2 CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN Our Church Year is filled with beautiful feasts. Just a few weeks ago we celebrated the great joy of Easter as we joined in praise of our Risen Lord. Two weeks ago we celebrated the great Feast of Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, the beginning of the Church. We all have our favorite feastschristmas, Easter, the feast of a favorite saint, the many feasts of Our Blessed Mother. But certainly one feast that touches the hearts of all of us, one feast that draws out from our hearts the best of faith and the best of love is today s feast, called in Latin, Corpus Christi, the Feast of the Body of Christ. People throughout the whole world today will do what we do they will join in prayers and processions; they will hear homilies about the Blessed Sacrament; they will give thanks to God for His greatest mysterythe mystery of bread being changed into His Body, the miracle of the Last Supper happening again and again at our altar, the miracle of Jesus continually feeding us His people with His greatest gift, the gift of His very self, His Body and Blood, in this Holy Eucharist that we receive. How can we ever understand this gift, the Holy Eucharist? The answer is: We cannot. We can only try to appreciate Jesus gift of His very self to us. Almost eight hundred years ago, the great St. Thomas Aquinas wrote about the mystery of the Holy Eucharist. He wrote His explanations of the doctrine, of the substance of bread being changed into the substance of the Body of Christ, all through the powerful love of God. But St. Thomas felt he had to do more than just try to explain the doctrine. He had to try to express his love for the Blessed Sacrament. And so this great teacher, this Doctor of the Church, wrote one of the most beautiful poems in honor of the Blessed Sacrament. It is called in Latin Adoro Te Devote. Humbly we adore you, Christ redeemer King, You are Lord of heaven you to whom we sing. God the mighty, you have come, bearing gifts of grace; Son of Adam still you are, Savior to our race. St Thomas expressed what we all feel, our inability to understand this mystery. Like St. Thomas the Apostle, we doubt at times, but we want to believe. We turn to our faith: Faith alone reveals here Bread of Paradise, Faith alone may witness Jesus sacrifice. Therefore, Lord, as once of old Thomas gained his sight, Now increase our feeble faith; shed your healing light. St. Thomas knew the power of the Holy Eucharist, this sacrament which binds us together, the sacrament in which Jesus literally dwells within us: Now with glad thanksgiving, praise Christ glorified, He in us is present; we in Him abide. Members of His Body, we in Him are one. Hail this sacred union, heaven on earth begun. Is there any better way to express it? When the Lord Jesus comes to this altar in a few moments, when the priest says the same words which Jesus said at the Last Supper, when bread becomes Christ s Body, and when we mere mortal beings come to receive the very Body of Christ, then indeed, as St. Thomas says, heaven on earth has begun Jesus is truly in us and we in Him. Dear friends, you can feel the love of the Holy Eucharist in St. Thomas beautiful words. Today, on this feastday, the Church invites us to renew that same love, to celebrate that love, to make the love of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament the very center of our lives. Where would we be without the Holy Eucharist? We would be nowhere, we would be nothing. But with the Eucharist, we have strength, for we have Jesus and He is enough for all of us. Let us determine today that we will love the Blessed Sacrament more and more, that we will never take this Sacrament for granted, that we will receive Jesus always with the wideeyed faith and love of a child receiving Jesus for the first time. May our love for the Blessed Sacrament always grow. May we let that Eucharistic faith shine through us. May we say, in the words of the final verse of St. Thomas; hymn: Christ, our God and brother, hear our humble plea, By this holy banquet, keep us joined to Thee, Make us one in loving Thee, one in mind and heart, Till in heaven, we are Thine, nevermore to part. Father Thomas B. Derivan THURSDAY 12 NOON MASS Thursday 12 Noon Mass continues throughout the summer months, but, effective this Thursday, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will be discontinued until the Thursday after Labor Day. The Novena to the Sacred Heart will be recited after the 12 Noon Mass. PETITION BOOK Have you noticed our Petition Book in the vestibule of the Church? Every Saturday before the 5:00PM Mass, the petitions entered into the book for that week are brought up to the altar of the Blessed Mother, where they remain for all the weekend Masses. Please pray for these intentions. THE EXCELSIOR SCHOLARSHIP: As you may know, Governor Cuomo and the State Legislature have enacted a tuitionfree program, called the Excelsior Scholarship, for college students who are residents of New York State who are enrolled at a SUNY or CUNY school for the fall of The program is now in effect and is available for students whose families earn up to $100,000 each year. You may visit for more information and for an application. CONFESSIONS are heard every Saturday from 4:00PM to 5:00PM or by appointment in the Rectory.

