THERESA, BRONX FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN: SEPTEMBER 7, 2014 TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME This week we join with our fellow Americans in remembering the 13th anniversary of the World Trade Center Tragedy of September 11, thirteen years have come and gone, but I am sure that none of us will ever forget that day. It is imprinted on our minds and always will be. One of the men who was lost in the tragedy was Court Officer Captain William Harry Thompson. Harry was working several blocks away fro the Trade Center, but he rushed there to help. He always was there to help, especially his two sons, Michael and Rahsaan and the other youngsters who looked at him as a second father. Harry went into the building three times and brought out many people, 150 of them, before going in the final time, not coming out again. Harry was a giving person even to the last moments of his life. There are so many stories like Harry s. Every one of them, whether they were firefighters, police officers, EMT workers, ordinary citizens, husbands and wives, young and old, Christian, Jewish and Muslim, from every land-all of them should be very much in our prayers not only on this September 11th anniversary, but every day. The occasion of the anniversary of the World Trade Center tragedy should be a day of prayer for all of us. And why? Because your prayers are strong. Our Lord promises us that where two or three are gathered in His name, He will be with them. We have His word for that. The greatest weapon that we have against violence and terrorism is the one we have available to us at every moment, namely prayer itself. Do not underestimate the power of prayer to change hearts and to change the world. Pray for our country, that we will remember how precious freedom is and how precious America is. Pray for those brave people who keep our country safe, the countless police officers, firefighters, emergency personnel who put their lives on the line each day to keep us safe. Pray that those who turn to terrorism and violence will have a change of heart and will realize that the taking of life can never be justified, whether it is the life of innocent workers in the World Trade Center or the life of an innocent baby in his mother s womb. Pray not only today but every day that our children will never again have to witness what we all witnessed thirteen years ago. Your prayers are so important. Let us never forget that, especially on September 11th. Your prayerful remembrance is a powerful profession of faith, and affirmation of life, and a proclamation of hope: First, it is a profession of faith for we know that our loved ones lost on that day are in the loving hands of God. We hold on to them in loving memory, but we know that God holds them in His loving embrace. Second, your prayers are a proclamation of life. In fact, what we remember is not death, but life. We affirm that death and violence will not win out, and that life and goodness will. September 11th should be for us a day of appreciating life, all life, the blessed gift of life that we enjoy and the life of every person, young or old, born or unborn. And finally your prayers, at Mass, at home, or in other observances are a proclamation of hope. Six years ago the message of hope was proclaimed loudly and clearly at the site of the tragedy. I am sure you will remember the scene. Our now-retired Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI knelt in silent prayer at Ground Zero. It was a scene profoundly silent, but profoundly beautiful. The Pope himself asked to visit Ground Zero. And there he knelt in prayer alone. On all the other occasions during his visit here, he was thronged by thousands of people. But at Ground Zero he did what countless other people have done. He came to pray silently for those who were lost, to commend them to God s loving hands. But he also prayed for us. Remember the theme of his journey to our country was Christ Our Hope. And he brought the hope of Christ to that place where it seemed hope had been destroyed. Instead of looking at the place as a scene of death, the Pope made Ground Zero a shrine of hope. He prayed for all of us in these beautiful words: O God of love and compassion and healing, look on us, people of many different faiths and traditions, who gather at this scene of violence and pain. We ask you in our goodness to give eternal life and peace to all who died here, to all the innocent men and women who were victims of this tragedy simply because their work or service brought them here on September 11, We ask you to bring healing to those who have lost loved-ones. Give them strength to continue their lives with courage and hope. Finally, Lord, comfort and console us and strengthen us in hope. Give us the wisdom and courage to work tirelessly for a world where true peace and love reign among nations and in the hearts of all. May we make that prayer our own. May we say the same words as Pope Benedict, Lord, help us to work for peace. May love reign among all nations and in the hearts of all your people. Lord, strengthen us in hope Amen. Father Thomas B. 3 Religious Education Classes for Public School Children Ongoing formation in the Catholic faith is vital for every parish child who attends public school. CCD Registration for students in Grades 1 through 7 is taking place now. NEW STUDENTS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME. TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME RCIA: Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults New classes are forming in St. Theresa Parish for Fall RCIA is a process for adults who are interested in learning more about the Catholic faith leading to becoming a member of the Catholic Church. Baptized Catholics who have not yet received the sacraments of Holy Eucharist and/or Confirmation are welcome to complete their preparation for the sacraments of initiation through participation in the RCIA process. WELCOME BACK TO CCD Religion classes for parish boys and girls who attend local public schools will begin soon. All children must be pre-registered before they can attend class. WE PRAY FOR THOSE WHO ARE IN THE ARMED FORCES It is so important for us to remember and pray for the young men and women who are our friends and members of our families who are serving in the Armed Forces of our country. We must always remember the sacrifices made by these men and women who are defending our freedom. Our parish would like to have a visible reminder of all our parishioners and friends or relatives of our parishioners who are in the Armed Forces. These names will be placed on a prayer list next to the Shrine of Our Blessed Mother in our church. If you have someone to remember, please fill out the form below and give it to an usher at Mass or drop it off at the rectory as soon as possible. We would like to have this list prepared by October 1, the Feast of St. Theresa, to be blessed at the special 7:30PM Mass that evening. Instead we celebrate the day they died, because that is the day they were born into the joys of heaven. But the birthday of Mary, our Blessed Mother, is an exception. We do celebrate her birthday because she came into this world full of grace and because she was to be the Mother of Jesus. The birth of Our Lady was like dawn. When the sky starts to turn a rosy pink early in the morning, we know the sun will soon come up. In the same way, when Mary was born, she brought great happiness to the world. Her birth meant that soon Jesus, the Sun of justice, would appear. Mary was the wonderful human being whose privilege it was to bring the Lord Jesus to all people. Even today, if we have Mary, we have Jesus. Whoever is very devoted to her is very close to the heart of Jesus. We can make Mary s birthday special by whispering a Hail Mary often throughout the day. Students are selected by the pastor and the principal particularly because of some unforeseen circumstance that has happened to the family where the child would otherwise not be able to continue in our school. The sponsorship makes it possible for a child to continue to benefit from a good Catholic education at St. Theresa s School. Recipients are chosen by the principal and the pastor according to need.
