2 CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX MAY 10, 2015-SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER The month of May is the month of Mary. There should no surprise in that. May means the springtime and Our Blessed Mother Mary is the springtime of God s grace. She represents all of the brightness of spring, the budding of new life, the blossoming of springtime hope. We honor Mary in a special way during this month and on this day, Mother s Day. For the world needs a mother. The world needs a mother s help to move beyond the coldness of winter into the springtime of God s goodness. And the Mother who does that, the Mother who brings out the best in us, the Mother who leads us to her Divine Son is Our Blessed Mother, Jesus mother, but our Mother too. Our gospel today gives us the beautiful words of Jesus. He reminds us to remain in His love. But sometimes we get too caught up in ourselves, our problems, our troubles. We need someone to put us back on the right track, to show us the way. And that someone is the same one who has helped the Church since its earliest days, the same one who has helped Christians of every time and place to stay close to Jesus. And that someone, of course, is Our Mother Mary. This week on May 13, we celebrate the feast of Our Lady s appearance at Fatima. In 1917 Our Blessed Mother appeared to three peasant children in the little Portuguese village of Fatima. The three children, Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco, were not exceptional as far as this world is concerned. And perhaps for that reason Our Lady chose to appear to them, asking them to pray for sinners, to pray for conversion, and particularly to pray the rosary for peace. Countless miracles have happened at Fatima, but perhaps no miracle was as powerful as one that happened on the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima in It did not happen at Fatima itself it happened in Rome in St. Peter s Square. Many of you will remember that day thirty-four years ago when our Holy Father the great Pope John Paul II was greeting pilgrims in St. Peter s Square and was shot by a would-be assassin. The Pope was severely wounded. But even as he struggled to live, he uttered the two Latin words that he had chosen as his motto, Totus tuus, Totally yours, words addressed to Our Mother Mary. From his earliest years, particularly after the death of his own mother, Pope John Paul had put his life in Mary s hands; now on that tragic day when someone tried to take his life, he put his life in Mary s hands again. And Our Lady proved a true mother. The bullet did not damage any serious organs, just missing them so closely. Later on the Pope would say that one hand had shot the bullet, but another hand had guided its direction. An assassin had shot the bullet, but Mary s hand kept that bullet from ending the Pope s life. A year later on May 13, 1982 Pope John Paul visited Fatima to give thanks to Our Lady for his miraculous recovery and he placed the bullet used in that assassination attempt in the crown of Our Lady s statue at Fatima to remind the world of Mary s love and care. Few of us will have the same dramatic experience of Mary s help that Pope John Paul had. But we will have her motherly care nonetheless. She will help us to get through our winters and move on to our springs. She will help us to remain in the love of Jesus, even when the world tries to distract us. In our seminary, there is a statue in the very middle of the seminary buildings. The whole seminary surrounds it. It is a statue of Our Blessed Lady with her arms outstretched, embracing us in her love. And the inscription on the statue says simply, Monstra te esse mater, Show yourself to be our Mother. And she will. She will show herself to be Our Mother not only in May, not only on Mother s Day, but always. Let us turn to Our Mother today. Let us pray for all mothers, those who are here on earth and those who are praying for us from their place in heaven. Let us put our mothers in the hands of Our Blessed Mother, the Mother of us all. When we think of Mary, I always think of that beautiful poem in her honor. Let us offer it as our pray for mothers, our prayer to Our Mother on this day: Lovely Lady, dressed in blue, teach me how to pray. God was just your little boy. Tell me what to say. Did you lift Him up sometimes, gently on your knee? Did you sing to Him the way my mother sings to me? Did you hold his hand at night? Did you ever try telling him stories of the world? O, and did He cry? Do you think He really cares if I tell Him things, little things that happen. And do the angels wings make a noise? Does He understand me now? Tell me. For you know. Lovely Lady, dressed in blue, teach me how to pray, God was just your little boy and you know the way. Father Thomas B. Derivan DEVOTION TO OUR BLESSED MOTHER During the month of May, the month of Our Lady, we will present here information on various devotions that are popular among Catholic people. Our Lady is honored in every country and in every culture. May our devotion to Mary, Mother of Jesus, Mother of the Church, continue to grow and may she help us to come ever closer to Jesus her Son. ST. THERESA ALTAR SOCIETY On May 13, 2015 the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima the Altar Society will be praying the Rosary outside of the Church by the statue of St. Theresa at 7:00pm. If inclement weather the Rosary will be prayed inside the Church. All are invited. CONFESSIONS are heard every Saturday from 4:00PM-5:00PM or by appointment in the Rectory.

