THERESA, BRONX NOVEMBER 6, 2011 THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME I dare say some of us know, or have known, what it is to wear used clothes, to buy used books, and to drive used cars. And the truth of the matter is that it s really not a bad way to live. If it s handled right there s a touch of class to it. Perhaps you have noticed that people, who grow up in large families, wearing hand-me-down clothes, almost always end up bragging about it. Secondhand living isn t all bad, in fact, it can be quite good. But there are some things in life that ought not to be secondhand; they ought to be strictly, personally our own. One of those things is our faith in God. None of us has ever seen Jesus with our own eyes, heard Him with our own ears, or touched Him with our own hands. Everything we know about Him, in a biographical sense, was shared with us by eyewitnesses, all of whom died centuries before we were ever born. Except for the testimony in writing of men like Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, we would have no knowledge of the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. In this sense, we all must content ourselves with a secondhand faith. Our belief in Jesus is initially based upon the word, the story and witness of someone else; but to concede that in no way casts doubt on the validity of our Christian faith. Secondhand knowledge is not necessarily second-rate knowledge. The plain truth is we have very little firsthand knowledge about anything. Virtually everything we know, with any degree of certainty, involves the word and witness of other people. This is true in the realm lf geography, astronomy, mathematics, or almost any field of knowledge you might mention. So we Catholics offer no apology for the fact that our belief in Jesus begins with and is based upon the testimony of other people. All Christian faith necessarily starts out secondhand. It comes to us through the testimony of scripture, through the testimony of the church, through the testimony of other believers. But for it to ever mean anything, it must be changed from hearsay to experience. It must cease to be secondhand and become personally our own. It is one thing to believe in great books. It is another thing to read them, to get acquainted with them, to know them for yourself. It is one thing to believe in great music. It is another thing to listen to it. No great thing is ever fully realized except through personal experience. And so it is with Jesus. You have known about Him all of your life. You have read stories about Him. You have heard sermons about Him. You have listened to testimonies about Him. But has He ever become a living reality in your own life? That is the kind of experience we need. You must allow your secondhand faith to become firsthand, to truly open your own heart and life to Jesus. You can meet Him in the Eucharist. You can talk with Him in prayer. You can walk with Him in avenues of service. You can experience Him in forgiveness. You can take His principles with you and practice them in your daily life. Jesus can and must become a living reality in you. How wonderful it would be if the day should come, when you could say: No longer does my faith depend on someone else s story. I have heard for myself, and I know that this really is the Savior of the world. That is a firsthand faith; and over the long haul it s the only kind that s really worth having. CONFIRMATION On Wednesday November 9, 2011 there will be a Confirmation Retreat Night at 7:00PM to 9:00PM in the school auditorium. All candidates and parents are required to attend. Our guest speaker will be Tony Bellizzi. HOLY NAME SOCIETY The Holy Name Society will be meeting on Thursday, November 10 at 8:00PM in the large Rectory meeting room. CONFESSIONS are heard every Saturday from 4:00PM to 5:00PM or by appointment in the rectory. ALTAR SOCIETY There will be a meeting of the Altar Society on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 7:30PM in the large Rectory meeting room. We would like to thank all who brought in gifts and gave donations to our Baby Shower. All of the items and donations will help the moms and their newborns who are struggling to make ends meet. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Takes place every Wednesday afternoon from 4:30 to 5:30PM in the Church. Please come and taste how good the Lord is! Please visit Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.

3 THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YOUTH GROUP St. Theresa s Youth Group invites everyone to join them for coffee, juice & cake Every Sunday after the 10:30 Family Mass in the large Rectory meeting room. A CALL FOR VOICES! St. Theresa s Adult Choir invites new members to please join our wonderful and dedicated choir. At this moment we are looking for extra choir members for two important dates: Festival of Lessons and Carols Wednesday December 21, 2011 at 7:00PM Christmas Midnight Mass Friday December 24, 2011 at 11:15PM The final rehearsals for these services will be on Wednesdays in December (you are most welcome to start coming as soon as October 26) in the lower rectory meeting room at 7:30PM to 9:00PM. BIBLE STUDY GROUP Join us every Monday night at 7:15 PM in our new location the School Library as we seek to grow closer to Christ by meditating on Holy Scripture. Over the next few months, this new Scripture group will focus on theme of evangelization. Please come and be nourished by the Word of God. Everyone is invited to attend. OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION Our Lady of the Assumption in Pelham Bay will be hosting An Afternoon of Peace and Hope with Dan Schutte, on November 13, 2011 at 2:30PM in the Church. Dan is the renowned composer of many pieces of music that we have come to love: Here I am Lord, City of Gold, Sing a New Song and many more. They gave up their loves in the defense of freedom for their loved ones and their country. Teach me to appreciate the virtue of patriotism a true and Christian love of country. Let me love my country not to follow it blindly but to make it the land of goodness that it should be. Let patriotism be such that it will not exclude the other nations of the world but include them in a powerful love of country that has room for all others too.
