2 CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN Once again in the gospel today, Our Lord speaks about the cost of following Him. Last week, you will recall, He told in the gospel not to fear those who could destroy the body, for our heavenly Father has us in His loving care. Whatever happens, even persecution, even suffering and even death, The Father has us in His loving embrace. Today in the gospel, the Lord continues to teach us about the cost of being His disciples. We must be ready to take up our Cross. We must be ready even to lose our lives. For whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. Our Lord does not hide the truth from us. He did not hide the truth from His apostles, did not hide the truth from any Christians who have followed Him for the past twenty centuries. He does not hide the truth from us. And the truth is the CrossHis Cross and our Cross. If we want to be His disciples, we must take up the Cross and follow Him. During this time we celebrate the feast of saints who knew the cost of discipleship, even to the point of giving their lives for the Lord whom they served. Last Wednesday we celebrated the Feast of the Apostles Peter and Paul. Great St. Peter, the fisherman, the first Pope, denier of Christ, leader of the Apostles, first Bishop of Rome, crucified upside down because he felt unworthy to die in the same way as his Master. And St. Paul, persecutor of the Christians, converted by the vision of the Lord Jesus on the road to Damascus, Paul the great missionary who established the early churches, Paul who witnessed for Christ in Rome and was beheaded for the Lord whom he served. Two marvelous saints, both of whom knew the meaning of the gospel; words, to be ready to take up the cross, to be ready to lose one s life and find it in the glory of heaven. We celebrated Peter and Paul last Wednesday and then on the following day we celebrated the Feast of the Martyrs of the Church of Rome, the countless other Christians who, for three centuries, gave their lives for the sake of Christ in Rome. We know some of their names Cecilia, Agnes, Ignatius. But many others are not known to us by name. They are known, of course, to the Lord, and we honor them because of their sacrifice and because of what they teach us. These Martyrs were witnesses to Christ. That is what the word martyr means. They witnessed to Christ in life and in death. And that is what they teach us. Most probably we will not be called to die to Christ. But we are called to live for Christ to proclaim our faith by word and deed and example, to take up our cross and follow in Jesus footsteps. Our late Pope John Paul II said, The grace to die for Christ is a grace given to a few; the grace to live for Christ is a grace given to all. When you carry your Cross, when you face life s troubles and hardships with God at your side, when you try to help bear their crosses too, then you are being a witness for Christ, even as the martyrs of the early Church were. Like them, you are giving glory to God. One of the saints of the Roman persecution was barely a teenager when she died as a martyr. For Christ. Her name was Anysia. Like so many Christians, on Sunday morning, Anysia would secretly leave her home and go through the streets of Rome to the underground places called the catacombs where Christians gathered for Mass. Everything had to be in utter secrecy lest the Roman soldiers find them out. Despite the risk, Anysia went to Mass. Nothing could stop her. Her love for Jesus in Holy Communion was so great. But one Sunday, as she went through the streets, she was stopped by a Roman soldier, sword in hand. Who are you? he said. And Where are you going? And this young girl gave this answer. I am the servant of the Lord. I am going to my Lord s assembly. Those were her final words as the soldier put her to death. I am the servant of the Lord. I am going to the Lord s assembly. What a marvelous story! What a marvelous witness of faith! St. Anysia knew the cost of being Jesus follower. She was ready to lose her life and find it in eternity. May this saint and all the saints help us in our journey of life. May they help us to be, as Anysia said she was, servants of the Lord, worshipping Him in this assembly. And may they help us to bear our Cross and follow in the footsteps of Jesus Our Lord. Father Thomas B.Derivan INDEPENDENCE DAY PRAYER May the glory of Independence Day remain in mind in heart may we cherish our hardwon freedom that it never falls apart. Because those who walked before us believed in freedom s cause so much we can carry forth a torch of honor and In God We Trust. That first Independence Day now more than two centuries past must live forever in our thoughts never forgottennever a lapse. It is a precious land we hold in safekeeping for our children that they, as we, may enjoy lives bountiful, worth living. May God s blessings ever ring out over all our land a toast of praise we raise today Americans join hand in hand! Written by Susan Helene Kramer PRAYER FOR OUR MEN AND WOMEN IN MILITARY SERVICE O Prince of Peace, we humbly ask Your protection for all our men and women in military service. Give them unflinching courage to defend with honor, dignity and devotion the rights of all who are imperiled by injustice and evil. Guard our churches, our homes, our schools, our hospitals, our factories, our buildings and all those within from harm and peril. Protect our land and its peoples from enemies within and without. Grant an early peace with victory founded upon justice. Instill in the hearts and minds of men and women everywhere a firm purpose to live forever in peace and good will toward all. Amen. 3 THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN II: A THOUGHT FOR JULY 4TH How blessed we are to be able to celebrate July 4th, our 241st birthday as a nation! Happy Birthday, USA! Just saying that reminds us that, in so many parts of the world, the freedom that we celebrateand sometimes take for grantedis a distant dream. So many people still live under tyrannical