3 SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD MAY 14, 2015 The feast of the Ascension completes the Feast of faster by establishing the God-man at the right hand of the Father in heaven, to reign as the conqueror of the death of mankind, and the head of the Church that is to enfold mankind within its embrace. God mounts His throne amid shouts of joy, cry the Alleluias of Ascension Day; He has led captivity captive. Christ goes up to heaven, but His followers on earth and we among them are to carry out His mandate that we lead to Him our brothers all over the earth. As He was about to ascend into heaven He declared: You will receive power when the Holy Spirit, comes upon you, and you are to be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria and even to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). Thus He repeated to the Apostles the command He had previously given them, recorded by St. Mark in the Gospel of the Mass of the Ascension: Go into the whole world, and proclaim the good news to the whole of creation. The Apostles obeyed, as St. Mark tells us: They went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them. Christ said, As the Father has sent me, I also send you. And in virtue of the Mystical Body, in His Missioners Christ Himself went out. Christus predicat Christum, declares St. Augustine: Christ preaches Christ.through His church Christ came to the nations and through His Church Christ speaks to the nations. On this Ascension Day, let us not fail to reflect for a moment on the grandeur of the Church, the establishment of which Christ, in His last words before rising into heaven, commanded for every part of the earth. In the thought of St. Augustine, every new local church in China or Japan or Central Africa is a new generation of the historic mother churches today are descended. The churches are the daughters of the Apostles, declared St. Augustine. They are the daughters of kings, for He is the King of kings. The Apostles preached the word of truth and begot churches not of themselves but of and for Him. Similarly, all Christians who participate today in the apostolate of the Church are descendants of those Twelve who stood with Our Lady and watched Christ ascend into heaven. Who are the feet of the Lord? asks St. Augustine. The Apostles sent through the whole world. Who are the feet of the Lord? All preachers of the Gospel, through whom the Lord journeys through all the nations. Every Wednesday there is an open AA meeting 8:00PM at the Pelham Grand, 1870 Pelham Parkway South, Bronx, NY All Are Welcome! HOMEBOUND If any member of your family or if any of your neighbors are Homebound and would like to receive Holy Communion at home, please call the Rectory so that a Priest or Eucharistic Minister might visit them. A PRAYER FOR MOTHERS All-loving God, we give you thanks and praise for mothers young and old. We pray for young mothers, who give life and count toes and tend to our every need; may they be blessed with patience and tenderness to care for their families and themselves with great joy. We pray for our own mothers who have nurtured and cared for us may they continue to guide in strong and gentle ways. We remember mothers who are separated from their children because of war, poverty, or conflict may they feel the loving Embrace of our God who wipes every tear away. We pray for women who are not mothers but still love and shape us with motherly care and compassion. We remember mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers who are no longer with us but who live forever in our memory and nourish us with their love. Amen ST. MATTHIAS-MAY 14 According to Acts 1:15-26, during the days after the Ascension, Peter stood up in the midst of the brothers (about 120 of Jesus followers). Now that Judas had betrayed his ministry, it was necessary, Peter said, to fulfill the scriptural recommendation: May another take his office. Therefore, it is necessary that one of the men who accompanied us the whole time the Lord Jesus came and went among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day on which he was taken up from us, become with us a witness to his resurrection (Acts 1:21-22). They nominated two men: Joseph Barsabbas and Matthias. They prayed and drew lots. The choice fell upon Matthias, who was added to the Eleven. Matthias is not mentioned by name anywhere else in the New Testament. What was the holiness of Matthias? Obviously he was suited for apostleship by the experience of being with Jesus from his baptism to his ascension. He must also have been suited personally, or he would not have been nominated for so great a responsibility. Must we not remind ourselves that the fundamental holiness of Matthias was his receiving gladly the relationship with the Father offered him by Jesus and completed by the Holy Spirit? If the apostles are the foundations of our faith by their witness, they must also be reminders, if only implicitly, that holiness is entirely a matter of God s giving, and it is offered to all, in the everyday circumstances of life. We receive, and even for this God supplies the power of freedom. Jesus speaks of the apostles function of being judges, that is, rulers. He said, Amen, I say to you that you who have followed me, in the new age, when the Son of man is seated on his throne of glory, will yourselves sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel ( Matthew 19:28). PETITION BOOK-Have you noticed our Petition Book in the vestibule of the Church? Every Saturday before the 5:00PM Mass, the petitions entered into the book for that week are brought up to the altar of the Blessed Mother, where they remain for all the weekend Masses. Please pray for these intentions.