3 THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN II: As we observe today the Feast of Corpus Christi, the Body of Christ, it is good for us to review our understanding of this Blessed Sacrament and the proper way to receive Him. Some points to reflect on: Let us always remember who we are receiving in Holy Communion. We are receiving the living Jesus under the form of bread. We are not just receiving breadquite the opposite. In the Mass, the bread is changed at the Consecration. When the priest repeats the words of Jesus, This is my Body, the bread is no longer bread. It is Jesus Sacred Body which He gives to us. The whole Mass should prepare us to receive Jesus in Holy Communion. Our attention should be on the great mystery that is happening at the altar. I like to tell the children that when the altar server rings the bell, it is like to doorbell or the telephone ringing, as Jesus says to us, Here I am! When we walk forward to receive Holy Communion, we should not let anything or anyone else distract us. We should be praying quietly, telling Jesus we welcome Him to our souls. After Communion, we should spend quiet time, either kneeling or sitting at our bench, thanking Jesus for this beautiful Sacrament. In receiving Holy Communion, as you well know, there are two proper methods. You may receive on you tongue. Or you may receive in your hand. If you are receiving in your hand, your hands should be made into a cross, one hand beneath the other. When the priest or Eucharistic Minister places the Sacred Host in your top hand, use your bottom hand to pick it up and place in you mouth. Do this immediately in front of the priestdo not turn, lest the Sacred Host fall. It is not appropriate to take the Sacred Host from the priest (let him place it in your hand). There should be nothing else in one s hands in receiving the Sacred Host. The U.S. Bishops have determined that before receiving Holy Communion, we should make a simple bow. The normal way of receiving Holy Communion is by standing. If you wish to kneel, you must be careful not to trio others behind youbetter to wait until the end of the Communion line. We observe the Eucharistic fastone hour Refraining from food or drink (except water or medicine) before the actual time of Holy Communion. For example, if you come to the 9:00AM Mass, Communion usually is given around 9:30AM. Therefore you should not eat or drink from 8:30AM on. Please note: those with medical conditions are excused from the Eucharistic fast. A few other quick reminders: Try to use the bathroom before Mass. Please do not read the bulletin during Mass. Use the missalette and the song sheet and answer the prayers with strong voice. Make every effort to be early for Mass so that you can prepare for this great Mystery. Parents, please remember that Our Lord said, Let the little children come to me. BRING YOUR CHILDREN, INCLUDING BABIES, TO MASS. If the child becomes restless, you can take the child for a few moments to the vestibule and then return. In extreme cases, you may use the Cry Room, but that should be only in exceptional cases. Our Lord wants His children at Mass. If a child cries, we should remember Pope Francis remark that a child s cry is the voice of God. As I tell parents, I do not worry about the baby cryingi do worry about the cellphone ringing! I hope these reminders are helpful to us all in receiving Jesus greatest giftthe gift of His very Self in Holy Communion. Father Thomas B. Derivan PADRE PIO S PRAYER AFTER HOLY COMMUNION Stay with me, Lord, for it is necessary to have You present so that I do not forget You. You know how easily I abandon You. Stay with me, Lord, because I am weak and I need Your strength, that I may not fall so often. Stay with me, Lord, for You are my life and without You I am without fervor. Stay with me, Lord, for You are my light and without You I am darkness. Stay with me, Lord, so that I may hear Your voice and follow You. Stay with me, Lord, for I desire to love You very much and always be in Your company. Stay with me, Lord, if You wish me to be faithful to You. Stay with me, Lord, as poor as my soul is I want it to be a place of consolation for You, a nest of Love. PRAYER FOR FATHER Dear Lord, help all fathers in the task set before them. As you helped Adam see his wife as his partner, help all fathers to treasure their wives as partners in life. As you helped Saint Joseph in the virtue of obedience, help all fathers to obey your will. As you helped Jesse raise his son David to holiness, help all fathers to grow in personal righteousness. As you helped Abraham, Isaac and Jacob grow their families into tribes and nations, help all fathers to treasure their children as they are treasured by their Heavenly Father. Though all sin and fall short, help every father to rise and be the man of God he is called to be. Amen

4 JUNE 18, 2017 DEVOTION TO THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS June is the month of the Sacred Heart, that Heart wounded by our sins, but always open to us in mercy and love. Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we could say, actually began on Good Friday when Our Lord s heart was pierced by the soldier s lance, open in love for all the world. Special devotion to the Sacred Heart, including the observance of the nine First Fridays, came from the revelations of Our Lord to St. Margaret Mary Alocoque, a French nun who was blessed in 1674 with apparitions of Our Lord who directed her to encourage devotion to His Sacred Heart. He said, Behold this Heart which has so loved mankind that it has spared nothing in order to testify my love. But in return I receive from the greater part of humanity only ingratitude, irreverence, coldness and contempt. I come to your heart so that through your fervor you may atone for the offenses I have received from lukewarm and slothful hearts that dishonor me in the Blesse Sacrament. The Twelve Promises of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to St. Margaret Mary encourage all Catholics to know and understand the benefit of practicing this devotion. The Twelve Promises that Our Lord gave to St. Margaret Mary are: I will give all who follow this devotion all the graces necessary in their state of life. I will give peace in their families and will unite families that are divided. I will console them in all their troubles. I will be their refuge during life and above all in death. I will bestow the blessings of Heaven on all their enterprises. Sinners shall find in my Heart the source and infinite ocean of mercy. Tepid souls shall become fervent Fervent souls shall rise quickly to great perfection I will bless those places wherein the image of My Heart shall be exposed and honored and will imprint my love on the hearts of those who would wear this image on their person. I will also destroy in them all disordered movements. 