always very giving and always there for our parish and school. God bless them and their families this holiday season. They are in our prayers. Thank You once again. THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT St. Theresa School is still accepting ink cartridges to be recycled. Please feel free to drop them off at the school. We are also collecting Box Tops for Education. For every box top we send in we are given 10 cents. Please place box tops in an envelope and you may leave them at the school or the rectory. We are always looking for ways to offset the cost to our parents. Thank you for always helping us!

3 THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT WE PRAY FOR THOSE WHO ARE IN THE ARMED FORCES BLESSED MARY FRANCES SCHERVIER DECEMBER 15 ( ) This woman who once wanted to become a Trappistine nun was instead led by God to establish a community of sisters who care for the sick and aged in the United States and throughout the world. Born into a distinguished family in Aix-la-Chapelle, France, Frances ran the household after her mother s death and established a reputation for generosity to the poor. In 1844 she became a Secular Franciscan. The next year she and four companions established a religious community devoted to caring for the poor. In 1851 the Sisters of the Poor of St. Francis were approved by the local bishop; the community soon spread. The first U.S. foundation was made in Mother Frances visited the United States in 1863 and helped her sisters nurse soldiers wounded in the Civil War. She visited the United States again in When Philip Hoever was establishing the Brothers of the Poor of St. Francis, she encouraged him. When Mother Frances died, there were 2,500 members of her community worldwide. The number has kept growing. They are still engaged in operating hospitals and homes for the aged. Mother Mary Frances was beatified in The sick, the poor and the aged are constantly in danger of being considered useless members of society and therefore ignored-or worse. Women and men motivated by the ideals of Mother Frances are needed if the God given dignity and destiny of all people are to be respected. In 1868, Mother Frances wrote to all her sisters, reminding them of Jesus words: You are my friends if you do what I command you I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another. She continued: If we do this faithfully and zealously, we will experience the truth of the words of our father St. Francis who says that love lightens all difficulties and sweetens all bitterness. We will likewise partake of the blessing which St. Francis promised to all his children, both present and future, after having admonished them to love one another even as he had loved them and continues to love them. Our parish would like to have a visible reminder of all our parishioners and friends or relatives of our parishioners who are in the Armed Forces. These names will be placed on a prayer list next to the Shrine of Our Blessed Mother in our church. If you have someone to remember, please fill out the form below and give it to an usher at Mass or drop it off at the Rectory as soon as possible. - For Prayer List For Those Serving In The Armed Forces Of Our Country: Name of Person to be remembered Branch of Service Requested by ST. THERESA OUTREACH PROGRAM St. Theresa Outreach Program is sponsoring a Coat Drive. All coats that are donated will go to the toddlers with learning disabilities that attend the BOLD school here on St. Theresa Avenue. We are asking for boys and girls new coats sizes 3T, 4T, 5, 6 & 7 and also hats gloves and scarves. Please drop all your donations at the rectory office as soon as possible. Thank you for all you do for our Parish and community. This Christmas Season please continue to share the peace and joy of our faith with others. There are so many that are in the need of Jesus. Can you be for all of us a living sign to all our parishioners and neighbors, and tell them for us we need them and love them. Someone may hear and accept the invitation from you and return home to worship the Lord with us. So please invite a friend, relative, or neighbor to come with you to Church next Sunday. God will do the rest. Let us share our treasure of faith with others. REMINDER If you have a Sunday Mass offered for a loved one and are present at the Mass and would like to bring up the Offertory Gifts to the Altar, please let one of the ushers know before the Mass begins. CONFESSIONS are heard every Saturday from 4:00PM-5:00PM or by appointment in the Rectory.