4 MAY 10, 2015 ST. DAMIEN OF MOLOKAI ( ) MAY 10 When Joseph de Veuster was born in Tremelo, Belgium, in 1840, Few people in Europe had any firsthand knowledge of leprosy (Hansen s disease). By the time he died at the age of 49, people all over the world knew about this disease because of him. They knew that human compassion could soften the ravages of this disease. Forced to quit school at age 13 to work on the family farm, six years later Joseph entered the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, taking the name of a fourthcentury physician and martyr. When his brother Pamphile, a priest in the same congregation, fell ill and was unable to go to the Hawaiian Islands as assigned, Damien quickly volunteered in his place. In May 1864, two months after arriving in his new mission, Damien was ordained a priest in Honolulu and assigned to the island of Hawaii. In 1873, he went to the Hawaiian government s leper colony on the island of Molokai, set up seven years earlier. Part of a team of four chaplains taking that assignment for three months each year, Damien soon volunteered to remain permanently, caring for the people s physical, medical and spiritual needs. In time, he became their most effective advocate to obtain promised government support. Soon the settlement had new houses and a new church, school and orphanage. Morale improved considerably. A few years later he succeeded in getting the Franciscan Sisters of Syracuse, led by Mother Marianne Cope (January 23), to help staff this colony in Kalaupapa. Damien contracted Hansen s disease and died of its complications. As requested, he was buried in Kalaupapa, but in 1936 the Belgian government succeeded in having his body moved to Belgium. Part of Damien s body was returned to his beloved Hawaiian brothers and sisters after his beatification in When Hawaii became a state in 1959, it selected Damien as one of its two representatives in the Statuary Hall at the U.S. Capitol. On October 11, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI canonized Father Damien, who is now known as St. Damien of Molokai. HOMEBOUND If any member of your family or if any of your neighbors are Homebound and would like to receive Holy Communion at home, please call the Rectory so that a Priest or Eucharistic Minister might visit them. ST. ISIDORE THE FARMER MAY 15 This saint was born in 1070 in Madrid, Spain. His parents were deeply religious. They named their son after the great St. Isidore, archbishop of Seville, Spain. We celebrate his feast on April 4. Isidore s parents wanted to offer their son a first -rate education, but they could not afford it. They were tenant farmers. Their son would spend his life in the same occupation. Isidore went to work for a rich landowner in Madrid. The man s name was John de Vargas. Isidore worked all his life for Mr. de Vargas. He married a good girl from a family as poor as his own. The couple loved each other very much. They had one child, a boy, who died as a baby. Isidore and his wife offered to Jesus their sadness over the child s death. They trusted their son was happy with God forever. St. Isidore began each day at Mass. Then he would go to his job. He tried to work hard even if he didn t feel like it. He plowed and planted and prayed. He called on Mary, the saints and his guardian angel. They helped him turn ordinary days into special, joyful times. The world of faith became very real to St. Isidore, as real as Mr. de Vargas fields. When he had a day off, Isidore made it a point to spend extra time adoring Jesus in church. Sometimes, on holidays, Isidore and his wife would visit a few neighboring parishes on a one-day pilgrimage of prayer. Once the parish had a dinner. Isidore arrived early and went into the church to pray. He arrived in the parish hall late. He didn t come in alone. He brought a group of beggars, too. The parishioners were upset. What if there wasn t enough food for all those beggars? But the more they filled up their plates, the more there was for everybody else. St. Isidore was totally unselfish. He was a loving and compassionate human being. He is one of Spain s most popular saints. Isidore died on May 15, In March, 1622, Pope Gregory XV proclaimed five great saints together. They were St. Ignatius Loyola, St. Francis Xavier, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Philip Neri and St. Isidore the Farmer. St. Isidore let his faith in Jesus and the Church light up his whole life. We can ask him to help us love the Lord as he did. WANTED-FEAST VOLUNTEERS AND SPONSORS: Preparations for our 19th annual Feast to be held July 22-26, are well underway. We are blessed to have wonderful volunteers who help in many different ways at the Feast. But we are always in need of more volunteers. Please consider becoming a Feast volunteer either for all or for part of the Feast. If you can help, please call the Rectory at and leave your name and other information there. We appreciate your help and we hope that you can help us make this year s Feast better than ever. We are also blessed to have businesses as sponsors for the Feast. Please pass this information on to local merchants and stores which you visit. Likewise they can call the Rectory for sponsorship information. This year all sponsors will have a special I Am A Sponsor of St. Theresa s Feast sign to display in their windows, to show our thanks to them. You may want to bring this bulletin to stores you visit so that they can have the information.