10. I will give to priests who are animated by a tender devotion to my Divine Heart the gift of touching the most hardened hearts. 11. Those who promoter this devotion shall have their names written in my Heart, never to be effaced. I promise you in the excessive mercy of my Heart that my allpowerful love will grant to all those who receive communion on the First Friday in nine consecutive months, the grace of final penitence: they will not die in my disgrace, nor without receiving their Sacraments. My Divine Heart shall be their safe refuge in this last moment. The Nine Fridays must be made in honor of His Sacred Heart, practicing the devotion and having a great love of His Sacred Heart. They must be on the first Friday of the month for nine consecutive months, and Communion must be received. The Feast of the Sacred Heart is celebrated this Friday, the Friday after the Feast of Corpus Christi. If you have not made devotion to the Sacred Heart part of your frequent prayers, how good it would be to start this week. We remind you also that the Novena to the Sacred Heart is rectied here in our church each Thursday after the 12 Noon Mass. We would like to give our thanks to Zeppieri Bakery for their generous donation of the bread for our St. Anthony Feast Day. The bread has been donated in memory of Carmine Zeppieri who was a faithful parishioner and a well known member of our community who died in March of this year. We would also like to thank Rockland Bakery in Nanuet, NY for their generous donation of St. Anthony Bread donated in loving Memory of Mary Bronzino, one of our beloved parishioner. May God bless all at Zeppieri s and Rockland Bakeries. PRAYER OF ADORATION By St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta O God, we believe you are here. We adore you and love you with our whole heart and soul because you are most worthy of all our love. We desire to love you as the blessed do in heaven. Flood our souls with your spirit and life. Penetrate and possess our whole being utterly, that our lives may only be a radiance of yours. Shine through us, and be so in us, that every soul we come in contact with may feel your presence in our soul. Let them look up and see no longer us, but only Jesus! HANDICAP ENTRANCE TO THE CHURCH The side entrance to the Church on Pilgrim Avenue will be open every Sunday for anyone who is handicapped or in a wheelchair. Also this same entrance will be opened every weekday until 9:30AM.

6 2ND TIME: Steven Cesareo & Norah Carney 1ST TIME: Pasquale Cioce & Adrianna Gentile 1ST TIME: Richard DiSanto & Jackie Housler THIS WEEK S ALTAR BREAD IS IN LOVING MEMORY OF CARMINE ZEPPIERI LOVE, ST. THERESA SCHOOL & PARISH JUNE 21 ST. ALOYSIUS GONZAGA RELIGIOUS ( ) The Lord can make saints anywhere, even amid the brutality and license of Renaissance life. Florence was the mother of piety for Aloysius Gonzaga despite his exposure to a society of fraud, dagger, poison and lust. As a son of a princely family, he grew up in royal courts and army camps. His father wanted Aloysius to be a military hero. At age seven he experienced a profound spiritual quickening. His prayers included the Office of Mary, the psalms and other devotions. At age nine he came from his hometown of Castiglione to Florence to be educated; by age eleven he was teaching catechism to poor children, fasting three days a week and practicing great austerities. When he was thirteen years old he traveled with his parents and the empress of Austria to Spain and acted as a page in the court of Philip II. The more Aloysius saw of court life, the more disillusioned he became, seeking relief in learning about the lives of saints. A book about the experience of Jesuit missionaries in India suggested to him the idea of entering the Society of Jesus, and in Spain his decision became final. Now began a fouryear contest with his father. Eminent churchmen and laypeople were pressed into service to persuade him to remain in his normal vocation. Finally he prevailed, was allowed to renounce his right to succession and was received into the Jesuit novitiate. Like other seminarians, Aloysius was faced with a new kind of penancethat of accepting different ideas about the exact nature of penance. He was obliged to eat more and to take recreation with the other students. He was forbidden to pray except at stated times. He spent four years in the study of philosophy and had Saint Robert Bellarmine (September 17) as his spiritual adviser. In 1591 a plague struck Rome. The Jesuits opened a hospital of their own. The general himself and many other Jesuits rendered personal service. Because he nursed patients, washing them and making their beds, Aloysius caught the disease himself. A fever persisted after his recovery and he was so weak he could scarcely rise from bed. Yet, he maintained his great discipline of prayer, knowing that he would die within the octave of Corpus Christi, three months later, at the age of twentythree. As a saint who fasted, scourged himself, sought solitude and prayer and did not look on the faces of women, Aloysius seems an unlikely patron of youth in a society where asceticism is confined to the training camps of athletes, and sexual permissiveness has little left to permit. Can an overweight and airconditioned society deprive itself of anything? It will when it discovers a reason, as Aloysius did. The motivation for letting God purify us is the experience of God loving us, in prayer.
