THERESA, BRONX SEPTEMBER 26, 2010 TWENTY SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Many centuries ago, a Hebrew poet wrote a psalm that begins with the line: How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, mighty God. He said that concerning the temple which King Solomon built in Jerusalem. To him it was the most beautiful and the most sacred place on earth. It was the house where God lived. To visit the temple was to be in the very presence of the Lord. But that beautiful and sacred building is no longer there. It was first destroyed in 586 BC by the invading armies of Babylon. Some seventy years later, it was rebuilt. Then in 70 AD, it was finally destroyed by the Romans and has never again been rebuilt. So that leaves us with a very important question: where does God now live? I heard about a little child who had obviously been pondering this same mystery. One day he asked, Mom, where is God.? The mother replied, Darling, God is everywhere. The little child thought about that for a moment and then said, But I want Him to be somewhere. My guess is that most of us feel the same way about God. It was not enough for us to think of God as a vague abstraction who is everywhere. There are times when we want Him to be somewhere, so we can go there and know that we are in His presence. That is why King Solomon built the temple in Jerusalem. It was a place where people could meet with God. That is also the reason that people built the beautiful Church of St. Theresa in Pelham Bay. In our minds, we know that God cannot be confined to any one place, however beautiful it may be and however sacred it may seem. It is impossible to localize the Infinite God, by His very nature, must be everywhere. In our minds, we know that. But in our hearts, we nevertheless have a need for Him to be somewhere. We want there to be a place in our community where we walk and talk a little more softly a place where, in a very special way, we sense the presence of Him who is always with us wherever we may be. So with centuries of historical precedent, we call that building the house of God in our midst. He really lives there. It has been consecrated to His worship and service. To walk or to drive by St. Theresa Church is to be reminded of God s presence in the world and in Pelham Bay. And to enter the Church is to feel His presence. From personal experience we know what the psalmist meant when he said, How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, mighty God. For this reason we have tried our best to keep the doors of our Church opened for most of the day. We thank God for that army of volunteers who come each day so that our Church doors remain open to anyone who needs to be in the house of God. What a wonderful truth, How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, mighty God.. For this reason we encourage our parish families to bring the children often to the house of God to the Church of St. Theresa. What a wonderful truth for the children to learn! But they will never know it unless we bring the children to the house of God. What a difference it will make! HOLY NAME SOCIETY BUS TRIP TO ATLANTIC CITY ST. THERESA FEAST OCTOBER 1, 2010 St. Theresa feast day is Friday, October 1, Roses will be given out after the 8:00AM and 9:00AM Masses ST. THERESA HOME-SCHOOL ASSOCIATION The St. Theresa Home-School Association is bringing back the Holiday Flea Market on Saturday, November 13, 2010 in the school auditorium. We are seeking vendors who would like to rent a table. The cost of a table rental is $50 per Wall Table and $40 per Center Table. All tables are first come first serve. Contracts are available in the Rectory or by contacting Gina Pesca, HSA President at StTheresaSchHSA@gmail.com. Send in your contract and payment to the Rectory CONFESSIONS are heard every Saturday from 4:00PM to 5:00PM or by appointment in the rectory. The Holy Name Society is sponsoring a Bus Trip to the Showboat Casino in Atlantic City on Wednesday, October 6, We will serve bagels and cream cheese or butter please bring your own drink. The cost of the trip is $29.00 per person and you will get back $30.00 in slot play. The bus leaves from in front of St. Theresa s Church at 8:30AM Sharp. 3 TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ST. THERESA 19 TH ANNUAL DINNER DANCE Our parish will once again be holding its 19 th Annual Dinner Dance, on Friday, October 8, 2010 at the Villa Barone Manor. Our dinner dance is an opportunity to come together as a parish to celebrate the wonderful achievements we have accomplished over the past years. As a way to highlight the tremendous contribution of so many of our parishioners to this community we have selected the following parishioners to be this year s honorees: Patricia Aurrichio, Salvatore Cappola, Ann Leicht, Prudy Lenhard, Richard Marrano, Rosalie Marrano, Joseph Pozzuoli Esq. & Irene Purcell. If you would like to congratulate any one of our honorees or all of them please stop by the Rectory for Journal Ad Forms. Tickets are also on sale in the Rectory weekdays from 9AM-4:30PM. Tickets are $70 per person and $50 for children under 16. Please come and join us for a night of good food and good friends. This school year, the St. Theresa HSA will be working with the school and community to raise funds for new draperies for the school auditorium/gymnasium. Our goal is $12,000 which will include curtains for the stage, shades for the windows, and installation. This space serves as a meeting place for so many functions and different Parish groups in our community. OUR FOOD PANTRY NEEDS YOUR HELP We may have to temporarily cancel our Food Pantry distribution do to a lack of food. We are in desperate need of Food to replenish our pantry. Here is a list of items we need. Canned goods such as tomato sauce, tuna fish, vegetables, coffee, other items such as rice crackers, cereal, pasta, box juices or cans, soups and any other non-perishable items. THERESA BABY SHOWER We will once again be having our Annual Baby Shower for newborn babies starting the first week of October. Please bring New unwrapped items of baby clothes, diapers, ect. If you cannot go shopping a donation will be welcomed. Please leave your gift at the altar of the Blessed Mother. FEAST DAY OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI Monday, October 4, 2010 in Honor of St. Francis of Assisi there will be a Blessing of All Animals in front of the Church at 5:00PM. All are welcome to join us for this Traditional Blessing. THE HOLY NAME SOCIETY The Holy Name Society is collecting Rosaries and Holy Medals so they can be sent to our men and women in the Military Service. Please bring any rosaries or medals you may have to the Rectory.