governments. In so many places, the simple right to practice religion is denied and Christians often suffer for simply going to Mass on Sunday. As we celebrate our Independence Day, let us pray for those who wish to be free. May the Lord help them one day to enjoy the blessings that we celebrate on July 4th. July 4th should be a reminder to us that we are one people. There is only one USA. Whatever our background, whatever our national heritage, we are one people, blessed with freedom. Unfortunately in the past months, there has been a great deal of disunity. Differences of political opinion in many cases have created barriers among people and these should not exist in America the Beautiful. There isand always has beenroom for differences of opinion. That itself is an expression of our freedom. That was true 241 years ago when our nation was just an idea, not a reality. There were differences of opinion then, different ideas, different approaches to what freedom meant. But Americans then came together and accomplished a common goal, as Abraham Lincoln long afterwards would say, Government of the people, by the people and for the people. As we celebrate our independence this week, let us pray that we will rediscover that sense of unity; that we can disagree, but still be united in purpose; that we all love our country and that we are all able to say, God bless America, land that I love. 4 JULY 2, 2017 THANK YOU FOR OUR 21ST ANNUAL ST. THERESA FEAST Our 21st annual St. Theresa Family Feast, as you know, was held from June 21 to June 25. Our Feast this year took on a new focus. We wanted the Feast to be a celebration of our family life, our St. Theresa family. We wanted it to be familyfriendly with events for small children, as well as the traditional food, games and rides. We are grateful to the many comments we received, particularly about the family focus, the emphasis that this is an enjoyable community event and the change of the dates (from July to June, right after school closes) and the hours (from 5PM to 9pm). I thank the many people who have given us constructive comments and suggestions and we have tried to incorporate those ideas into the Feast. As with everything, we try to improve and I hope that has been achieved. We will continue to try to make the Feast even better in the years to come. I want to thank the many people who made the Feast possible. I cannot possibly mention everyone, but I have to mention the following Our Feast Chairman Joey Antico, deserves tremendous praise for his leadership, both before and during the Feast. Joey willingly accepted the responsibility of coordinating all the Feast preparations, taking care of all details and helping to keep things running smoothly. Thanks, Joey, for a job well done!! Our Feast Committee met on a regular basis to prepare for the Feast and did an admirable job. They offered fine ideas and were ready to help in every way. We must mention Joe and Maryann Maiorana who have helped with the Feast these years and who were here once again this year to help. Special thanks to Mrs. Fanelli, our School Principal, and the many teachers who were here to help. That fact says a great deal about our school, having so many of our teachers helping above and beyond the call of duty. We also had the generous help of our Parents Association both in the Kiddie Zone in the school gym and in our outside game booths, organized by the indefatigable Mrs. Antonia Bruno. I am most grateful to Lou Aurrichio and the past Feast Committee for their input in this year s Feast. Lou and many of the others carried the ball for twenty years. We thank them for helping the next generation of Feast volunteers. We thank all who organized our Procession on Sunday afternoon, which was truly a spiritual event honoring our holy patroness St. Theresa. And of course we had our beautiful Concert, organized by our Musical Director Ms. Helena Kim, and featuring our Adult and Children s Choirs and the St. Frances de Chantal Church Choir. What a beautiful musical conclusion to our Feast. Our Rectory Staff, Cathy Zingaro, Angela Stoyka and Bernadette Donoghue did so much in preparing for the Feast in the behind the scenes work that was so necessary. We are blessed to have these ladies who love St. Theresa s Parish so much. We were delighted that the winners of all three prizes in the Grand Raffle have been and still are parishioners or friends of our church. Thanks to all who took chances on the Raffle. We must not forget the wonderful help of the officers of the 45th Precinct and their Auxiliary who were here in great numbers throughout the Feast. They are certainly New York s Finest and we thank them for all they do for our community. Thanks to our many sponsors for once again showing their support for our Feast. Likewise thank you to our vendors, several of whom are neighborhood people. Our sponsors and vendors helped to show that the Feast is indeed a community event. We thank our neighbors on the streets affected by the Feast. We realize that the Feast presents some inconvenience, but we thank you for your understanding. Finally, of course, thank you to you, our parishioners, for making the Feast both a social and financial success. As you know, the proceeds of the Feast help our parish to keep going. Whether you came one or several nights for the food or the rides or bought a Raffle ticket or 50/50 ticket or came to the Kiddie Zone or enjoyed our musical entertainment, thank you for showing, through our Feast, that we are indeed St. Therese Strong. Father Thomas B. Derivan HEAVENLY HUMOR Two little boys were known troublemakers, stealing everything they could get their hands, even from the church. One day a priest stopped one of the boys and asked, "Where is God?" The boy shrugged and the priest repeated, "Where is God?" The boy ran out of the cathedral crying to his home where he hid in a closet. Eventually his brother found him and asked, "What's wrong?" The crying boy replied, "We're in trouble now! God is missing and they think we took him!"

