2 CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX AN EASTER MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRIESTS AND DEACONS When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of James, and Salome brought spices (to the tomb) so that they might anoint him. With those words, St. Mark begins to tell us the Easter story. Notice who was there. There was Mary Magdalene, the faithful follower of Jesus, who stayed with Him on Calvary to the very end. there was the other Mary, whom St. Matthew identifies as the mother of James, and she likewise was there on Calvary and now she is here, with Mary Magdalene and Salome, to anoint the body of Jesus. Holy women were these, faithful and brave. And they were on their way to the tomb of Jesus on the first Easter morning, only to find that their world and ours had been changed, for their Crucified Lord our Crucified Lord had risen from the dead. Those were the two Mary s on the first Easter morning. But there is another. She is more important than the other two by far. Probably at that time she was a woman approaching fifty and, in a culture where a lifespan was forty years, she was considered a woman on in years. She had seen it all, this woman. Yes, she saw it all on Good Friday, for she was there every step of the way as Jesus carried His Cross, as Jesus mounted the hill of crucifixion, as Jesus suffered for our salvation. She was there for it all. But she was there for it all in a larger sense. She was there when the story began over thirty years before Good Friday when an angel came to her and asked her the most important question ever asked of a human being. Would she be the Mother of the Savior? She was a teenager back then, scholars tell us, no more than in her early teens. And she had responded with complete faith, with unparalleled love, I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word. That must have seemed so long ago and she had been there for everything that happened afterwards - fleeing to Egypt, returning to live in those beautiful years in Nazareth, then watching her Son go forth from their home to preach, to teach, to suffer, to die. For many of those years, she had her wonderful husband with her, dear Joseph, the carpenter, the just man, the foster father of her son. But Joseph was gone now and here she was a widow losing her Son, losing her Son on a Cross of shame. Yes, she was there for all of it for this great drama in which she was such a prominent player. Her name is the sweetest name that ever a woman had, Mary, Mother of Jesus, Mary, Mother of Easter. The gospel does not specifically tell us what happened immediately after Jesus rose from the dead. But the tradition of the Church has been strong. Tradition tells us that the first person that the Risen Christ appeared to after His glorious resurrection was Mary His Mother. Perhaps the gospel does not record this because some things are too intimate, too precious to be spoken of, like a Son speaking to His Mother. Can you imagine what Jesus said to His Mother? Did He thank Mary for being both His loving Mother and His best and most faithful follower? Did He thank her for walking with Him as He carried the Cross and giving Him, humanly speaking, the strength to go on to save the world? Did He thank His Mother for standing there on Calvary hill she who was no priest joining in offering her Priestly Son for the forgiveness of sins? And what did Mary say to Him? What can we imagine the Mother said to the Son? Did she cover Him with motherly tears of joy, hoping that her loving tears would wipe away the memories of what she had seen Him suffer? Did she thank Him for saving each of us, the least and the greatest, the good and the not so good, all now her children given to her by her Son? Did she worship Him as the Lord of all, the conqueror of sin, the victor over death? Did any of that happen? Or did they just look at one another, Mother and Son, with eyes that looked into each other s hearts, with a love no words can possibly describe? Our late Holy Father Pope John Paul II has said of Mary, In the Church s pilgrimage through space and time and even more through the story of our souls, Mary is there. And the late Pope invited us to join Mary in looking at the face of Jesus her Son. What better thing can we do at Easter? Look at the face of Jesus. Look not with physical eyes. Look with the heart. Ask Mary s help to look with her eyes, to look with love upon the face of her Easter Son. Do you want to know what Easter is all about? Turn to Mary. Look with Mary. She was there. She knows it all. She will help you to look at the face of Jesus. She will help you to see eternal life. May Our Blessed Mother be with all of you on this Easter day. May she help you to love Easter. May she help you to love our Easter Lord. Be assured