2 CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN There are only three holy people whose birthdays we celebrate in the Church. Of course first and foremost is the Birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ at Christmas. Then there is the Feast of the Birth of Our Blessed Mother Mary on September 8. And the third birthday feast is the one we celebrate today, the Birth of St. John the Baptist who, as his father Zechariah said when he was born was the prophet of the Most High who went before the Lord to prepare His way. So often we hear about St. John the Baptist. As you recall, we heard so much about him during the weeks of Advent. We call John the Advent prophet because he helped us to prepare for the coming of the One whom he pointed out as the Lamb of God. And today we honor him by celebrating his birth to the holy couple Zechariah and Elizabeth. It is almost as if the church is telling us that we can never get enough of John s message, we can never get enough of how he tells us to look to Jesus, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. All of us are called to be like St. John the Baptist. Let me mention two ways: First, all of us have our mission and then, secondly, all of us are called to point out Jesus to others. First, all of us have our mission. John had his mission of proclaiming who Jesus is, using the words we hear every Sunday right before Holy Communion time, Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. John the Baptist knew his place, his place in God s plan. He saw his mission and accepted it and did it. The Lord asks each one of us to do the same. He has given to every one of us a mission in life, a mission He has not given to anyone else, and He gives us the grace and the strength to do it. We may not understand it at first. We may be confused about what God wants from us. But if we trust him, He will help us accomplish that mission, whatever the problems may be. The late Detective Steven McDonald was a man who knew his mission in life, as did St. John the Baptist. Steven was one of the most edifying persons in our city, a proud member of the NYPD. You know that more than thirty years ago, in the line of duty, he was shot and paralyzed for the rest of his life. Steven could have lived the rest of his life in anger, in bitterness, even in hatred. But he did not. He saw that God had a plan for him, despite his handicap, and he trusted that God would give him the grace to do it. Instead of wallowing in sorrow and even hatred, he forgave the man who paralyzed him, giving a shining example to all of us about what Jesus tells us about forgiving one another. He could have spent the rest of his life doing nothing, just surviving, but not really living. Steven refused to do that. He accepted his mission of speaking to thousands of people, particularly young people, teaching them the message of peace. I had the privilege of meeting him when he spoke to a high school assembly. He spoke of his life, of how something bad happened to him, but how he tried to bring good out of it. He told the young peoplewho listened to his every wordthat they must be messengers of peace and he gave them an assignmentto recite a decade of the rosary each day for peace in troubled hearts. Steven McDonald drew strength from the rosary, strength to do the mission that God gave to him. And as a result, this paralyzed man had such impact on the lives of so many people. He was certainly the John the Baptist of forgiveness and peace. That was the first thing St. John the Baptist teaches usto accept our mission from God. But then he taught us a second lesson, equally importantand that second lesson is this: all of us are called to proclaim Jesus Christ. Almost forty years ago, in 1979, Pope St. John Paul II visited New York and spoke to thousands of young people in Madison Square Garden. He gave them and us the same message as John the Baptist did, the message that we must proclaim Jesus Christ. The Pope said this, The Church needs you. The world needs you, for the world needs Christ and you belong to Him. The world we live in tries to forget God. It needs you to proclaim, with your kindness and charity, with your concern for others, with your uplifting words, that Christ is here, inviting every person to come to His love. Rememberyou may be and instrument of God s grace to some other person. In the Pope s words, The world needs Christ and you belong to Him. At the end of his Funeral Mass, Steven McDonald s son Conor, who followed his father s footsteps in serving our city in the police department, said that his father wanted to make sure that his time on earth was not wasted and he made his mission in life to have all of us realize that love must win. Is that not our mission too, the mission of St. John the Baptist and the mission of every one of usto proclaim that love must win and that love s other name is Jesus, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Father Thomas B. Derivan THURSDAY EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Our Thursday Adoration and Benediction will be discontinued during the summer, beginning this Thursday, June 28th. It will resume after Labor Day. The 12Noon Mass will be offered as usual, with the Novena prayers to the Sacred Heart recited afterwards. 