4 DECEMBER 14, 2014 ADVENT RECONCILIATION MONDAY: Each year, during Advent and Lent, Cardinal Dolan has directed parishes to have extended hours for confessions, particularly to help people who are not able to come during our regular confession time on Saturdays from 4:00PM to 5:00PM. Therefore this Monday, December 15, we will have the opportunity for confession in our church from 3:00PM to 9:00PM. We welcome all who come for Christ s forgiving grace, especially those who may have been away from the sacraments. Come home to Christ for Christmas! An examination of conscience is provided. We hope it is helpful. GETTING TO YES AN EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE FOR ADVENT A young woman from an insignificant village in an occupied land said it first, said it best, and said it in a way that changed the world: Yes, Lord. May it be done to me according to your word (Luke 1:38). Mary was the first among us to receive the good news of great joy that will be for all the people (Luke 2:10). And believing it, she gave the model response, the complete gift of herself to God and his rescue plan for the human race. What made Mary so quick to recognize the coming of God s kingdom on earth? How is it that she embraced her part in it so swiftly and completely? One of Jesus sayings points to the answer: From the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks (Luke 6:45). Mary didn t have to get to yes in her conversation with the angel Gabriel. She was already there. Long before the Holy Spirit overshadowed her, Mary was attuned to God. Her heart rejoiced in his love, and she lived for him with every fiber of her being. Her verbal assent burst forth as the natural outpouring of a life that was always saying yes to God in its every thought, word, and deed. None of us has gotten to yes the way Mary did. But Advent is a time for taking another step in that direction. This Advent, Jesus is inviting you to prepare your heart for his coming-not just his first one, in Bethlehem, but his second, when he comes again in glory. He wants you to know the joy of being one with him and of playing your part to build his kingdom on earth. He is ready to remove every barrier, big or small, so that you can say and live a deeper yes and receive more of his life. And so he invites you to come to him in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you identify areas of your life that need God s healing and loving touch. Take time to reflect, and use the following questions as a starting point. Ask Mary to pray for you, too. She is your mother, after all, and she longs to see you traveling the narrow road that will end with Jesus welcome, Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world (Matthew 25:34). Yes to Love of God. Am I loving and serving God with my whole heart, mind, and strength? Where could I do better? Am I waiting and watching for the Lord through daily prayer? Am I learning to meet him and listen to him in his word? Have I sought him through faithful Mass attendance and the sacraments? Have I used my gift of speech in a way that honors God and builds up his people? Is there anything about it that needs cleaning up-foul language, gossip, complaining, verbal abuse? Do both my mouth and my actions say, yes, Lord? Does God hold first place in my life, or has something or someone else weaseled in? Is he the Lord of my time, money, and other resources? Have I been using these gifts to build his kingdom? Has desire or anxiety over money and material things affected my decisions and distracted me from God? Can I honestly say I trust God with every part of my life? Yes to Love of Neighbor. How am I doing in my relationships with family members, friends, coworkers, neighbors, parishioners? Have any of my words, attitudes, or actions caused disunity? Am I harboring anger, resentment, or hatred toward someone? Is there anyone I need to forgive? Is there anyone whose forgiveness I need to ask? Do I give appropriate respect to parents, teachers, employers, and all legitimate authority? Do I accept correction from them or from others, or have I sometimes pridefully insisted on my own way? Have I done violence to anyone or treated them with disrespect? Have I used or taken advantage of anyone? Am I helping to build a world where every human being is valued and seen as having dignity? Am I more focused on building myself a cozy, comfortable life than on caring for others? Is God inviting me to say yes to some service to people in need? How am I working for the coming of Christ s kingdom of justice and peace? Am I sinning by omission in any of these areas? Mother Mary, help me to surrender my whole life and self to God, with complete confidence in both his love and his power to transform me. Let everything about me echo your own total gift of self: Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word (Luke 1:38). PETITION BOOK Have you noticed our Petition Book in the vestibule of the Church? Every Saturday before the 5:00PM Mass, the petitions entered into the book for that week are brought up to the altar of the Blessed Mother, where they remain for all the St. Theresa s Adult and Children s Choirs will be present a Christmas Performance on Wednesday, December 17th from 7:30PM to 8:30PM. Please come an join us to hear their angelic voices.

5 BLESSING OF A CHRISTMAS TREE The use of the Christmas tree is relatively modern. Its origins are found in the medieval mystery plays that depicted the tree of paradise and the Christmas light or candle that symbolized Christ, the Light of the world. According to custom, the Christmas tree is set up just before Christmas and may remain in place until the Solemnity of Epiphany. The lights of the tree are illuminated after the prayer of blessing. In the home the Christmas tree may be blessed by a parent or another family member, in connection with the evening meal on the Vigil of Christmas or at another suitable time on Christmas Day. Lord our God, We praise you for the light of creation: the sun, the moon, and the stars of the night. We praise you for the light of Israel: the Law, the prophets, and the wisdom of the Scriptures. We praise you for Jesus Christ, your Son: he is Emmanuel, God-with-us, the Prince of Peace, who fills us with the wonder of your love. Lord God, let your blessing come upon us as we illumine this tree. May the light and cheer it gives be a sign of the joy that fills our hearts. May all who delight in this tree come to the knowledge and joy of salvation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen LOOKING AHEAD-OUR CHRISTMAS SCHEDULE: We will soon celebrate the Solemnity of the Birth of Our Lord. We present this information to help you spiritually to prepare for Christmas. Our schedule of Christmas Masses is as follows: Christmas Eve (Thursday, December 24th) Vigil Mass at 5:00PM with the children s presentation of the Nativity Story. Midnight Mass-12AM, proceeded by the Choir s Christmas Welcome at 11:30PM Christmas Day (Friday, December 25th) Masses follow our Sunday schedule 7:30AM, 9:00AM (Italian), 10:30AM (Family), 12:15PM and 5:00PM. Please bring this information to the attention of neighbors and friends. Please bring this information to the attention of neighbors and friends ARRANGING FOR THE BAPTISM OF YOUR CHILD: Parents who wish to have their children baptized in St. Theresa Church are asked to come to the Rectory and fill out the form for the Baptism class (generally held twice a month on Thursdays at 7:00PM in the church). Parents are asked to bring the child s birth certificate to this class. Godparents are encouraged to attend, if possible. At the Baptism class, the date of the child s Baptism will be arranged. We have Baptisms every Sunday after the 12:15PM Mass (unless some other ceremony is happening in the church). Parents and their guests are asked to come to the 12:15PM Mass on the Sunday they have selected. Baptism will take place immediately after the Mass. We remind parents that they should have their children baptized as soon as possible after birth (that is, within a month or two). We want the child to have the grace of Baptism from his or her earliest weeks of life. Baptism should not be delayed until the child is older. We look forward to welcoming these children into the Church with their first sacrament, the sacrament of Baptism. MANY THANKS We are most grateful to all our wonderful parishioners who have sacrificed so generously by increasing their weekly Sunday contributions. Please know that your weekly increase is for the betterment of St. Theresa Parish, for the building up and improvement of our parish. We are most grateful to all of you who have helped to make a difference in our community. Please continue to help us in order to keep St. Theresa Parish the vital, growing parish that it is. Our parish has the lowest Sunday collection in the immediate area. We need to keep up with our neighbors. Your help is vital. Thanks for all you do! FOOD PANTRY Food is now being collected for our Food Pantry. We are asking for items such as tomato sauce, pasta, box juices or can, soups, coffee, crackers, rice, tuna fish and canned vegetables, cookies and other non perishable items that we may pass on to needy families in our community. God bless you for your kindness. NO GLASS JARS PLEASE. SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS Please support our advertisers; it is their support that makes this bulletin possible, and when you visit them, please let them know that you read their advertisement in St. Theresa s bulletin.