that you and your loved ones are remembered in our Masses on this Easter Day. Father Thomas B. 3 EASTER SUNDAY AN EASTER MESSAGE FROM POPE FRANCIS We come to share in the joy of Easter, the central mystery of our faith. May the power of Christ s Resurrection reach every person especially those who are suffering - and all the situations most in need of trust and hope. Christ has fully triumphed over evil once and for all, but it is up to us, to the people of every time in history, to welcome this victory into our life and into the actual situations of history and society. For this reason it seems to me important to emphasize what we ask God today in the liturgy. O God, who give constant increase/to your Church by new offspring,/grant that your servants may hold fast in their lives/to the Sacrament they have received in faith. It is true, yes, Baptism that makes us children of God and the Eucharist that unites us to Christ must become life, that is, they must be expressed in attitudes, behavior, gestures and decisions. The grace contained in the Sacraments of Easter is an enormous potential for the renewal of our personal existence, of family life, of social relations. However everything passes through the human heart: if I let myself be touched by the grace of the Risen Christ, if I let him change me in that aspect of mine which is not good, which can hurt me and others, I allow the victory of Christ to be affirmed in my life, to broaden its beneficial action. This is the power of grace! nothing. Without grace we can do nothing! And with the grace of Baptism and of Eucharistic Communion I can become an instrument of God s mercy, of that beautiful mercy of God. To express in life the sacrament we have received: dear brothers and sisters, this is our daily duty, but I would also say our daily joy! The joy of feeling we are instruments of Christ s grace, like branches of the vine that is Christ himself, brought to life by the sap of his Spirit! Let us pray together, in the name of the dead and Risen Lord and through the intercession of Mary Most Holy, that the Paschal Mystery may work profoundly within us and in our time so that hatred may give way to love, falsehood to truth, revenge to forgiveness, and sadness to joy. THE WAY OF LIGHT (VIA LUCIS): During Lent we followed the fourteen Stations of the Cross, our remembrance of the Lord Jesus carrying the cross and dying for us. Father Peter Cameron has written the Stations of light (Via Lucis) to remember our Risen Lord. We present them here for your prayerful reflection. VIA LUCIS First Station: Jesus Rises from the Dead At your rising, the peace, the forgiveness, the display of your wounds are healing mercy for me. Second Station: The Disciples Find the Empty Tomb The emptiness inside me is a crushing sore. The mercy of your empty tomb frees me and fills me. Third Station: Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene To a frantic Mary who wants to carry away your body, you appear in Risen mercy to carry her away. Fourth Station: Jesus Walks with the Disciples to Emmaus To the two discouraged disciples, your mercy appears as a sudden accompaniment. Walk with me! Fifth Station: Jesus Reveals Himself in the Breaking of Bread All that our heart craves abides in the Last Supper bread breaking. Break through my forgetfulness! Sixth Station: Jesus Appears to the Disciples You appear in you humanity: eating, consoling, ridding fear. By your mercy, help me be more human. Seventh Station: Jesus Confers on His Disciples the Power to Forgive Sins You give, not the ability to live without sinning, but the power to forgive sin the greatest mercy. Eighth Station: Jesus Confirms Thomas in Faith In your mercy, doubt will not gain the upper hand. Touching the wound in your hand reclaims us. Ninth Station: Jesus Appears to His Disciples on the Shore of Lake Galilee When we are adrift and dispirited, you come as a surprise, cooking us breakfast, calling us children. Tenth Station: Jesus Confers Primacy on Peter The unity the Church needs, you provide in the Successor of Peter, its visible source and foundation. Eleventh Station: Jesus Entrusts His Disciples with a Universal Mission I believe because of Christian witnesses who shared their faith. Make me a missionary of mercy! Twelfth Station: Jesus Ascends into Heaven You ascend in your humanity to heaven to give us access to the Father s house and to God s life. Thirteenth Station: Mary and the Disciples Await the Holy Spirit s Pentecost Thank you for the gift of the One who reminds us of all you said and who forms us in the life of prayer. Fourteenth Station: Jesus Sends the Spirit Promised by the Father to His Disciples Lost though we are in a state of deformity, the Holy Spirit restores our original beauty and fills us with grace. Father Peter John Cameron, O.P.

