2 CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX JULY 22, 2012 SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Every person is a unique individual. There is no one else in the world exactly like you or exactly like me. Most of us take pride in this. We are originals. None of us waits to be an imitation of some other person. And this is a healthy attitude. It would be a sad thing to go through life pretending to be someone else. And yet, there is a sense in which imitating other people is an essential part of living. We all do it. The language that we speak is a case in point. Every one of us learned to talk by imitating the sounds that we heard others make. And to a large extent, we learned to walk, to eat, to play and to work by that same method. Unique individuals though we are, our lives in large measure are imitations of what we have seen and heard in the lives of other people. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Well that all depends on whom we choose to imitate. Some degree of imitation is inevitable for everyone of us. Therefore, we should exercise wisdom and caution when choosing our role models. St. Paul in his letter to the Ephesians calls us to the highest level of imitation. He wrote, Be imitators of God as His dear children. His attitude was that since we are going to imitate someone, why not the highest and best? Why not God, Himself? Obviously, there are some things about Him that we cannot imitate. But St. Paul mentions characteristics of God that we, as His children, can copy in our own living. The first is kindness. Each of us must deal with the daily routine of life. We must do our work, pay our bills, and hopefully have a little fun in the midst of it all. While doing this, our most consistent challenge will be living with and relating to other people. It is here that we are called to practice simple kindness. Sometimes we should stop and think about epitaphs those brief statements etched on gravestones in memory of the deceased. How would you like to be remembered? Let us live our lives now in such a way that when we are gone, it can be rightly said of us: He was a kind man, She was a kind woman. If we do that, we will be imitators of God as His dear children. Another divine characteristic that we are called to imitate is a willingness to forgive. In the Church, we carry a profound message of hope for a sinful world. It is that God is the great forgiver. But every day of our lives, we either confirm or deny that message by the way we deal with one another. If we fail to forgive, we are contradicting the very message of Jesus. When we are mutually forgiving, we are simply imitating what God has already done for us in Jesus. Can you and I truly become kind and forgiving, just as God is? In our own strength, the answer is: No we cannot. If we are to imitate God, we must have help from outside ourselves. Here Jesus presents Himself as the living bread come down from Heaven. Jesus offers Himself as our spiritual food. So we should become like Jesus. And when the life of Jesus is incorporated into our lives, then it becomes possible for us to be imitators of God, as His dear children. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION Our Religious Education Program Registration & Re-Registration is still underway. Please stop by the Church Rectory for an application. For information regarding the program call Mrs. McCarrick at A copy of your child s baptismal certificate and other sacrament certificates (if your child is in Gr.3 and up) are needed at the time of registration along with the annual fee of $90 (1 child), $130 (2 children), $170 (3 children) or $185 (4 children). CATHOLICISM FILM SERIES We will NOT meet on July 24 th since it is the week of the Feast. Join us on Tuesday night July 31 st at 7:30PM in the Rectory meeting room for the 7 th part (out of 10) of the screening of Fr. Robert Barron s Catholicism movie series. In this amazing series, Fr. Barron presents the Catholic faith in a most engaging and challenging way. The 7 th episode is entitled: WORD MADE FLESH, TRUE BREAD OF HEAVEN: THE MYSTERY OF THE LITURGY AND THE EUCHARIST. Coffee and dessert will be served. There are Spanish subtitles. 3 SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 2012 ST. THERESA FEAST Our 16 th Annual Summer Festival is only days away. So tell your family and friends to save the date and make plans to attend this fun filled celebration. VOLUNTEERS We would like to thank those parishioners that have signed up to help us during our Feast. Volunteers are reminded that we will be distributing t-shirts on Monday night July 23 rd between 7:30 and 8:30PM in the school auditorium. PROCESSION ROUTE Our procession with the Statue of St. Theresa will be held on the Sunday (July 29 th ) of the Feast beginning at 5:00PM. We will actually be beginning the services at 4:00PM in the Church with a Holy Hour for Evangelization. Please make every effort to share in this wonderful afternoon of faith. RAFFLE Each family should have received two raffle tickets in the mail. The Grand Prize will be a 2012 Mercedes Benz C300 or $30,000. The 2 nd prize will be $1,000 and the 3 rd prize will be $500. There will only be 1,000 tickets sold at a cost of $100 each. Once again we ask for your help. If you cannot buy them yourself please make every effort to network them among friends, relatives or coworkers. Parishioners will be in the back of Church today to accept your raffle tickets, answer any questions, or give you any additional tickets that you may need. LOCAL RESIDENTS We ask all of our parishioners to join us and say thank-you to those individuals that own homes or live within the immediate area of our Feast. We realize that at times during the week of our Feast those local residents are inconvenienced. We thank them for their understanding and patience. Many of them have told us that these inconveniences are greatly outweighed by the good that our Feast does for our parish and community. If there is a condition that you feel we can address please call the Rectory at and a member of the Feast Committee will contact you. AHRC AFTERNOON This year we will once again be entertaining individuals of our local A.H.R.C.. It will take place on Friday, July 27 th beginning at 1:00PM. these adults with developmental disabilities are given an opportunity to partake in the magic of John Turdo, a variety of games and plenty of good food. If you want to witness a very special event, stop by this year. ADVANCE RIDES Advance ride tickets at a discount are available weekdays in the rectory or weekends at the Church Gift Shop. During the feast each ride will require one ride ticket. From now until July 22 you can buy 10 ride tickets for $20.00 and save $15.00 over the individual ticket price at the feast. So why wait on long lines and pay more. Save time and money by purchasing your ride tickets now.