5 OUR LADY OF FATIMA Between May and October 1917, Our Lady appeared six times to three young Portuguese children in a field called the Cova de Iria, near the small village of Fatima, about 70 miles north of Lisbon. The children who received the apparitions had been brought up in an atmosphere of piety. They were Lucia dos Santos, age10, and her two younger cousins Francisco and Jacinta. They tended sheep together and often would kneel in the open to pray the rosary. The first apparition took place around noon on Sunday, May 13, 1917 when a brilliant flash of lightning drew the attention of the children. A beautiful Lady appeared clothed in white and asked the children to return the 13th of each month. In these apparitions, Mary asked the children to pray the Rosary daily for the conversion of sinners and asked for devotion to her Immaculate Heart. She asked for prayer, penance and that Russia be consecrated to her Immaculate Heart. She also spoke of observing the first Saturdays of each month by going to confession and receiving Holy Communion to make reparation to the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. On the day of the final apparition, October 13, 1917, she identified herself as Our Lady of the Rosary and the dramatic episode of the dance of the sun took place, witnessed by a crowd of 70,000 people, in which the sun seemed to tumble from the sky. After a lengthy diocesan inquiry, a declaration of the Bishop of Leiria, in whose diocese these apparitions occurred, approved the devotion to Our Lady of Fatima in the young visionary Francisco had died on April 4, 1919 and his sister Jacinta on February 20, the sole survivor, Sister Lucia, lived many years as a professed Carmelite nun, before her death on February 13, The first structure to be built on the location of the apparitions was a small archway which was soon replaced by a tiny chapel over the spot of the apparitions. When this first chapel was destroyed by dynamite in 1922, a second chapel was built and near to it the Pavilion of the Sick. The foundation stone for the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary was laid on October 13, 1928 and the finished structure was solemnly consecrated by Cardinal Cerejeira, the Patriarch of Lisbon, on October 6, In the colonnade of the Basilica, there are fifteen altars, in honor of the Mysteries of the Rosary. On October 31, 1942 in honor of the 25th Anniversary of the apparitions, the Supreme Pontiff, Pope Pius XII ( ) solemnly consecrated the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. His Papal Legate, Cardinal Masella, crowned the statue of Our Lady of Fatima on May 13, 1946, the 300th Anniversary of the consecration of the nation of Portugal to Mary Immaculate. On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the apparitions, on May 13, 1967 His Holiness Pope Paul VI ( ) went to Fatima on a pilgrimage of prayer and peace. On that occasion, he published an Apostolic Exhortation, Signum Magnum, in which he invited all members of the Church to consecrate themselves to Mary Immaculate and to put this pious act into concrete action in their daily lives. the Vicar of Christ, Pope John Paul II offered Mass in Fatima on May 13, 1982 to give thanks for Mary s intercession in saving his life a year earlier. He reminded the faithful that the message of Fatima is a call to conversion and repentance, the nucleus of the message of the Gospel. He re-consecrated the world to Mary s Immaculate Heart and called all to prayer, especially the Rosary. Rev. Matthew R. Mauriello ST.