4 MARCH 27, 2016 NEXT SUNDAY IS DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY Our late Holy Father Pope St. John Paul II proclaimed the Sunday after Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday, recalling the mercy shown to all of us. Our Lord Himself requested this Feast Day of the Divine Mercy when He appeared to St. Faustina Kowalska, a Polish sister. He wanted this Feast to be celebrated to remind us that His mercy has no end. That is a message which so many wait to hear. We particularly celebrate the Divine Mercy of Jesus as we celebrate this special Year of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis. How should we prepare for the Feast of Divine Mercy next Sunday? Jesus told St. Faustina that this Feast of Mercy would be a special day when all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened. (Diary 699) Our Lord made a great promise to all those souls who would go to Confession and then receive Him in Holy Communion on the Feast of His Mercy, now called Divine Mercy Sunday. Jesus said The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain the complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. (699) I want to grant a complete pardon to the souls that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion on the Feast of My Mercy. (Diary 1109) We want to encourage everyone to take advantage of this incredible promise and the additional Plenary Indulgence on this great Feast of Mercy Divine Mercy Sunday. We want you to benefit fully from these promises, and we also want you to notify all of your family and friends about them too! The Image of The Divine Mercy, which Our Lord requested to be solemnly blessed and venerated on this day, is displayed in our church. Pope John Paul II said that the image portrays the Risen Jesus Christ bringing Mercy to the whole world. Our Lord said I want the image to be solemnly blessed on the first Sunday after Easter, and I want it to be venerated publicly so that every soul may know about it. I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish. (Diary 341, 48) Please take time to visit with this Image of The Divine Mercy. Jesus said to St. Faustina, I am offering people a vessel with which they are to keep coming for graces to the fountain of mercy. That vessel is this image with the signature: Jesus, I trust in You. (Diary 327) The two rays denote Blood and Water. The pale ray stands for the Water which makes souls righteous. The red ray stands for the Blood which is the life of souls. These two rays issued forth from the very depths of My tender mercy when My agonized Heart was opened by a lance on the cross Happy is the one who will dwell in their shelter, for the just hand of God shall not lay hold of him. (Diary 299) About the Feast Day, Jesus said...tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon the souls who approach the Fount of My Mercy. On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy. (Diary 699) HONORING THE DIVINE MERCY OF JESUS: Veneration of the Relics of the Saint of Mercy, St. Faustina: DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY will be observed at St. Patrick s Old Cathedral (Mulberry Street) next weekend, the Feast of the Divine Mercy. The relics of St. Faustina, to whom Our Lord appeared, will be honored, with Mass there on Saturday, April 2 at 5:30PM followed by all night veneration. Next Sunday, April 3rd, the relics will be honored there beginning at 2:00PM. The relics will also be honored on Wednesday, April 6 at St. Patrick s Cathedral ( Fifth Avenue) and on Friday, April 8 at St. Barnabas Church here in The Bronx. For further details, you may consult DIVINE MERCY CONFERENCE The Divine Mercy Conference will be held at Cardinal Spellman High School on Saturday, April 16th from 9:00AM to 5:30PM. It will feature speakers on the Divine Mercy devotion, confession, Eucharistic Adoration and Mass. For information and registration, contact

5 BLESSED PEDRO CALUNGSOD (c ) Feast Day: April 2 LAZARUS MARCH 27 Lazarus, the friend of Jesus, the brother of Martha and Mary, was the one of whom the Jews said, See how much he loved him. In their sight Jesus raised his friend Lazarus from the dead. Legends abound about the life of Lazarus after the death and resurrection of Jesus. He is supposed to have left a written account of what he saw in the next world before he was called back to life. Some say he followed Peter into Syria. Another story is that despite being put into a leaking boat by the Jews at Jaffa, he, his sisters and others landed safely in Cyprus. There he died peacefully after serving as bishop for 30 years. A church was built in his honor in Constantinople and some of his reputed relics were transferred there in 890. A Western legend has the oarless boat