5 WE CATHOLICS BELIEVE During the summer months, we are presenting in our bulletin an excellent summary our Catholic faith from Franciscan Communications. This may be helpful to you and also to someone who may have asked you for information about the faith. Please pass it on to him or her. Today s article is: THE MYSTERY CALLED TRINITY In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit We believe in One God. Yet we believe that we experience God in three distinct ways. The first is a Father, or Creator. But Catholic Christians also know God in the flesh, in the form of a human being named Jesus. He is called the Son of God. Jesus no longer walks the earth. But we experience his love, the love of God, in a special way we call the Holy Spirit. None of this is easy to explain or to understand. The earliest Christians argued it often. Giving the name of God to three Persons seems, on the surface, to be worshiping many gods. We call this experience of three Persons in One God the Blessed Trinity, and it is a great mystery of our faith. MYSTERIESWhen we use the word mystery in the context of believing, we re not talking about a puzzle that, however knotty, can be solved by hard thinking. A mystery of faith is a puzzle too deep to be solved, a reality that exists without explanation. At the Councils of Nicea and Constantinople in the 4th century, where our Creed was developed, the bishops of the Church prayed over the question of the Trinity. Their careful formulation was based on the Greek philosophy of the time, but it can be stated simply this way: there is One God, and in One God are three divine PersonsFather, Son and Holy Spirit. Well, maybe simply isn t the best description. Throughout the centuries, Christians have struggled to grasp this mystery and communicate it to others. Legend has it that St. Patrick, despairing of a way to preach the Trinity to Irish tribes, plucked a shamrock from the ground at his feet. He pointed to the tiny plant: one stem, one plant, yet three leaves, each equal. Sometimes this kind of inspiration, the urge to find symbols, is the closest we can come to plumbing the depths of mystery. JULY 6 ST. MARIA GORETTI ( ) One of the largest crowds ever assembled for a canonization 250,000symbolized the reaction of millions touched by the simple story of Maria Goretti. She was the daughter of a poor Italian tenant farmer, had no chance to go to school, never learned to read or write. When she made her First Communion not long before her death at age 12, she was one of the larger and somewhat backward members of the class. On a hot afternoon in July, Maria was sitting at the top of the stairs of her house, mending a shirt. She was not quite 12 years old, but physically mature. A cart stopped outside, and a neighbor, Alessandro, 18 years old, ran up the stairs. He seized her and pulled her into a bedroom. She struggled and tried to call for help, gasping that she would be killed rather than submit. No, God does not wish it. It is a sin. You would go to hell for it. Alessandro began striking at her blindly with a long dagger. She was taken to a hospital. Her last hours were marked by the usual simple compassion of the goodconcern about where her mother would sleep, forgiveness of her murder (she had been in fear of him, but did not say anything lest she cause trouble to his family) and her devout welcoming of Viaticum. She died about 24 hours after the attack. Her murder was sentenced to 30 years in prison. For a long time he was unrepentant and surly. One night he had a dream or vision of Maria, gathering flowers and offering them to him. His life changed. When he was released after 27 years, his first act was to go to beg the forgiveness of Maria s mother. Devotion to the young martyr grew, miracles were worked, and in less than half a century she was canonized. At her beatification in 1947, her mother (then 82), two sisters and a brother appeared with Pope Pius XII on the balcony of St. Peter s. Three years later, at her canonization, a 66yearold Alessandro Serenelli knelt among the quartermillion people and cried tears of joy. Maria may have had trouble with catechism, but she had no trouble with faith. God s will was holiness, decency, respect for one s body, absolute obedience, total trust. In a complex world, her faith was simple: It is a privilege to be loved by God, and to love himat any cost. As the virtue of chastity dies the death of a thousand qualifications, she is a breath of sweet fresh air. Even if she had not been a martyr, she would still have been a saint, so holy was her everyday life (Cardinal Salotti). PETITION BOOK Have you noticed our Petition Book in the vestibule of the Church? Every Saturday before the 5:00PM Mass, the petitions entered into the book for that week are brought up to the altar of the Blessed Mother, where they remain for all the weekend Masses. Please pray for these intentions. MANY THANKS We are most grateful to all our wonderful parishioners who have sacrificed so generously by increasing their weekly Sunday Contributions. Please know that your weekly increase is for the betterment of St. Theresa Parish, for the building up and improvement of our parish. We are most grateful to all of you who have helped to make a difference in our community. Please continue to help us in order to keep St. Theresa Parish the vital, growing parish that it is.