4 JUNE 24, 2018 JUNE 27 SAINT CYRIL OF ALEXANDRIA (378444) Saints are not born with halos around their heads. Cyril, recognized as a great teacher of the Church, began his career as archbishop of Alexandria, Egypt, with impulsive, often violent, actions. He pillaged and closed the churches of the Novatian heretics who required those who denied the faith to be repbaptizedparticipated in the deposing of Saint John Chrysostom; and confiscated Jewish property, expelling the Jews from Alexandria in retaliation for their attacks on Christians. Cyril s importance for theology and Church history lies in his championing the cause of orthodoxy against the heresy of Nestorius, who taught that in Christ there were two persons, one human and one divine. The controversy centered around the two natures in Christ. Nestorius would not agree to the title Godbearer for Mary. He preferred Christbearer, saying there are two distinct persons in Christdivine and humanjoined only by a moral union. He said Mary was not the mother of God but only of the man Christ, whose humanity was only a temple of God. Nestorianism implied that the humanity of Christ was a mere disguise. Presiding as the pope s representative at the Council of Ephesus in 431, Cyril condemned Nestorianism and proclaimed Mary truly the Godbearer the mother of the one Person who is truly God and truly human. In the confusion that followed, Cyril was deposed and imprisoned for three months, after which he was welcomed back to Alexandria. Besides needing to soften some of his opposition to those who had sided with Nestorius, Cyril had difficulties with some of his own allies, who thought he had gone too far, sacrificing not only language but orthodoxy. Until his death, his policy of moderation kept his extreme partisans under control. On his deathbed, despite pressure, he refused to condemn the teacher of Nestorius. Lives of the saints are valuable not only for the virtue they reveal but also for the less admirable qualities that also appear. Holiness is a gift of God to us as human beings. Life is a process. We respond to God s gift, but sometimes with a lot of zigzagging. If Cyril had been more patient and diplomatic, the Nestorian church might not have risen and maintained power so long. But even saints must grow out of immaturity, narrowness, and selfishness. It is because theyand wedo grow, that we are truly saints, persons who live the life of God. Thank you for your help with this. UPDATE OF INFORMATION FOR ALUMNI & FORMER PARISHIONERS Name If alumnus, year Address Telephone Cell Comments or other information: JUNE 24 THE NATIVITY OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST Jesus called John the greatest of all those who had preceded him: I tell you, among those born of women, no one is greater than John But John would have agreed completely with what Jesus added: [Y]et the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he (Luke 7:28). John spent his time in the desert, an ascetic. He began to announce the coming of the Kingdom, and to call everyone to a fundamental reformation of life. His purpose was to prepare the way for Jesus. His baptism, he said, was for repentance. But one would come who would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. John was not worthy even to untie his sandals. His attitude toward Jesus was: He must increase; I must decrease (John 3:30). John was humbled to find among the crowd of sinners who came to be baptized the one whom he already knew to be the Messiah. I need to be baptized by you (Matthew 3:14b). But Jesus insisted,, Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness (Matthew 3:15b). Jesus, true and Humble, human as well as eternal God, was eager to do what was required of any good Jew. Jesus thus publicly entered the community of those awaiting the Messiah. By making himself part of that community, he made it truly messianic. The greatness of John, his pivotal place in the history of salvation, is seen in the great emphasis Luke gives to the announcement of his birth and the event itselfboth made prominently parallel to the same occurrences in the life of Jesus. John attracted countless people to the banks of the Jordan, and it occurred to some people that he might be the Messiah. But he constantly deferred to Jesus, even to sending away some of his followers to become the first disciples of Jesus. Perhaps John s idea of the coming of the Kingdom of God was not being perfectly fulfilled in the public ministry of Jesus. For whatever reason, when he was in prison he sent his disciples to ask Jesus if he was the Messiah. Jesus answer showed that the Messiah was to be a figure like that of the Suffering Servant in Isaiah. John himself would share in the pattern of messianic suffering, losing his life to the revenge of Herodias. John challenges us Christians to the fundamental attitude of Christianitytotal dependence on the Father, in Christ. Except for the Mother of God, no one had a higher function in the unfolding of salvation. Yet the least in the kingdom, Jesus said, is greater than he, for the pure gift that the Father gives. The attractiveness as well as the austerity of John, his fierce courage Please continue to share the peace and joy of our faith with others. There are so many that are in the need of Jesus. Can you be for all of us a living sign to all our parishioners and neighbors, and tell them for us we need them and love them. Someone may hear and accept the invitation from you and return home to worship the Lord with us. So please invite a friend, relative, or neighbor to come with you to Church next Sunday. God will do the rest. Let us share our treasure of faith with others. FOOD PANTRY Food is now being collected for our Food Pantry.