arriving in Gaul. There he was bishop of Marseilles, was martyred after making a number of converts and was buried in a cave. His relics were transferred to the new cathedral in Autun in It is certain there was early devotion to the saint. Around the year 390, the pilgrim lady Etheria talks of the procession that took place on the Saturday before Palm Sunday at the tomb where Lazarus had been raised from the dead. In the West, Passion Sunday was called Dominica de Lazaro, and Augustine tells us that in Africa the Gospel of the raising of Lazarus was read at the office of Palm Sunday. Many people who have had a near-death experience report losing all fear of death. When Lazarus died a second time, perhaps he was without fear. He must have been sure that Jesus, the friend with whom he had shared many meals and conversations, would be waiting to raise him again. We don t share Lazarus firsthand knowledge of returning from the grave. Nevertheless, we too have shared meals and conversations with Jesus, who waits to raise us, too. THE REALITY OF EASTER Easter is a time of year filled with special candy-peeps, jelly beans, chocolate rabbits, and colored eggs. Everyone from adults to children look forward to new outfits and shoes. Everything is geared to fun; bright colors and the nearness of spring! The Religious community also, from flowers, pressed vestments, robes and linens clean and polish everything that is true. The reality of Easter is really the new message given to us by the death and resurrection of the Son of God-Our Lord Jesus Christ who gave His life to save the entire world from their sins; and through belief in Him, a new life for all of us!!! Respectfully Written By, Walter C. Wilhelm PETITION BOOK Have you noticed our Petition Book in the vestibule of the Church? Every Saturday before the 5:00PM Mass, the petitions entered into the book for that week are brought up to the altar of the Blessed Mother, where they remain for all the weekend Masses. Please pray for these intentions. AMONG THE PATRONS of youth, Blessed Pedro Calungsod from Cebu, Philippines, greatly exemplifies the courage that often marks the direct response young people have to Christ s call. A native of Visayas and born in 1654, Calungsod embraced his faith and received an education from Spanish Jesuits. One of these Jesuits, Father Diego Luis de San Vitores, invited 14-yearold Calungsod, who was already a skilled sacristan, to travel with him to the Marianas Islands and help evangelize the native Chamoru people of Guam. Despite difficult living conditions, Claungsod and Father San Vitores enjoyed good relations with the Chamorros for two years. The natives gradually converted to Christianity, and the missionaries established Guam s first Catholic church. The second half of their ministry in Guam, however, proved to be more adverse. In time, Clungsod and Father San Vitores fell out of favor with the Chamorros, who blamed the missionaries for the spread of new illnesses and accused them of attempting to dissolve the Chamoru culture. On April 2, 1672, these sentiments escalated when Father San Vitores baptized a child in danger of death with only the mother s consent. Mata pang, the infant s father, wrongly believed the baptism water was poison because of a malicious rumor. He was so enraged that he enlisted help to kill both Calungsod and Father San Vitores. The young and agile Calungsod could have escaped if he had left Father San Vitores behind. Instead, Calungsod remained with his companion because he was, as Pope John Paul II noted during Calungsod s March 2000 beatification, a good soldier of Christ [who] preferred to die at the missionary s side. Today, Blessed Pedro Calungsod intercedes for the young, for those full of courage and hope who seek to respond generously to Christ. CATHOLIC BETHLEHEM CHRISTIAN FAMILIES Representatives from Catholic Bethlehem Christian Families will be here on the Weekend of April 9th & 10th, 2016 after all Masses, to ask for your help for the people of the Holy Land in Bethlehem. These families, sixty years ago, made up 18% of the population. Due to recent events in the Middle East, it has caused these families to face devastating economical strain, and caused the population to decrease to less than 2% in the Holy Land. These families have relied on the income from their sales of religious hand carved olive wood artifacts. So they have come to the USA to try to help support these families by bringing their articles here to sell in the USA. All the proceeds from sales will be sent back to the families of the Holy Land so that they may be able to keep their homes and provide for their families. The last few years were very tough for the Christian families, and this is the only source of income for them.
